This really isn't a big surprise.  The problem with him coming out early, then being on a practice squad all year, is there is no time to get meaningful reps and get better.  Unless you get on a roster right away as a free agent it is a tough hill to climb.

Warren must continue to regret his decision to leave early.  I hate to be a downer, but I don't think he'll ever be a meaningful player on an NFL team because if he doesn't make a roster this year, he would be 3 years out of the NFL with little to show for it.

The same NFL trajectory may have taken place even if he had come back.  But if he gets drafted it makes such a big difference in terms of money and setting yourself up for the future.  A guy like Mouton got about $800K up front and should clear a million if he just makes the roster this year.

That kind of money, even if small by pro sports standards, can basically set you up on the right track financially for the rest of your life.  I can't imagine practice squad money comes anywhere close to that.

Have to feel bad for the guy, especially considering the guys the NFL pays to evaluate people told him he was a 3rd round pick.

UofM fan as well as Giants fan.  Everyone knows we can use some quality CB's right now.  Please sign him Jerry Reese.  Warren could see a friendly face across the line in practice everyday (Manningham).

Pittsburgh has a great need at CB, and it is pretty bad sign for DW's professional chances. The Lions could use him, but maybe the CFL is a place where he could refine his skills. I just do not think that he is fast/quick enough to be a cover corner at the NFL level. A few years of study at FS in the CFL might be a good idea.

Will probably be put on our PS; at least, I believe that is the intention.

While he played well, no doubt, and we do need better CB play, Gay is signed for low cost for this single year - he's not going to get cut, no matter how much I want him to.  Warrens real downfall was all the drafted - some highly - guys in front of him, none of whom are at a point where they could be cut (either draft picks from this year or last, or established vets like Taylor and McFadden).

If this was Madden, Gay would be cut...but the Steelers know that they can go to the Super Bowl with William Gay (it's been one for sure, perhaps two), so there's little doubt there for Gay.

Should Donovan make it back to our PS and stay with the Steelers, I'd expected him to make an impact either next year for sure or this year if Gay (or McFadden, honestly) regress and/or get injured.

They'll put him back on the practice squad.  And if they don't take him, someone else will.  Standard procedure, at least for the guys who had preseason showcase time before the final cuts.  Those that were cut earlier, like Obi Ezeh and James Rogers, probably not.  Martell Webb was also cut a few days ago. So his getting another look may only come if someone needs TE depth.  The practice squad isn't glamor, but it's the way in for a lot of undrafted free agents.
