Items:

  • Heininger didn't get the memo that Brink was the walk-on who was supposed to start at SDE. Seriously, Hoke said point blank he would start.
  • Will Campbell is back at one tech?
  • Martavious Odoms is way down the depth chart.
  • That horrible, horrible OR at K.
  • Freshmen who made it on: Beyer, Clark, Morgan, Brown, and Countess
  • Hopefully Barnum's presence means his injury isn't significant.
  • Somewhat surprising that Mike Jones managed to hold on to the starting WLB job without so much as an OR. Seems like we've heard about everyone save him.

Maybe his injuries are more significant that we've been led to believe.

Also think the fact that the depth chart doesn't list a slot receiver hurts him.  If he's healthy, got ot think he'll see some time as a slot when we line up that way.

I wonder how serious to take the listing of BWC at the one tech.  I wonder if that's just a way to keep both QWash and him happy about their progress.

While you are right, the difference is really irrelevant. Mallory said he wants to get to the point that the two best safeties are on the field, regardless of position, leading me to believe that their roles and responsibilities might not be all too different.

Besides, Prison Abs was a linebacker last year. He's only a touch more athletic than Kovacs.

Only one on offense and one on D. The special teams, sure, but IIRC, QB, RB, and several O-line positions were 'OR' in the early report for last year's opener. I've blocked out my memory of last year's defense entirely, so I couldn't tell you one way or another.

Also, does this mean the rumored Hopkins suspension is fictitious?

  • The OR at RB.  Maybe Fitz isn't a lost cause, and we can have multiple backs for when the other guy gets hurt (you know they will).
  • Repetitive, but Odoms on 3rd is shocking. As mentioned above, maybe injuries.
  • All our 2nd string O-Linemen will almost assuredly see lots of minutes over the long season.
  • All the Gordons on D is going to make announcing (or UFRs) fun.
  • Still OR at the other CB.
  • Lots of ORs in special teams. With Gallon prominent. Can the dropsies be in the past?

I hope that Gallon can fix his dropsies and become a productive returner.  I get the feeling that he is getting more coaching based on the drills I have seen them do in the practice videos.  He has the ability to be electric with the ball in his hands.

Biggest surprise for me is Odoms on 3rd string.  Odoms caught a sweet touchdown vs. Miss St.  He lays the wood on blocks.  He catches the ball.  I have to wonder as well about injury stuff and I guess Gallon must have had an amazing camp.

Hard to see bright side though of a 3 year starter placed on 3rd string there.

That if there were three WR spots (as will be the case most of the time in the actual games)  instead of two, it would be something like...

WR1: Hemingway -> Odoms -> J. Robinson

WR2: Roundtree -> Jackson

SR: Gallon -> Grady -> Dileo

I'm moderately excited to see where all this Gallon hype has come from. Certainly did not expect him to catch the eye pf this staff.

I see no mention of Jerald Robinson at WR. Which is odd given that everyone -- coaches, media -- has repeatedly suggested that he's been quite good.

will always get more offseason hype than guys like Grady.

You heard a lot about Ricardo Miller's progress, but not much about Moore or Watson.

We heard a lot about Ryan, Morgan, Clark, but not much about Jones.

Its just makes for more interesting stories to hear about young kids progressing then veteran backups retaining their role or ascending without drama.

Is it just me or does it seem like the guys with the most seniority won a lot of the disputed position battles?  Odoms is the one exception to this that jumps out.  Anyway, hopefully they are giving spots to the best guys regardless of what class they're in.

also i'm pretty sure hoke said if the season were to start today brink would be the starter. i could be wrong but i'm pretty sure thats what was said so it's possible heininger outworked him and earned the spot as camp continued on.

I think this staff has more gamesmanship than we might give them credit for.

I had heard here and there mentions of Heiniger but nothing about starting..

Personally, i really hope the point of that whole situation was to gloss over the fact that RVB is really about 305-310 lbs.. If hes there and not the 290 on the roster I am much much happier with him inside.

Also, heinger is 6'6 so playing inside would be a challenge for him

Also, am super excited to see what Thomas Gordon has in store for us.. he was easily the most solid tackler last year behind Kovacs.

and I wouldnt be expecting our nickelback to be anyone but Carvin Johnson on shortyardage and possibly Countess on passing downs.

Am a little worried about the  backend speed we have at S, but hopefully they are going to count on Avery and Woolfolk to be better than average on the corner.

Everything's that's come out so far has said Prison Abs or Woolfolk at nickelback. I wouldn't be surprised if that means they have Avery/Floyd (whichever one isn't already across from Woolfolk) take his place on nickel situations, and move him inside. Or  sub in Carvin to play deep and slide Prison Abs inside.

If this was a Forcier vs. Robinson situation, where the starter changes the game plan significantly I'd see your point, but...I no opponent would adjust their gameplan because Heininger beat out Brink or Jones beat out Herron/Morgan/Evans/etc.

By looking at the D of the previous regime, I doubt BWC has had any decent coaching. They all say Will has come a long way since the Hokeamania train arrived on campus. He's improving, just needs to work on his consistency with technique.

The thing that sticks out to me is the lack of Terrence Talbott. On the other hand, good for Blake Countess to make the 2 deep. He's going to be special.

It's also curious that Talbott is missing, my guess is that whoever loses out between AVery and Flotd goes to second string with tony anderson pushed down to 3rd
