OT: Suh to be fined again?
Mike Florio and the rest of Profootballtalk.com. continue their personal vendetta against Suh, with this recent post. My own personal disdain about these kind of attacks against Suh aside, this seems like a witch hunt. I can talk about Suh's abnormal strength until I'm blue in the face, but this all boils down to certain individuals jumping to conslusions. If you watch the Dalton play over, it was not a dirty play at all, it was just the ridiculous strength Suh has. He wants to punish Quarterbacks certainly, which doesn't make him any different than any defensive player in foootball. What makes him different, is like I stated, his uniquie power. Add to that his quickness off the line, and his technique, and he's the most feared player in football.
When he tackles someone like he's capable of, it's going to look vicious at times. But, save for the hit against Delholme last pre season, I'm hard pressed to find a play in which I'd fine Ndamukong.
That being said, I can only say one thing about the possibility of Ndamukong Suh getting fined again......

and didn't get flagged either time when he should have been thrown out of the game. It's really a shame when a player as good as Suh is thinks he's above the rules of the game. I suspect he's going to get suspended sometime this year (unless he tones down his act) or teams are going to get PO'd enough that they start going after his knees. It's pretty bad that Suh is just starting his second season and already has earned this type of reputation.
I was at in game seven rows back and was shocked the ref did nothing either time. The first time he was on the ground on top of someone when he threw a punch and it was clearly visible on the big screen, but maybe the ref's crew didn't see it.

It was a pretty dumb move by Suh. Although a fine might be a bit excessive, he shouldn't be surprised if it happens.

Football is an emotion and aggression filled game however, and I'd venture to guess this happens at least once a game. Doesn't make it ok, just doesn't make Suh unique for doing it.

He got fined for shoving Jay Cutler in the back while running with the football. I'd be surprised if Goodell didn't pursue legal action over this.

The NFL is getting ridiculous fining all of these defensive players. I was just watching the Raiders-Saints game and Shaun Rogers put a good lick on Kyle Boller, I mean, it was absolutely awesome. But as soon as Boller hit the ground, the PBP guys were already debating if Rogers will get fined. It wasn't even a penalty. It was just a football play where a huge talented DT broke through the line and had a fair shot at the QB. I guess I'm starting to side with some of these defensive guys that the NFL is getting softer by trying to regulate hits (that are legal).

I like how they completely gloss over the fact that Mankins was jerking around another Lion around by his mask, and Suh's hit was just to get him to back off.

That was just Suh stepping into two other players fighting, no penalty and not going to be any fines. That was just reporters trying to up the click through for NFL.com.
And it worked, I watched that entire Lions clip, then the next three clips. Didn't click on any ads though.

When Shaq came into the NBA, referees had to adjust. It took much less of an action from him to send a defender to the floor than it would from other centers. This didn't always make for consistently officiated games, but there was an effort to give him some benefit of the doubt.
I view Suh as much of the same way with his freakish strength and unmatched tenacity, only the word "adjust" is foreign to the NFL in any and all ways that doesn't make a quarterback's life easier.
Goodell is complete and utter bitch and I can't believe Dee Smith didn't target his autonomy on player discipline as part of the negotiating process.
EDIT: The comments on that article are pathetic. Talk about a bunch of a loser NFL elitists. What kind of a fan roots for a stuffy, whitebread commissioner to suspend one of the league's most exciting defensive players?

Yeah he has a target on his back after last year and then the Dalton hit. This one should not have been a fine, even if the Dalton hit warrented one. Hard to believe that they now fine guys when a penalty wasn't called on the field.

has got to control his emotions better. Hes one hell of a exciting player, but if he doesnt cut out some of the extra stuff after the whistle or ball being thrown, hes going to keep getting fined and penalized. What Mankins did deserved a fine too, but Suh taking a shot at Mankins face also deserves one.

Roger Goodell needs to be taken out Black Ops style...This guy is destroying the game...He thinks he's God..One man should not be able to just pick random fine amounts for anyone he feels is playing dirty...Give me a break...There should be some kind of comity who determines the fines and if the hits are dirty..Not just one idiot ..

so you guys will neg this but i don't get it. he threw a punch after the play. he missed, but he still threw a punch after the play. doesn't that always get a fine? did most of you just fail to watch the video and instead post complaints about what you assume was just a hard clean play? i really don't get the complaint.

OK, I watched the clip and am not a Lions fan so here is an unbiased opinion for you. There is no way he gets a fine for that. His teammate is being pulled by his face mask and Suh throws a push/punch. It's hard to tell but it appears he is off balance but his intent looks to have been to jack the guy in the shoulder pads and clean him off his guy.
If this is fined or brought up in anyway, this will be a long season for a lot of players. After the new labor agreement, you may see Godell staying out of the spot light for awhile.

It wasn't a punch. You don't punch a guy in the facemask/helmet with your unprotected hand. Mankins was pulling the Detroit player forward by the facemask and then twisted him and threw him to the turf (that's a dirty play). Suh lunged at him at this point with an open hand shove to the facemask, followed up by a two hand shove to the chest. The refs didn't miss it (evidenced by them talking to Suh after the play), they simply deemed the Mankins facemask/throw to be more severe, thus the reason only Mankins was flagged. Shoving after plays between linemen occurs countless times during a game... it can be flagged, but it shouldn't receive fines from the NFL.

when Nick Fairley gets in there, its going to get even nastier in terms of late hits, etc etc. My main worry is not how much these millionaire kids get fined, but how the late stuff (and needless personal fouls during plays) will cost field position and maybe a win or two. Penalties against the Lions are the bane of my existence; they always seem to come at the wrong moment for mega yards, etc etc. Suh and Fairley are both nasty & with officials looking to protect QBs, I can see them getting more than their share of calls against them. If they can tone it down just a bit, things like the penalty on Suh's hit on Cutler last season will seem more an injustice and less of a tightrope walk.
Highlights of Fairley... lots be excited about with him on this line, but some worries as well:

he has this reputation. He now looks as though he is going to continue to push the limits.
I think he will do something to get himself suspended by the end of the season. This is not an argument he is going to win. He can play his style of football without getting wrapped up in this and I think it is time for him to do so.

If I watch the Dalton play over again, I see a defensive lineman knock off a QB's helmet and pound him to the ground well after the ball was thrown. If I watch this play over again, I see a punch. Intent and fines all aside, those are things that happened.

Suh does need to tone it down a bit, but at the same time I think the NFL will make a show of it for a couple of weeks and then let the fines go unless the offense is egregious. We saw it last year after that mid-season fining bonanza, and we'll probably see it again this year. It does seem like the refs are more "aware" of his hits than others, but that is probably also due in part to Suh's aggressiveness and physical domination. He probably needs to pull back a bit, but I don't see this being a season-long issue.
EDIT: Also, just read sme of the comments on the site. Ugh - I thought Yahoo had cornered the market on idiotic sports fans. When someone suggests that the reason a big DT hits people so hard is because he is either schizophrenic or on drugs, you have to wonder how that person even figured out how to use a computer.

Yeah, those were all pretty comical. But if you notice, most of the comments that suggest that Suh is dirty got neg-bombed.
IMO, it wasn't a punch. It was open palmed and why would anybody punch somebody with a helmet on? Suh was just coming in defending his teammate. I have no problem with this. Only ones I have problem with were the Delhomme takedown and the Dalton hit (which was in the gray area for me).
