RCMB Bashing Brian / Public Service Announcement

Submitted by AZBlue on

Against my better judgement, I usually take a trip over to RCMB once a week to see what is happening in Spartyland.  (I picture myself as a Dian Fossey type - going to study the primates on their turf)

Today - between the typical "got some strange lately?"  and "Brady Hoke is fat!" fare is a thread discussing the recent online bio on our very own Brian.  While reading the comments I could totally visualize Ogre standing outside the Alpha Beta house screaming" NERD!!!!".   I will not stoop to share more and did not respond to the thread.  However, the anti-nerd theme now leads me to believe that many MSU convict-atheletes stident-atheletes are actual posters on the board.  Feel free to take a look if you dare.

PSA for new posters -- i.e the person who posted the "Purdont" thread today -- Please take the time to visit RCMB.  A few short minutes will make it obvious why name calling (O$U, U$C, Spartina, etc.), text-speak, and such will immediately raise the ire of the MGoCommunity.  To paraphrase our new coach,  "This is MgoBlog and we are above such things"........ PS - also Smileys suck

RCMB gets frequent mention here (I side with those here who wonder why), for which reason I became curious about it and posted a few times there.  In fact, I had never heard of it prior to then - I first knew about it because it was talked about here.

Here's my unsolicited take: there's an incredible amount of stupid-horrible-awful-disgusting-worthless bullshit there - more so than here by a very wide margin.  It is excrutiating - I stopped posting there because I couldn't take it anymore.  It makes MSU look terrible.  I wish they'd either clean it up or shut it down.

In fact, if you want to know "what is going on in spartyland," I cannot emphasize enough that The Only Colors is the place to go.  I consider it to be as good as here in terms of quality of content and discussion, though inferior as to quantity of content.

But the problem with RCMB is not necessarily that people are dumber over there than here or anywhere else.  It's that they don't have the procedures and tough Geaux_Blue-style mods in place to prevent stupid discussions from popping up, or to prevent otherwise worthwhile discussions from descending into "scUM" bashing and what you all rightfully call "brah-speak."

Brian and his mods do a good job of keeping the stupid to a minimum.  If they all left for a month, MGB would start looking more like RCMB.  Think Hobbes' state of nature.  With a hangman on the horizon, people are more civilized.  When there is no such hangman, people behave more like animals.

Get some stiffer procedures and some Geaux_Blue type mods in there, and the quality of discussion would go up IMHE (after some initial pushback).  [Not to take anything away from Misopogon or ZL, but G_B appears to me to be a harder type who is less tolerant of mere unoffensive stupidity, which M and ZL are more likely to leave alone].

Then again, RCMB prides itself on - ahem - diversity of OT discussions (how's that for a euphemistic turn of phrase?).  So perhaps iron-fisted Hobbesian style procedures and tough mods still wouldn't work.  But I'd still like to see it carried out.

I like to read and participate in interesting discussions, and I don't care where you come from, what school you went to/root for, etc....  The content, the procedures, the layout of the site, and the mods here are worlds better than RCMB (and just about everywhere else) for purposes of interesting discussions.  That this also happens to be a site for M-fans is irrelevant for me.

OMGS - thanks for the nod.  I find that you and I are generally on the same page.

An aside: "stident-atheletes"?  Really OP?

I looked at the length of your post before noticing that you were a Spartan fan and thought to myself "Oh Lord, so much for us not caring", then I read your post. You are more than welcome to stay here. Most of us appreciate seeing things from a rival's point of view as long as it doesn't come in troll form.

Sure - throw Shoe in there.

Perhaps I should add this addendum: Brian and his mods/writers have created a culture of ethics and enforcement that permeates through relatively larger and smaller groups depending on the behavior/issue.  An example of the culture in the context of a larger group is the general reaction to politics.  It doesn't take a BD or a Shoe to call it out - it just gets downvoted and generally disapproved.  Same with general dickishness and wanton disregard for all propriety (e.g., voting comments as "funny" in a tragedy thread).

An example of the culture among a smaller group (the quasi-mods) is the reaction to trolls/threads that are identified by people like BD and Shoe, and which are more subtle and less egregious, but still troll behavior.  Or perhaps less egregious troll behavior over a longer period of time.

But whether the culture resonates amongst a larger or smaller group, the culture is still there.  There is no such decipherable culture at RCMB so far as I can see.  It's a fuckin' free-for-all over there with some thoughtful mods (e.g., Trevor) and posters, and then a HUGE swath of idiots with nothing but obscenity and/or stupidity to contribute.  And there is no push-back against these people at RCMB, whereas there is such push-back here.

Did I feel a breeze?

Cedarfest may be one of the dumbest events I have ever witnessed.  In my 3 years at MSU, no fewer than 3 legitimate riots broke out in that dilapidated ghetto they had next to campus, with predictable consequences.  Of course, whenever someone in authority pointed out that students really should be able to act slightly more mature than drug-addled monkeys on a bender, the student newspaper would rage against the police force and their "draconian" practices.  I enjoyed my time at the school, but I am definitely not surprised to see them with a mediocre academic profile and a mouth-breathing alumni base (with exceptions, obviously).

I didn't read the thread because I hate RCMB, but it would be a common thought for most enemy fans reading this blog to think Brian is a nerd.

I love his writing style, even when I don't agree with it. The massive -- at times almost comical -- emphasis on statistical data analysis I can do without and would work better at a SABR meeting than on a blog that primarily deals with college football.

Actually, while you're here, could you do me a favor and reconcile these two favorite MSU claims: (1) "Walmart Wolverines" aren't entitled to be passionate Michigan fans and (2) Michigan fans are much more arrogant/elitist than MSU fans.
<br>What's more elitist than claiming that the only people entitled to follow a school's football team are those with the resources, abilities, flexibility, etc. to attend that school?

Who appointed them to offices?  I demand answers!

Also I find it distressing that they don't talk about important topics, like the untrue rumors that Craig James killed 5 hookers.

Why post a thread about these idiots? Why even care that they exist? I pay as much attention to their idiocy as I do to Delaware State football. Let's focus on something that's more important like MICHIGAN.

Well I just made my first visit there right now, and after scrolling through the posts I came across one where a man posted that he is married, that he and his wife will never 69 again, and the last time they did was 7 years ago. Lesson learned, never go there again.

The thing about posters at RCMB is that they run around telling everyone they got their grade 6, but nobody remembers them in grade 6...we remember them in grade 5, though.

and they have no clue...they're even laughing at Mike Hart and his new "grunt job" at EMU, referring to them as MSU's "little brother".  Of course, Mike doesn't "need" that job right now, but he's smart and planning for his future by learning the coaching business from the ground up.   Everyone knows what Mike wants to do when playing is completely over (which is probably not quite, yet) and to start out this way actually takes a few brains and dedication.  Maybe Sparty fans can learn something from Mike because some day he'll be smacking them down as a head coach somewhere, maybe even in AA.

The guy who wrote "Purdont" has had his account since 2008. He wasn't new -- the guy just made a mistake one time (then got assy about it).
