Gov. Rick Perry on rumors of A&M to SEC: "[Talks] are being had."
August 10th, 2011 at 6:39 PM ^
done deal. And FSU or Mizzou's going, too.
August 10th, 2011 at 6:39 PM ^
except a bourbon on the patio, I should add.
August 10th, 2011 at 6:44 PM ^
It better at least be good bourbon, what kind?
I think Missouri is still headed to the Big Ten, its a bit out of SEC territory. I tend to agree on FSU to the SEC, but Miami wouldn't surprise me either. Then again, both can be had if it goes to 16 teams (possibly adding in South Florida?).
August 10th, 2011 at 7:03 PM ^
delightful. Miami wouldn't be much of a surpise I guess. I still think Missouri, bordering Arkansas, Kentucky and Tennessee, isn't that much of a stretch. Especially if they're interested in broadening the ol' footprint.

Ferris State is joining the SEC?
August 10th, 2011 at 7:15 PM ^
who could blame them?
August 10th, 2011 at 8:16 PM ^
They'll be better in hockey than basketball if this goes through.

Interesting that the Governor of Texas is now involved. I'm not sure how much insight he can provide into a conference switch, other than as a fan and an alum.
With all the talk of a conference shift from A&M roughly a year ago, I really am surprised at the way the Big 12 played their cards. They essentially mortgaged the house to keep Texas, and gave Texas everything it wanted. Texas can, in theory, walk away from the rubble a year from now as an independent or PAC 12 (or 14) program, with Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, and Texas Tech(?) left holding the bag.
(Yes, I do realize Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Missouri are left, but I think they would already have destinations lined up.)
August 10th, 2011 at 6:50 PM ^
I think that is Governor-speak for "As soon as that $10 million makes it into my offshore account, it's a done deal."
August 10th, 2011 at 6:52 PM ^
Maybe this is Perry's latest effort to be relevant on a national scale.

"Perry Talks Economy, Merits Of Oversigning"
August 10th, 2011 at 8:08 PM ^
Come on man. There is a strict "no politics" rule around here. The guy is running for president, so any discussion about him is clearly politics.

Just saying that in a time when our country is so divided and acrimonious about political issues, I love that this is one place not to hear about it.
August 10th, 2011 at 8:20 PM ^
.....to bait anyone. I was making light of Perry's interest in Texas A&M's future conference allegiances....
ADDENDUM: I didn't see BlueDragon's comment as particularly political. Actually, I rather chuckled because it is pretty amusing that, when Perry could be doing things that shall not be discussed here, he seems very interested in this particular issue.
August 10th, 2011 at 9:31 PM ^
Didn't mean for my comment to get misinterpreted. For future reference, would Mr. Perry's very public prayer meetings fall under "religious life" or "politics"?
August 10th, 2011 at 6:55 PM ^
I'm pretty sure Perry is dissembling here. In Texas, the Board of Regents for the public schools are personally appointed by the governor. Perry has had a history of appointing his favorite slappies to the A&M Board of Regents. (The last chancellor, Mike McKinney was Perry's chief of staff.)
Perry may be distracted by his other (undiscussed on this site) political activities, but I highly doubt that he is out of the loop with what is going on at A&M.
August 10th, 2011 at 6:56 PM ^
In his full comment he just says he's repeating rumors and doesn't know much more than anyone else.
August 10th, 2011 at 7:20 PM ^
Bye bye Big 12?
And does the Big 10 respond?
August 10th, 2011 at 8:16 PM ^
The Big 12 is living on borrowed time clearly. It seems like conferences arealmost experiencing some business-like M&A activity to create the super-conferences that are now much theorized.
August 10th, 2011 at 8:57 PM ^
That Longhorn Network has only made things worse. I think that by the 2015 or sooner the Big 12 will be done
August 10th, 2011 at 11:11 PM ^
Well, if A&M goes, it will be done by this time next year. It's really up to TAMU. Once they go, they'll take either Mizzou or less likely Oklahoma, leaving 8 members. Kansas, KState, TTech, Iowa State, Baylor, OkState, Texas and Mizzou/OU. That's a very weak conference, particularly compared to the B1G, SEC and PAC12. Of that conference, it'll be the big1 and little 7 in all respects, particulary revenue and power (not to mention success on the fields and courts).
The interesting question is how this affects the B1G and ND. Texas will be independent, and the BIG isn't going to put up with the demands made first time around, so that's not likely at all. Is MIzzou or Kansas worth taking? Oklahoma? It's possible that Mizzou could end up with the B1G, but what's the second team to join with them, and which school satisfies the academic requirements (Nebraska was already a stretch academically)? Generally, OU is not thought of well in academic circles. Would the B1G pick off 'Cuse or Rutgers or Pitt (or all 3)?
This could be the catalyst for ND to join a conference, be it B1G or Big East. With the B1G adding another conference game soon, and the same likely to happen at other conferences, they'll slowly run out of quality competition.
Will the Big East try pick off Texas Tech to go along with TCU and/or Baylor? They already have TCU and there would be some synergies there, and presumably the possiblity of a bigeast network, or at least increased tv package revenue by bringing in some Texas schools.
Should get very interesting in the next 12 months for ND and the B1G, and just maybe 4 superconferences in the next couple years.
August 10th, 2011 at 11:23 PM ^
If Texas goes independent (they clearly think they can), it actually helps ND stay independent. Look for Texas to ink a long-term deal with ND. If they can "recruit" some other big-name schools to become/stay independent, look for them to come to an agreement to all play each other.
August 10th, 2011 at 7:54 PM ^
Rick Perry just organized something called Prayer-A-Palooza.
I'm sure he would feel right at home in SEC country.
August 10th, 2011 at 8:26 PM ^
August 10th, 2011 at 9:10 PM ^
If A&M goes, what about Oklahoma? Still dating Texas, or do they go, too?
August 10th, 2011 at 9:42 PM ^
If theSEC takes A&M, who else goes? I highly doubt that Florida would allow Miami or FSU into the SEC, same goes for a lot of the other ACC teams in their respective states...WVU? Missouri?
August 10th, 2011 at 9:42 PM ^
and the B10 takes Notre Dame. Boom.
August 10th, 2011 at 9:59 PM ^
Yuck; I'd rather keep OSU than hear those smug assholes with a Big Ten paycheck.
August 10th, 2011 at 10:22 PM ^
They'd probably frame the first paycheck and mount it above the "Play like a Champion" sign.
August 10th, 2011 at 11:20 PM ^
OSU may be a bunch of good-for-nothin' scoundrels, but tbey're our neighboring good-for-nothing scoundrels. We can't be separated from them.
