but this stat jumped out at me:

  • In the final three games of the Rodriguez era, Michigan allowed 137 points - that's 23 more than they allowed in the entire 1997 national championship season.

Your stat is about cherry-picking. We expect championship teams to not give up points - its part of the definition.

This was more the surprising stat to me: "In 20 seasons under Bo, the Maize and Blue allowed 30 points a total of five times (247 games). They allowed 30 points in 22 of 37 games under Rich Rod."

Jesus H. Christ!! Thats just downright pathetic. That goes far beyond the "we were playing alot of young guys" or the "the cupboard was bare" crap. There are teams out there who've dealt with similar issues and not sunk to that level of complete garbage defense. This just clearly indicates a lack of priority on 50% of the team. The defense was at practice for the sole purpose of getting our precious offense reps. We had an offensive coordinator disquised as a head coach and those kind of numbers just verify that. Nothing mattered except showcasing his brain child, rest of the game, rest of the team & 100+ years of history be damned.

Of course if he'd have had the proper "support" from allumni & the fanbase, it would have all been different I'm sure. I guess by "support" they must mean actually playing & coaching the games or something. Thats the only kind of "support" that I could see improving that steaming pile we called a defense.

I apologize to the apologist's, you're certianly entitled to your opinions but for me, I friggin spit when I say his name.

Taking in to consideration that offenses have changed over the years, this stat always disturbed me...

In terms of points allowed in a single season, before RichRod, no Michigan defense in school history had ever allowed more than 300 points.  The 2008 team gave up 347, the 2009 team gave up 330 and the 2010 team gave up a whopping 458 points.

That was kind of my point. 300 points is quite insignificant when you realize the year before they gave up 278 (and that was without a win in which they gave up 65). My question is how much of it was Michigan having a bad defensive minded coach and how much was us just not having the talent on defense? Yes, historically the defense was bad, but I would guess giving up 278 was up there in the ranking of bad Michigan defenses in the past 20 years.
