TomVH: WR Jehu Chesson Visit Reaction

Submitted by TomVH on

Missouri receiver Jehu Chesson took in Ann Arbor with his family for the BBQ this past weekend. It was his first time up with the new coaching staff and he came away very impressed. Here's a look at his film and what he had to say about the trip.

TOM: I know you sent me a text after the BBQ that said the visit was great, but what made it so great?

JEHU: I got there and we actually got there Saturday night. We went to the barbecue on Sunday and I just liked how I got to meet the coaches and talk to Coach Heck about football. We didn't talk too much but at the end we found some privacy and talked recruiting.

TOM: You went with your family this time, who all went with you?

JEHU: My mom and dad took me and my brother. My dad had been there before, but they seemed to like it. My mom really likes the campus and my brother likes the Big House.

TOM: What kind of stuff was Coach Hecklinski talking to you and your family about?

JEHU: We didn't talk too much football. It was a public event so we talked about recruiting a little bit. We mostly talked about that and he was straight up with me and said that if two wide receivers commit then the receiver position is done. I feel like they're letting me know in advance what's going on with recruiting, which I like. I'm going to stay on my own track because I want to make sure I see all the schools I'm interested in. Coach Heck[linski] was just saying though that there's two spots so if one guy commits he's going to let me know. That speaks volumes with them.

TOM: Just to be clear they're going to let you know if someone else commits but that doesn't necessarily mean you'll jump and make a decision right?

JEHU: Right. They're going to let me know, and I can figure out what to do from there but I'd like to take my visits and everything.

TOM: With Michigan it seems like you have a good amount of interest, is that the case?

JEHU: Yeah, they have something going there but you don't really know until you see them play. They're one of the schools that I'm going to watch closely. Coach Hoke seems very family oriented, and I liked how the coaches brought their families to the barbecue to introduce them.

TOM: After this visit do you feel a higher comfort level with the coaches and maybe even the program?

JEHU: Yeah the coaches signed contracts for a certain amount of years, but I feel stability shouldn't be a problem there. Looking at what Hoke did at San Diego State they will definitely turn things around.

TOM: Was there anything that really stuck out to you about this visit?

JEHU: We watched a highlight film; it was a neat film they put together. It was basically about them rising back up, it got some guys fired up. That was what really stuck out, and also that it was family oriented.

TOM: Now that you have this visit done with what's next?

JEHU: I'm going to meet with my counselors and talk to them about what schools I want to narrow it down to. I should have a top list before summer ends.

Tom, when he mentions wanting to talk to his counselors, do you know what exactly he means? Is it family friend counselors who are mentoring him through the process? Or is he talking about academic counselors who can highlight the academic prestige/specialties of each school? If it's the latter, I'm guessing academics are really important to him..?

i'd love to see that video they showed. Too bad they couldn't play it on the big screens! Would of been impressive. Hopefully they show it before the western or notre dame games.

Some food for thought. Godin, Strobel, and Wormley are all 250+ right now as juniors in high school. They still have 13 months before they suit up in maize and blue, it's quite possible one of them could outgrow the DE position and be moved inside.

If they really only want 1 DT + the way they've recruited linebackers, maybe Mattison was thinking of a switch to a 3-4? Ojemudia would be a great OLB in a 3-4... plus 4 other studs in the 2012 class.

So with all the possibilities at receiver, how does everyone rank them in order of preference? There are many possibilities and I myself seem to get them mixed up from time to time, but I am interested to see how everyone else ranks these WRs we have a chance at getting.

Very good point, but I don't know where else I could pose a question like that without potential recruits being able to see it. I mean they are judged by all of the recruiting analysts for all of the recruiting services, so I thought that fans' opinions would mean even less to them than strenghts and weaknesses by scouts. But then again, I don't know shit.

Sorry to steal your line, but it is just too damn good not to use.

With all the other schools' fans complaining about Hoke pressuring the kids, Chesson gives us a better view. I don't think they're pressuring them as much as letting them know that the early bird will get the worm.

Sounds like our on-field performance might have an effect on his recruiting. Caught my attention since he is one of the first recruits to sorta speak up about that.

I posted this elswhere so my bad but this is where it fits.

With five spots left I think that the following is what will happen . . .

Two DT's - Probably Pipkins and O'Brien

Two WR's - Probably Darboh and Madris

The last spot I think is a toss up between Dunn or Diamond and which wants to commit first. Diamond, who I think will stay in the BIG 10, seems as though he is less and less interested in joining the good guys as he is visiting Iowa today. You have to wonder how the coaches are handling this especially in light of how they handled the Wayne Morgan situation, and the way Sam Webb describes the Terry Richardson situation if he would decide to take visits(for those that dont know Webb says Mich would say no thanks to TR if he takes visits, ala RSJ saying he's good with no visits)

If Dunn says no and Diamond goes elswhere, then where do we go?? I would think we would really go after the RB Keith Marshall out of NC, and one of the two between Garnett and Banner. Try to swing for the fences and see what happens with the best talent available. What do you think happens with the final 5 spots???

As far as I can tell, they seem to be recruiting Devin Fuller as well. I think he could fit in to that final spot as well. Haven't heard anything new lately, but he was planning a visit soon and is seriously considering us. Can't think of any others off the top of my head though, besides the other WR's and DT's we may still be pursuing.

3 years in a row with only 3 qb's scares me. A scenario where one guy gets a multi-game injury and the starter gets banged up in a game, quickly brings you to one qb, backed up by a bunch of walkons. I hope Denard does well and Fuller sees that Borges can coach dual threat qbs.

How often do teams get down to quarterback #4? Be honest - in 2010 Michigan only needed 2 QBs, Devin Gardner only played because Tate imploded.

The chances are very, very high that Russell Bellomy redshirts this year. On the list of things to worry about with regard to a college football team (a list that should really be zero given that this is just a game), having "only" 3 scholarship QBs should be way down the list.

Over three years, I think it is a much bigger issue. If, for instance, Gardner had a career ending injury in spring practice next year, we'd have Robinson, Bellamy. While we'd probably start recruiting a second qb for 2013, I'd much rather have a redshirt three star already on the bench, then hope for a second 4 or 5 star who might be ready to play without redshirting.

While I understand it is a low probability event, it is one with pretty high consequences.

For that matter, plenty of 4 and 5 star qb's flameout. In my mind, using the scholarship on a decent 3 star is well worth the tradeoff.

Two DT's are not a given, but I agree with your sentiment (although I'll take Chesson over Madaris).

To fill the last remaining spot you'd have to think they'd take any top flight OL, Fuller, or Dunn - as well as any other top 150 player that wanted to come.

If TRich takes visits, you can bet your sweet, sweet ass that the coaches will be all over Yuri Wright - as I think they have stayed in contact with him throughout the process.

any more news about Terry Richardson? i wonder if he plans on taking the visits. you gotta think that the staff has a plan B if thats the case. i hope he stays but i want him to stay only if he is true blue.

1 OL: Diamond 70%, Banner 10%, Garnett 10%, Simmons 10%

1 WR: Darboh 33%, Madaris 33%, Chesson 33%, Stanford 1%

1 WR: Darboh 33%, Madaris 33%, Chesson 33%, Stanford 1%

1 DT: Pipkins 55%, O'Brien 45%

1 DT/RB/DE: O'Brien 50%, Dunn 49%, Washington 1%

All in all--I think it's Diamond, Pipkins, O'Brien and the 2 of 3 out of Darboh, Madaris and Chesson. If we go to 27, I think it's Dunn.

I'm not convinced the 2nd WR or 6th OL are a lock. I'd modify your list like this:

1 WR: Darboh 25%, Madaris 25%, Chesson 25%, Payton 25%

1 DT: Pipkins 55%, O'Brien 45%

3 - 6th OL/2nd DT/2nd WR/RB: Diamond 70%, O'Brien/Pipkins 50%, Dunn 40%, Fuller 10%, Darboh/Madaris/Chesson/Payton 25%, Banner 10%, Garnett 10%, Simmons 10%,

I think we'd take 2 WR if 2 or these want to come, but aren't dead set on taking 2. Probably no need to reach for 2nd when we should be interesting to some big ones next year in Morris's class. Seems much more important to get two DTs, or Dunn, or Fuller.

Another way to say it - biggest remaining needs:

1. DT#1

2. WR #1

3. DT #2

4. Dunn

5. Fuller

6. Diamond (or other top OL)

7. WR #2
