Back of the Scoreboard?

Submitted by UAUM on

They're clearly lifting and putting things on the back of the North scoreboard at Michigan Stadium, but you can't tell what from the Stadium Cam.  Can anyone on the ground in Ann Arbor give us an update or a picture?

Sorry if this is too OCD.  I need to start taking my meds more frequently.  But it would answer a lot of questions about what the backs of the scoreboards will look like.

is a casing surrounding the scoreboard. Id hope its a block m (without the script through it like before). I do know the last time i rode my bike down there one of the boards was finished with still a few feet around it for the enclosure.

It will have an electronic ticker tape with information about where to buy tickets, apparel,  and other things Michigan.

No one said anything about advertising OUTSIDE the stadium. :)

There is indeed a "back" to the structure.  Just now beginning installation.  The picture shows pretty well what it looks like.  I think it will cover up most of what you otherwise see right now.  What might be displayed on the blue background, I do not know.

What is "inside" the structure is both scaffolding (for lack of a better word) and "structure."  What I could see with the naked eye, is that while the panel-structures being lifted into place and installed via the crane are big (like, 10' x 15' big) there appear to be smaller panels that are part of those larger assemblies, and I think that technicians can walk around inside the scoreboard towers and replace individual components.  They look like walkways; they seem to function like walkways.  I don't think they are going to be featured on Stadium tours, however.

It occurred to me while I was looking at them; they could actually become billboards.  Not billboards to advertise your metro Detroit Ford Dealers, or 1-800-Call-Sam (that would be way too ironic), but rather the kind of outdoor hanging art you see at the Field Museum, or at golf tournaments.  They can digitally imprint anything on thin vinyl now, and so for instance there could be a new "billboard" each month during the football season, and a couple more for other times of the year.  So for instance, September 2011 would be a tribute to Desmond Howard.  October could be honoring Bump Elliott (if Brandon can get him back).  November could be the 60th anniversary of the 1951 Rose Bowl, or the 100th anniversary of "Varsity."  Whatever; you get the idea.

And there could still be a Block M painted on the backs of the scoreboard.

That's awesome, and very responsive.

I like that shade of blue.  Looks like they're going to put speakers on the sides, since they haven't started enclosing them yet.  As long as they're only piping band music, which I understand probably won't be the case, I'll be a happy man.

Looks like they have started to close in the sides, but I think you are still right about the speakers going on the sides that's the best place to put them.

A portrait of Denard's smile on the back of the south scoreboard would be an awesomely cool, if not practical, way of illuminating Stadium Blvd. for people departing the ND game.

What I gather from just looking at the stadium cam is that they are putting another small strip of scoreboard on the bottom.  Maybe they will run other CFB scores down there?

Here's another view, from a U-M photo. This may not help as far as the color of the lettering goes, but it provides a better idea of what the scoreboard will look like from the seats.
