Rodriguez available to caddie
Former West Virginia coach on bag for friend at Greenbrier Classic Monday
By Jim Workman
Assistant Managing EditorWHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS — He may be out of work until his television career as a football analyst with CBS Sports begins this fall.
But former West Virginia University and University of Michigan head football coach Rich Rodriguez knows how to spend his idle time.
He’s in town for The Greenbrier Classic.
Monday, he actually caddied for his friend Dave Alvarez in a Pro-Am golf event on The Old White TPC.
“Some of my good buddies knew that I needed work,” he said with a grin. “I work pretty cheap right now.
“I don’t know how I’ll do (as a caddie),” he said just before the round began. “I’m sweating already. I’ll probably get fired after about six holes.
“I had a chance to come down here for a couple of days. I’m getting ready to go to Oklahoma to do a TV shoot with (Sooners head football coach) Bob Stoops. I wanted to be around another day and see the facility and hang out with my friends.
“It's going to be fun.”

...Topic.
And it's flamebait.
If that's flamebait, then the mods should just ban all future references to "Rich Rodriguez" on this site. That article couldn't have been more innocuous.
Good point.
we live in a nation of pussies...am I right?
Sure, the article is pretty tame. But the comments so far aren't debating the finer points of RR's caddie techniques. There really isn't much to say other that "good for you RR" or "boo RR" which is going to lead directly into the same damn debated we've all been having since the Gator Bowl. There just isn't anywhere else this thread can go but there.
But yeah, the article itself is innocuous.
and had one nasty exchange in one thread, but I agree with you 100% on this. It doesn't matter what the topic is centred around (golf, music, commentating) if RR is involved the thread is going to turn into a flame war.
You definitely called this one (as evidenced by the rest of the thread).
Agreed. However, it's only fair to point out that while RichRods revolutionary technique of bag carrying may be the best in the business, he has absolutely no idea how to rake the traps or tend the pin. And while carrying the bag is certainly the flashiest and most exciting part of caddying, everybody knows that you have to be good at all three phases of the game to be a successful caddie.
Nazi
Believe it or not, he did coach here for a few years.
The lack of respect is simply incredible. Jeter getting his 3,000th hit was posted on here without an OT tag and not one person called for it. The dude went to UM for a semester and left before his season started.
Obviously my "Nazi" barb was intentionally over the top, but I am really getting sick of how uniform this board is. RR was defended probably more than he should of been at times when he was the coach here, but they fire him and now it's seen as uncouth to even discuss him. The slappies made him persona non grata at the drop of a hat.
No one will ever accuse the MGoBoard of being a place for independent thought.
...but fuck you, asshole.
Apparently your sarcasm detector is way out of kilter. That was a joke.
I don't give a rat's ass if RichRod is discussed here especially in a thread about his caddying for a pro-am golf tournament.
If you think I'm an MGoBlog slappie, you're clearly not paying attention.
Given your last sentence, why exactly are you here?
The only real purpose of the post is to lock in you calling him an asshole.
...I didn't intend to edit it.
RR was defended probably more than he should of been at times when he was the coach here, but they fire him and now it's seen as uncouth to even discuss him. The slappies made him persona non grata at the drop of a hat.I think you're getting it backwards. Many of the people most sensitive to RR discussions are those who strongly supported him. They don't want to re-live the RR debate and see him "fired again." I don't think it serves much purpose for people to keep on whining that he's been fired, but I have no problem discussing what he's up to now.
are OT
Rich, If you're caddying for a golfer who has broken 70 128 out of the previous 128 rounds, then that golfer goes out and quadruple bogies the first six holes, and gets in trouble for the first time in his life with the course marshall, you bet your a$$ youll get fired after six holes.
So that's a necessary response to the article
Cigol, you suck.
That was the funniest thing I've read on this blog in 3+ years.
Honestly, there was better stuff in the Hail to the V thread earlier today.

All time funniest? For me, hands down it was the infamous Stephen Kass NSFH late night thread that got a bit out of hand and was locked by one of the mods.
I have been tormenting my wife with my hand puppet since i read that earlier.....sort of a mr hand copy i think i will call it ms hand......
I wish RR the best I really do. I don't think it's off topic. Is bringing up Any other former coaches up off topic?
Blue Blood croud too happy, RR supporters too mad . . or something like that. Anybody want to come sit in the level headed, rational middle? Those of us who think Hoke is great and wish RR the best in his future endeavors welcome you with open arms.
Very few people who liked RR have had a hard time warming up to Hoke. Brian was getting killed from all corners for his attitude back in January of not giving Hoke a strong chance.
It's these despicable snobs who gave RR hell early on and still have their noses up in the air every time they hear his name. Pathetic, really.
hell early on were right though. He ended his tenure here as the worst coach in Michigan football history. He was the man at the helm for three years of Michigan football that were absolutely painful to watch. People are pissed off, and until we start winning again, it will stay that way.
Hoke will have to deal with the same shit if he starts to lose, and rightly so. This is Michigan, the winningest college football program of all time. If you come here to coach, you either win or you leave. The ones who end up leaving will probably not be treated so well along the way. Unfortunate, but true.
They weren't right about anything early on. They just derped a lot of "Michigan Man" derp and whined about him not paying his WVU buyout, something that was more a result of Bill Martin being horrible with public relations rather than RR being a sleazeball.
Those people, little by little, helped create the atmosphere that was responsible for his failure in a way that was second only to his awful defensive coordinator hires.
Let me get this straight:
You, BRCE, the guy who hates Carr, Beilein, Leyland, Dombrowski and basically every other local coach/GM who's ever had any kind of success - have a soft spot for a guy who didn't have any? Shouldn't you be concerned about creating a "negative atmosphere" for all these other guys?
I do NOT hate Beilein. Questioning some of his philosophies that can lead to poor rebound production is not hate.
I dislike Carr more for his attitudes, not his success, although I do hate how many are in denial of his failures from 2001 on.
Leyland and Dombrowski?!?! ALL HARDCORE TIGER FANS (this board seems mostly littered with casual ones) are ready (or close) to kick these guys to the curb. If you read Illitch's interview in the Detroit News the other day, it has "win the division or else" written all over it.
And not one of those guys had their characters violently assassinated before they ever coached a game. If you want to say I have a soft spot for someone I fully endorsed being fired after just his third season, go ahead. But the way his career went down made Michigan look AWFUL.
If we lose to ND this year at home? We've beaten them the last two two years and have almost our entire starting lineup back plus the game is at home? Hoke has exceeded my expectations recruiting wise now lets see what happens when the season starts.
For the record, anything less then 8 wins will be disappointing in my mind though I'm expecting 9. This was before the whole Ohio situation which could make things turn rosier if things go south for them quickly.
Not too hot, not too cold.
The responses on this board really are getting worse by the day. RR is a caddy at a golf event and takes a few shots at himself. Most would respond with, RR really has taken the high road after being fired, one can't help but wish the guy better luck at his next stop.
I enjoyed the article. LIked his display of self-deprecating humor. So sue me.
That something so innocent is seen as a potential flame war doesn't dissuade me from thinking Michigan has THE most effed up fanbase in the country.
For as little as I think of OSU's base on an intellectual level, they do destroy us one front: putting the desire to see their program do well over politics.
Verbally supposing that......
this has little to no point other than to start a flame war
does nothing but add foul to the fire....... Like kids on the playground trying to instigate a fight.
I'm aware you can expect to degenerate given how many get pissy at the mention of his name. But think about what that says. To me is it says we have a really, really messed up fanbase.
RR still a good guy. Glad to hear he is having some fun.
I saw him at the driving range a week ago with his son, he seemed to be relaxed and having fun working with his son on his game. I say good for him.
I was gonna go with a streching comment before the round of golf but I held back..
Honestly, much like most good luck to the guy and hope he gets a chance to redeem himself somewhere and show haters/morons he knows what he is doing.
His sig is from a generally well-respected, long-time member of the board... no need to call him an "idiot" for it.
