OT - Thunder Over Michigan - 2011

Submitted by mikoyan on

I haven't posted to my blog on here in a while.  Went to Willow Run this weekend to watch some planes.  It was pretty fun.  Some of those planes were maize and blue....

Sooooo when i click on the links its trying to bring me to all of them strung together, just so ya know. Copying an individual section out of that ridiculously long address works though haha

Edit- Good pics from what i have looked at though! My personal favorite has to be the P-51

Both the p-51 and the corsair are some gorgeous planes.  And I'll always have a soft spot for the 'sbd' dauntless (they called it the 'slow but deadly').

When I saw the thread title, I thought it was something with the OK City Thunder and Michigan basketball, and I was trying to figure out what it would be as the page loaded.

This is much better than what I came up with. Nice job

The last few years it seems like it has been cloudy every day of the airshow.   I'd love to get a decent shot of a p-51 with some actualy blue sky in it.

Was the German Focke-Wulf 190 replica there ?  I was thinking of going but then I was told it wasn't going to be there.

Also congrats on getting that shot of the Blue Angels crossing like that... timing had to be just right to get that shot!

I was hitting some golf... balls at the driving range and I was able to get a glimpse of some of the planes flying in the show, including the blue angels.  It was very cool and I didn't have to wait in any lines either!  Catch -22.

Great pics! Thanks for sharing these. I have an uncle who used to fly F-16s out of Selfridge, but they phased those out and he's flying an A-10 now.

The Cleveland Air Show is awesome. I went last summer and had a great time, even though the weather was really crappy. They had winds coming off the lake around 30-40 MPH so they were pretty limited in what they could do, but we still got to see an F-15 and an F-18 demo. The high-speed passes are incredible! I'm hoping to go again this year; hopefully the weather will be a little nicer.

I love the Cosair as well, it has a distinctive look. I have a model of one at my desk. They only issue is that it is a Navy variation, not a Marine Corps one. Still Cool.

Ever since moving to the west side of the country and transitioning to the aerospace industry vs the auto industry, i have been hooked on airshows as well.  The air show at Miramar (sp?) is awesome, and always draws some amazing crowds and demonstrations.  Gotta love the old Mustangs and Dauntlesses, they were the workhorses of WW2.

It's amazing to see those old planes, state of the art technology for their day, and then watch the F35 and F22's take to the skys and realize how far fighter/bomber technology has come in the last half a century.
