When will we have room for a class of 26?
I know it has been discussed here before, but my attempts at searching for old info yielded no fruit. So, I appeal to you distinguished mgoblogamaniacs to help me understand where the medical harships and Kellen Jones situation leave us. I remember many were expecting a class of 18-19 and the news of a mega class (25-26) was met with some surprise and wariness. With those four departures, how much attrition and/or non-renewed fifth years should we expect/require to make room for a class of 26?
We were at 18 or so before yesterday and added four spots with Pace, T. Jones, K. Jones and Talbot's careers ending. Thats 22 (so at least we know we have 2 more to give). This doesn't take into account any fifth year guys that aren't granted an extra year or any more injuries. We're probably pretty close.
How about right meow. We are around 23 available with a little more attrition expected.(Talbott) I really wouldn't be surprised to see us sign 26 and still be able to give Clark a scholarship before a dime ever leaves his pocket. We have yet to see what a year of a new coaching regime will do to some players expectations. A season of riding the bench is often met with a hand full of transfers, especially with a change in play calling. In short, expect us to sign 26.
I wouldn't expect Clark to have a scholarship. We have too many needs and enough highly skilled, interested guys, that we won't have a problem finding 6 more commits.
I agree but what I am saying is that we will sign those 6 and he will no doubt see that 7th scholarship open up before he steps on campus.
"no doubt"?
I doubt.
So you think that there is no way that 4 scholarships open up in the next year? The staff is certain that 3 will, so a fourth really isn't that big of a stretch. I hope you are right but odds are against it.
I counted the 27 spots between 5th year seniors and incoming freshmen the other day. I also had 6 5th year seniors as locks. So that's 21 spots. We just had 4 clear, which makes 25. 1 more before the next recruiting class is all but guaranteed.
BKFinest it.
They can only bring in 25 next fall on scholarship that's a firm NCAA limit. They have 5 (6 if Kellen Jones doesn't count) slots that they can use for this year's class on kids that early enroll this winter. So even if enough scholarships are available for 27+ kids will have to able to and commit to enroll early to fit them in.
B1G only allows you to count 3 toward the previous class, so we have a hard limit of 28.
I may be wrong, but don't they only allow you to count 3 towards the previous class if they enroll early? This shouldn't be too much of a problem as I have heard that RJS and Ringer both want to enroll early and I am sure there will be others that might try as well.
Exactly this.
Guess there's a lot of Old Yeller fans around here....flamebait for making a point on oversigning, jeez.
(If you missed it, this was an expression of concern that we could employ less than wholesome methods to get to 26. However, given the gold content of Hoke's poop, I'm sure we'll be okay.)
One thing to consider is that there is a possibility of Stonum sitting out this year and red-shirting (you know punishment and getting time to put his life in order). That would take a scholly for next year we planned on having.
If they did this I have a hard time believing they would pull his scholarship for a year while he sits out, thus counting toward the scholarship number.
EDIT: Meant as a reply to DB-NTDB above.
He saying he would continue on scholarship this year (while suspended) and take up a scholarship next year (while playing his final year). You don't pull it and give it back.
After re-reading that I'm a moron. My apologies.
There where a few 5th who contributed very little during their careers. I'm sure we'll have atleast 1-2 RB transfer especially if rawls or hayes start , not too mention a few slot WR's and tweener defensive player would might think their talents will fit in better somewhere else. Point being it will be easy to get to 26 scholoies for 2012 class without going all Nick Saban.
Exactly. I'm thinking we'll have room for 26 for sure. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised to see it get up to 27.
We're up to 22 openings currently.
There are 2 redshirt juniors unlikely to get 5th years. That brings us up to 24.
2 or 3 transfers before NSD brings us up to 26 or 27, and is very feasible to expect, if we've learned anything from history.
As another poster mentioned, RJS and Ringer want to enroll early, and can be backdated to last year, which would allow us to take 27.
If four more schollies don't open up between now and Feburary, Michigan will set an unofficial record for the least attrition at a major college. It would be great if everyone was happy and nobody ever got hurt. Sadly, though, the reality of a contact sport played by people who are mutants compared to an average person is that people get hurt.
Brady Hoke won't be "Sabaning" anyone.
Kellen, Teric, Pace, or Talbott -- I said to relax and trust in this program and the coaching staff, and that was before four spots popped up. If the coaching staff says they have room for 26, take 26, I will believe that they have the room for 26. Relax!
