OT- Tigers acquire Wilson Betemit

Submitted by WMUgoblue on

Tiger's acquire Wilson Betemit from the Royals for prospects Antonio Cruz and Julio Rodriquez. Looks as though Mr. Inge's time could be coming to an end. Solid deal, nothing too special, they still need a pitcher but on paper this looks like a solid rental.

Inge has made par maybe two years his entire career. A league average 3b is going to provide about 3 WAR. Inge has surpassed that mark twice, and has been below 2 five times. He used to be a good defender, but he's been subpar this year, and he's kind of a whiny self entitled jerk. Its good that he's gonna take the assignment to toledo though, him and Cale Iorg can have Strikeout Derby.

Inge has to go. Dude loves Michigan and Im thankful that he does but from a baseball perspective, Detroit had no choice but to find someone replace him. Just getting a .250 bat in his place will be a serious upgrade. Detroit is looking at pitching help and even help for the LF position.

Detroit is still in a good position to make the playoffs albeit only through the division, wildcard might be out of reach.

Rumors have Detroit looking at Beltran as a possibility for OF help. Not sure if they still are. Also the obvious, they are looking for pitching but I think all the teams chasing the playoffs are. We'll see if any moves come up the next week and a half.

I think this is a great move for us. Immediately improves overall production at 3rd (looks like we lose a little bit defensively, but that should be countered by a greater improvement in offense), unless Betemit just drops off a cliff. I like that we didn't give up much at all to get him.

Now, assuming Betemit stays within his career averages for production ROS, what do the rest of you think about signing him to a longer deal after the season?

Rather than attempt to refute everything BRCE has commented on in this thread I will just lay out a blanket comment stating that he (she?) is not good at knowing what he (she?) is commenting about on this particular subject.

Thank you and happy Thursday to all.
