OT: Heat wave

Submitted by Purkinje on

Who else out there is soaking up as much MGoBlog as they can before the power lines inevitably start being fried by the air conditioners tonight? Before the little bit of rain we just had here in AA swept through, the heat index was 106 degrees. Now it's at 99. I can't wait until Thursday when the straight up temperature is predicted to be 99. If it's as humid as today, the heat index will be 115.

I dunno about that. Michigan gets no hurricanes, minimal tornadoes (compared to the plains states), no earthquakes... and it only gets unbearably hot a couple of times a year and unbearably cold a few times a year.

Now, Minnesota? Fuuuuuuuck that.

I'd say the upper Midwest has the best weather in the country.  We don't have hurricanes, tropical storms, earthquakes, floods, and we have very few tornadoes.  All we have to deal with is a snow in the winter and a few heat waves in the summer.  I'd rather have our weather than lose my home to a hurricane or a flood.

Tsunamis, avalanches, mudslides, volcanos. Watch your favorite Discovery channel weather crisis special, and it's probably happening somewhere else.

<br>Yeah, it may be like 10 days (5 in the Spring, 5 in the Fall) that are actually nice, as opposed to say, San Diego. But I'm not worried Michigan is going to be part of the ocean or wiped off the planet because of one bad day.

I thought Michigan summers were uncomfortable until I spent some time in the South in July a couple years ago.   That was horrific.  This kind of disgustingly hot and sticky weather we experience a few days a year is what they get for 3-4 months straight.  And yeah, not having to worry too much about natural disasters is a plus.

I honestly like the heat and humidity.  It does not bother me at all.  I think people who rely too much on the A/C when it's 75-80 degrees are the ones who become immune to changes in temperature.  I only use the A/C when it gets above 90 and never use it in my car unless I'm on the highway.

I figure someone will be bitching about how cold it is in winter and how badly they want to move out in about March -- nobody ever is happy so my philosophy is to just enjoy the changes we get here. We literally get every single dose of weather on the planet along with a large unsalted body of water. Not many places have that.

although my degree is technically Earth Systems Science and Engineering with a concentration in meteorology.  If you want to go that route the degree is offered by the AOSS department in the College of Engineering.  I'm working on my masters at Texas Tech right now.

As for switching... might I ask your motivation for switching careers?  I say that because it is an incredibly crowded field right now (like a lot of fields), and the outlook doesn't look particularly promising as far as growth is concerned at the moment.  If it's something you're passionate about I say go for it, but be prepared for a shitty job market on the other side.  Just a bit of advice from someone who's having a hell of a time finding a job at the moment.

Glorious landlord here in columbus has taken his sweet ol' time fixing our air conditioning (a simple in-wall unit).  We are in a second (top) level apartment and bake under the roof all day.  Went to bed at midnight last night with our thermostat reporting a brisk 86 degrees inside the apartment, and it was extremely humid as well.  Confirmation columbus is hell.

Luckily our new lease in Dublin starts next week (a full month before this lease expires, but I don't care), so I can soon get away from campus and into some central air!

by the shore of Lake Michigan.  Delightful, actually.  9 minutes from cracking a cold Canadian, putting the pure manic hell of work today behind me, and wiggling my toes in the sand.

Buhbye.

Currently in the Middle-East, thought I would be able to come back to some cooler weather this fall; it sounds like it's the same in Ann Arbor as here; hooray for not having A/C in my apartment this year.....

The sub-basement of Randall Labs is a fine 72 degrees, so I'm sticking around the lab waaaaaaaaay late so I don't have to deal with my un-airconditioned house. The prof I work for just thinks I'm a hard worker, so, I guess it's OK?

my a/c has not shut off since mid April and I believe we are around 15" behind in rainfall. My 4 day  trip to NYC this past weekend was a welcome relief. NYer's were thinking I was crazy walking around in jeans all day. Shit, it was 93 when I landed last night at 11:15 pm back home.

I have relatives in Houston. How the hell did Houston ever get settled? It's hot AND humid, it's right in the path of hurricanes, and while a great town, it's not like it has the lush scenic greenery of say, Florida.

My office is in Belleville, MI, where it was a balmy 94, but the rain cooled it off to about 83, and now that the downpour stopped, it's inching back into the upper 80s.

the temp right now is 81.8 F but the humidity is sitting at 72%.  It is on days like this that I remind myself of the weather in Iowa City:  96 F and 52% humidity.  That's f*cking terrible.  Time for a swim.

the one day that isn't supposed to have severe thunderstorms will be 99.  I guess that's still an upgrade from the tornado warning last year.

I'm an RA at a camp right now. Living up on the 3rd floor of West Quad with nothing but one open window and a fan that is way too small. I woke up just covered in sweat today. This sucks.

I feel sorry for you.  My freshman year, I was on the 7th floor of bursley and I never once closed my window or turned off my fan all winter.  It allowed the room to be somewhat comfortable.

It's always hotter than hell during Art Week. And there is always a violent t-storm as well, which at least cools things off a little bit.

Used to it.  This is a normal day back in Texas and i didn't even have a/c in my truck when i lived there.

Haven't had the experiance in a while, though.  You will all survive.  But don't kill my damn power!!!!

Dallas Texas, It was 109 here on Friday and at 100 or above everyday this month so far. We have not had any rain since June 17th. They say this will be the second hottest summers here since they have been keeping records back in the 1800s! Living here we all know what fucking hot is. We won't cool off till mid Sept. into the 90s that is.
