OT: Dustin Johnson implodes, again.
I am a big fan of golf, and, while I am happy to see Darren Clark about to win the Open Championship, it is painful to watch Dustin Johnson implode in another major (he just hit one OB on the par 5). I just hope that Johnson can win a major one of these days.
He's +1 on the day, even after the double...I wouldn't call that imploding. Though I do agree I'd like to see him win one, apparently according to Darren Clarke's wiki he's already won (see right side, major championships...)
According to ESPN, it's Clarke's first.
Edit: According to the wiki article, Clarke's major is this year's Open.
I thought Clarke would be the one who choked. I also thought that Johnson would have figured out how to do this by now. After yesterday's play, I thought the winner would be Johnson, Bjorn, or Jimenez. That is why I don't gamble on sports.
Mickelson? Strange back 9.
talk about imploding...4 double bogeys if I'm not mistaken
no doubles, 4 bogeys
Phil is the one imploding. DJ would be doing great today if he had that one shot back
Start way off the lead. Make a great run to get close enough to think he's got a chance and then blow it. 32 Top 10's in his career--4 wins.
how can you implode starting 5 back? I think the only way you can implode is if you have a 3 shot lead.....
I like how clarke and Johnson are chatting all along 17 and 18. Certainly don't se that very often
Calling this an implosion is ridiculous for someone who claims to watch a lot of golf. He played pretty well on a difficult course, under adverse conditions. Relax a little. Great win for Clarke. Class act. I'd love to share a pint or 12 with that guy.
Implosion to me is McElroy atthe Masters. It reminded me a lot of Greg Normans many implosions at the Masters. Rory folowed it up with a Major win at he next opportunity though, so that was pretty cool.
edit....looks like someone beat me to the Rory comparison by.....a day! Damn, I should have read the whole thread before posting...
Winning your 1st major at 42 has to feel very gratifying. Hard to root against the guy.
You may be a big fan of golf, but you're not an eductated fan of golf.
Lol 72 is hardly imploding. Imploding is more like McIlroy at the Masters.
and im pretty sure you have to have the lead to implode.......i think that is kind of a prerequisite....
I think he's the next Phil Mickelson. He makes a lot of great shots and is great around the green, but he can't seem to keep from having that one blow-up hole every round. He's young though and has time to get it all together.
He has a double bogie on a single bad shot, and plays +2 during some terrible wind and weather... Remember Darren Clarke himself shot even Par today.
I really like DJ and think his time is coming, but to label this as an implosion is unfair, Phil imploded on the back playing the last 9 at +3
Edit: Johnson finished +2 after bogey on the last.
phil was 4 over on his last 8, missed the 2 footer on 11.......was over from there. Never seen a better player miss more short putts than phil. That much talent should have 7 or 8 majors, I still think dustin will win a few.....I think his swing gets in his way sometimes, hard to play really consistent with the clubface that shut.
I really agree with you, DJ swing is so powerful I think he struggles to control the ball. It's so hard to "control" his hook (much the same as Bubba Watson). These guys get an extra 15-20 yards off the carry but it is so hard to have top level "touch" on shots.
I think this is exactly what happened on 14 when he went OB, tried to keep it low, got out in front of his swing and with a closed club face just blocked it dead right. I hate to compare other golfers but what separated Tiger, Jack, and other greats from guys who are very good is the ball striking and spin control with all their clubs.
Plus when you're hitting it 30 yards by everyone, thats 30 yards more for error.....and in the wrong direction when it gets going crooked.
IIRC some guy shot an 8 while leading the U S Open at Oakland Hills.
and for years, any time a player double hit a chip shot around the green someone would undoubtedly quip "you TC Chen'd it".
Chen double hit a chip shot I think early in his final round while leading the 85 US Open, took an 8 on the hole which opened the door for Andy North. Chen nearly chipped in on 18 to tie, so he admirably stayed in the hunt, most would have wilted after doing what he did.
Chen also had a double eagle earlier in the tournament. The golf Gods gaveth, and the golf Gods tooketh away
Three bogeys and three birdies plus one double does not make for an implosion. If this was the Bob Hope in Palm Springs maybe but not at the Open.
I just hope that the recruiting rankings are up soon.
Didn't implode in the least bit. Take away that double bogey and say Clarke doesn't make every single one of his meaningful putts on the first 16 holes and we might be talking about DJ, Open Champion. His 82 at the US Open last year was an implosion. He played decent, not great, but okay considering the conditions and the course. Just got outplayed by Clarke.
Hitting one OB for a double bogey does not constitute an implosion. He actually played well otherwise and hung in there until the end. If he hadn't played as well as he had for four days you would never have noticed the one bad shot. Based on that analysis many others were "imploding" all day and week.
