Michigania one year. We played the greased watermellon game at the beach. The '69 team won.!!!
Kind of surprised they had color tv back then. Is that bad?
There was color tv back them, just most people still had black and white. Technology caught on a lot slower back then as people were less willing to mortgage everything just to keep up with the Jonses. Credit cards hadn't even been invented yet.
I was 4 months old when this game was played. Had never watched the game before now.
They were relatively new and not as common as they were today, but they were definitely around in 1969.
I can't help but think about it when about a third of the offensive plays don't have a wide receiver. They still pass more than I expected, so it's not complete stone-age football.
I think I just saw someone smoking in the stands
I'm pretty sure people were still smoking in the stands when I was a student in the late 80s/early 90s.
I don't think smoking was officially banned in the stadium bowl until about 1992 or 3.
I'm watching . . . wife and kids are in bed, nothing else worth watdching on TV. It's my duty to watch the game that put Bo and Michigan FB back on the map.
This is the game that made me a Michigan fan. I had just graduated from high school and was trying to avoid the draft. My dad was a big OSU fan. I started rooting for the Wolverines because they were such big underdogs and to piss him off.
The rest, as they say, is history.
So did you avoid the draft, Blu?
Earle Bruce's first Michigan game. The Gambler (Art Schlichter) played a big role. Bo gets off on the wrong foot vs. Earle.
Hard to watch.
For as much as I love reading about Bo and Woody as personalities, their games in the 10-year war are pretty hard on the eyes for someone who has seen nothing but pro and spread formations. I'm sure that Michigan (and OSU) had a lot of long and exciting plays when pounding other members of the Little 8, but when they met each other, it was a stalemate.
Removing yourself from the drama and suspense everyone must have been feeling at the time leaves the games to their aesthetic qualities, which are quite minimal seen through today's prism.
Among other things, I was in charge of the out of town scores. I had a big black drum and put all the teams in white letters on the drum. Then using an ap ticker, I put up the numbers next to the teams. Then on breaks I would slowly turn the drum and a camera would superimpose the scores on the screen. FWIW, the ABC crew was almost as excited as the Michigan fans.
I watched the game last night with an OSU fan. We both commented on the scores that were clearly rolled across the screen by hand.
The game was much different in 1969 but they were still great athletes. Barry Peirson had an amazing game. I'm certain he could play today.
In 1968 OSU destroyed Michigan and won the NC. The 1969 game was supposed to be no different. I had a bad experience with an alcoholic football coach in high school so I didn't attend and games at Michigan until someone gave me tickets for this game. He didn’t want to watch the slaughter. The excitement among the fans grew and grew as Michigan kept surprising OSU.
We had bad seats near the field in the end zone in the student section. My roommates and I were sophomores. At the end of the game our bad seats turned out good as we among the first rushing onto the field and we helped tear down the goal posts. The OSU players were stunned and had a glassy look in their eyes. It was awesome.
Went to every game after that. Even had season's tickets for two years when I lived in California. Too many kid obligations here now on Saturdays to make it over for games but this game is always sweet. Your first one always is.
