They always send the crime alerts way after the incident so that nobody can have a heads up of whats going on and therefore cannot protect themselves. Whoever writes those things for DPS does a great job of making nearly every crime alert comedic in some way or another, too.
You mean so innocent people can't take shelter, or so the criminals can't escape?
I'm pretty sure people being safe is more important. The criminal is going to be trying to get away regardless.

Thompson/Williams is one block from Thompson/Maynard where Stonum was arrested in May.
My comment was that I hoped he was in bed, sound asleep, implying my hope that he was not in the area of the shooting last night. Last thing he needed was to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.
That's all. I wasn't implying that he had anything to do with the shooting.

A DPS crime alert email/text message. And there definitely would have been one if there was a shooting on/near campus. So I would say it's highly unlikely there was a shooting.
EDIT:I didn't know the alerts went out so much later then the incident happening. Seems like something that should be a little bit more immediate...
It was in fact a shooting, it happened between my house and the nighboors, idk why there isn't a crime alert yet. The guy was shot in the leg and was taken to the hospital
Not too long ago, some guy went into the chem building with a handgun, accosted a janitor, and got away. The first DPS alert wasn't until 6 hours later.
Now the MGoBoard breaks a story before DPS.
Sometimes it takes forever, and other times its out minutes after it happens. I was very impressed with the police response time though, they were here no more than 4 or 5 minutes after the shots were fired.
Given the number of police departments with patrols in the area (U of M, Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County, State of Michigan, etc.) and the general lack of "action" in Ann Arbor, 4 to 5 minutes seems like a pretty long time to me.
Not trying to bash cops, but people have to understand that the police are not omnipresent. They can't be everywhere at once. Ann Arbor is a city and shouldn't be regarded as "safe" - although people think of it as a quaint college town.
Keep fit, stay alert, don't walk alone if you don't have to.

6 sexual assaults last month. Maybe not as bad as a lot of big cities, but not what I would call safe either.
I would pick Ann Arbor over a city Such as Detroit or Flint though.

If you are a man you are probably relatively safe in Ann Arbor walking around at any hour unless you're an idiot. Women walking around might be slightly more sketchy but not in the same ballpark as the cities you mentioned or really any sizable city.
It's really hard to compare cities' crime rates, because the rates are only as reliable as the police department in charge of the crime reports. I recall about 15 years ago this was a big issue in AA, because sexual assaults that might not get reported in other towns were reported in AA, inflating AA's perceived crime rate. Some businesses and homeowners complained that this hurt the city's image. I don't agree with that, but I understand the point.
I applaud (and fully support) the cities that dutifully report crimes, but it comes at a PR cost.

Ann Arbor is light years safer than some of the other places I've lived. As for sexual assaults, in something like 80% of cases the victim knows the offender. There's not a whole lot the cops can do to prevent those situations from happening.
I would have to agree with that assessment. First someone had to call and then 911 had to go through their spiel and then they had to dispatch someone...Pretty quick.
As for feeling safe in Ann Arbor...I feel alot more safe when I'm walking around Ann Arbor than I do many other towns.

A gun shot was fired outside my apartment at 10pm. The police came but did not find anything that looked suspicious. Around 11:50 I heard two more shots, this time followed by an ambulance shortly after. The police where here until around 2-3am. I was told to stay inside until further notice. I still have not received an Incident Report. From the time I heard the first gun shot, until the next two shots fired, and until the police finally left; there were still people walking around outside right where it was all going on. I still have not received an Incident Report, and all those people walking around apparently didn't either or they wouldn't have been walking around over here during the whole thing.
I heard that happen at 10, but I thought it was a firework and moved on. Then I walked back by around 1130 and police were everywhere. Crazy stuff.
You would think they would send out the usual barrage of emergency phone calls and texts so students wouldn't walk over there. Way to go DPS. At least this is better than my freshman year at purdue when some guy was executed samurai style and decapitated one block away from my dorm.

It seems like the speed with which a crime report is sent out is inversely proportional to the severity of the crime. Some guy exposes himself to people outside the CCRB and runs away? You're getting that alert within 30 second.
They'll break news of a serious danger in a few months, I'm sure. Then again (IIRC), DPS never sent out an alert about the gunshots at Bell's pizza last summer, either.
