Latest Photo of New Yost Scoreboard

Looks like the new Yost scoreboard is nearly ready to be hung. Latest photo posted by umichhockey shows that the bottom band (aka "place your ad here"—see original rendition below) has now been attached, and the board is hanging just above the surface.

but I believe that scoreboard was meant for a much larger arena.  Not that I'm complaining, but doesn't it seem like sitting in the stands might be the equivalent of sitting about 5 feet from a 50 inch TV screen?

The four main boards are 13' x 16.8', which if I calculated correctly is equivalent to a 250-inch screen. According to viewing distance calculators (such as this one), the ideal distance from such a screen would be about 30 to 60 feet. The rink is 85 feet wide, so it doesn't seem like any fans would be too close to the scoreboard.

Red Berenson relayed a funny thought to Annarbor.com:

Looking out his office door at Yost Ice Arena, longtime Michigan hockey coach Red Berenson marveled at the sight of the new scoreboard sitting on what normally is center ice.

With suspension cables and workers in hard hats scattered about the iceless surface, Berenson wondered if the enormous new scoreboard would cause Yost to collapse once raised to the ceiling.

Berenson was joking.

The article discusses the long-term plans for Yost, with Berenson speculating that it will one day need to be replaced, though that time seems a long way off, according to Dave Brandon. The recently approved renovation will likely be "the last major undertaking for awhile."

Berenson likened Yost and its old barn feel to a classic car.

“Like keeping an old car, you gotta put new tires on it, you gotta paint it… like an old car, we’re going to spruce (Yost) up,” Berenson said.
