Ron Thompson to Visit?
According to Scout (Tom Beaver, so take it FWIW), Ron Thompson told Trieu at SMSB that he just talked to Michigan two days ago and is planning to visit soon.
I'm glad to see this, as I think he's a phenomenal athlete. The real question is, what does this say for positions? Is Thompson good enough to play WR? Or do the coaches think Williams is moving to OL? Three TEs seems like a lot when we have undeniable need at WR.
WR/TE...For some reason I see him adding lbs before and during his first few years of school. It will be interesting to see where he ends up.
think we can pass him up. His film looks fairly good. I dont know about a B1G WR though.
i wonder if even though they're keeping the option open, that the ship has sailed.
Dude, I thought all the five stars just committed. Shouldn't we worry about who we're not going to accept LOIs from?
We can only hope he makes it work.
You spelled "Hoke" wrong..
OL is a little of a reach... WR/TE sounds more plausible. I would like to see a pure WR added to this class instead but hey, if the coaches think he can contribute, why not?
AJ Williams is the one people think might end up at OL. He's already projected as a "blocking" TE, so adding some lbs could make him a lineman.
If the staff wants one of the TEs to be a WR, it'll be Funchess, not Thompson
Yeah, this is what I was going to say as well. Funchess could be a good big WR.
Watching Funchess' film is there a reason not to move him to wideout? Looks to have great ball skills and size. Is he just not fast enough?
Yeah, he's not very fast. He could be a decent receiver but a dynamic tight end, IMO.
I think he will go to Toledo, its just that rocket oil
if we signed him, a lot more pressing needs.
Funchess is a WR/TE and Williams an OT/TE. It could work.
^ This.... well said
did anybody else hear the guy call into 97.1 last week and claim to be the coach of Southfield High? He basically said that one of his players was being recruited and once the Michigan offer came through "it was over".
maybe?
Did the coach say "One of my players received an offer," or "one of my PLAYERS(!!!) received an offer"?
He seems like a good kid and is probably the best of the 3 TE's we are recruting including the 2 commits. He was close to committing before both Williams and Funchess committed back to back. Williams is already 260 lbs and if he adds any weight over his senior year, he may be too big for TE. I believe I read somewhere he is going to be playing OT this season as well. He may project better to tackle at the next level which means we could go after Thompson still. Also, God forbid we dont get Stanford/Washington, we could move Funchess to WR and still fit Thompson in the class.
I loved how Hoke and crew began this class and have gotten to this point-but I am not hugely impressed how they are handling the class size at this point-I just hope they are making sure they are filling all the holes that the seem most important.
Since you're not impressed with how they're handling the class size - which commits do you think we shouldn't have accepted? Or what do you think should have been done differently? Just curious what it is you don't like.
MOAR PAIRS
Take Thomspon as a WR and watch him soar. Look at Calvin Johnson out of high school .. 6'4.5 215 -- Ron Thompson is 6'4 215. Thompson coule be a beast at WR, and will cause all kinds of matchup problems.
"...and watch him soar"
YES.
Your comment reminds me of THE KNOWLEDGE.
YES.
Who is the only other poster.
YES.
To utilize the concept of anything "soaring".
YES.
Well played.
YES.
Last time I checked Ron Thompson doesn't run a 4.4-4.5 40 but I like your optimism
Neither does Calvin Johnson...he ran a 4.35 at the combine.
Could outrun cheetahs out of high school. I don't think Thompson has that size/speed combo.
I' would prefer that we take Calvin Johnson. I mean, his film is amazing, and he seems to be pretty athletic. But you say that Ron Thmopson is the same type of player as him, and wants to go to Michigan, so let's just take him.
because every 6'4 215 guy plays the same? Nevermind the many differences they have right?
We can't pass him up.
Would still like to have him, I think he is a great prospect and lets face it, were not overyly stocked at TE right now!
