How do you rank the dirtiest B1G programs?

Submitted by ChicagoB1GRed on

yes I know OSU is #1. but as a as a newcomer, how do the others rate?

Only dirty CFB program  I can think of  is Illinois, which I always found pretty funny since they got caught a lot and didn't even do that well.

1. OSU

2. Illinois

3-12 ???

quite a lot of time on probation in the past. Every program has problems, I guess I rate the dirtiest ones as ones that don't punish accordingly when problems come up. *cough-drunken underage cop fight-cough*

You have it about right. I personally that Penn State is dirty but knows how to hide their shit REALLY REALLY good. Pretty much every major program has been with probation except us (I don't count practicegate), Notre Dame, & PSU. I smell a rat in Happy Valley.

Covered up a major crime and hid the weapon ... the Corn over-signs and Texas called them on it. Is that "dirty?"

of course.

But what other program is on NCAA probation? Or has been, recently? (last 15 years) Or had NCAA sanctions? Or coaches did?

Minnesota basketball.

Indiana basketball.

Ohio State football (very soon) and basketball.

Michigan football (yeah, I know, for the most minor of major infractions) and basketball.

Illinois basketball

MSU basketball

I'd rank them (with severity of infractions being the most important criterion, how recent they were the next most important. Number of violations and number of programs on probation/hit with infractions next. Didn't count Fulmer Cup-type disciplinary violations; that helps many schools.) Nebraska gets a pass until they start league play.

1. OSU

2. Indiana

3. Illinois

4. Michigan

5. Minnesota

6. MSU

7. Iowa

8. Purdue

9. Wisconsin

10. Penn State

11. Northwestern

Sure, it's pointless.  But it sure is fun to hold THE Ohio State University responsible for systemic and systematic cheating.  It's also a lot of fun to expose MSU as a dirty program, given the teflon image Saint Dantonio has in all Michigan MSM except those from Ann Arbor.

So, my rankings:

1.  THE Ohio State University

2.  Michigan State University

3-12.  Nobody else comes remotely close to what Tressel or his protege have done and/or continue to do on the cheating scale.

I think OSU, MSU and Illinois are all low on your list. But I am really curious about Iowa and Nebraska, particularly Nebraska. We had our debate over 1997, but that was about play on the field. Other than Osborne's bizarre support for Lawrence Phillips, I have always had a very favorable impression of Nebraska as a program that tries to do it the right way. What am I missing?

1. OSU - obvious

2. MSU - most sanctions of any B1G program

3. Purdue - the rest of these are just my complete, uninformed opinion of who seems slimy

4. PSU

5. Iowa

6. Wisconsin

7. Michigan

8. Nebraska

9. Indiana

10. Illinois

11. Northwestern

12. Minnesota - they suck so they can't be that dirty..

i know this isn't the intent of the OP, but moving away from an ncaa-rules-violation point and toward a sportsmanship perspective, i'd say wisconsin has established itself as the dirtiest program in the B1G under bielema

I wrote the Big 10 and the NCAA after the Reynolds choke of Yorgi.  Tressel gave Reynolds one game, because it was "out of character for the young man."  Pretty sure OSU has a culture where you can do anything you want to as long as you get away with it.  To me they have always been dirty, and even more so under Tressel.
