Stonum ticketed for driving with suspended license today.
according to @freepwolverines WR Darryl Stonum, to be sentenced on his DUI Friday, was ticketed and charged w/driving w susp license on Thurs.
I was all about chances a few weeks ago, but its time for Hoke to cut him.
Man, if this is true, I'm very disappointed in Darryl.
Yep.
Good grief. If he can't stay out of trouble after his second DUI--and so soon, no less--it's time for him to go.
I agree, I was backing this kid all the way till I read this.
if he thought he had special permission to drive to work or what have you, which you can get, but didn't actually get it.
Probably done, though.
Yeah, I doubt he got a hardship license after his second offense.
Hoke better set an example with Stonum. I'd be outraged if a coach at another school played a kid like this.
Let him finish his degree at UM and use the year to try to get himself back on track. If he does that and satisfies all of his DUI obligations and stays out of trouble, he will be considered for reinstatement for the 2012 season (no guarantee; solely Hoke's option).
I'm sorry, but that's just Buckeye Logic: "discipline" that actually isn't. As it stood this morning, after two DUIs and two probation violations, Stonum was likely to miss a chunk of this season. But now, after today's infraction, you suggest giving him an opportunity to start fresh next season. So, in the end, Michigan would end up getting more play out of him.
But, hey, everybody deserves a sixth chance.
First, the argument that a one season suspension constitutes no discipline at all is silly. Of all the discipline doled out to athletes, even at a program like Michigan, it is among the most severe.
Second, this has nothing to do with OSU. I understand why you would want to set OSU up as a strawman so you can turn around and easily knock it down, but discipline should be established based on what is best for the player and the program and not based on what another school like OSU might or might not do.
Stonum, like all of the UM players who have been around for the past 2-3 years, has stuck with Michigan through some pretty rough times. He also clearly has a drinking problem and needs some help. Despite his mistakes, I think it would be very wrong to abandon him now and not at least enable him to finish his final year at UM and get his degree. As for leaving open the possibility for him to play again after his one year suspension, I can understand why some people might not agree with that. But I would treat it similar to a 5th year senior and tell him he needs to earn that chance by working hard on the practice squad and by cleaning up his act and being a model citizen off the field over the next 12 months. That is a far cry from how a school like OSU would likely handle the situation.
I agree with everything you said except the part about stonum's drinking problem. This charge here for driving on a suspended licence clearly shows stonum has a driving problem.
This is the exact comment I was about to leave...
A Judgement Problem
somewhere right now your logic professor is very proud
We still don't know the circumstances of the incident. I think that, depending on the circumstances, his suspension should be at a minimum a suspension for 3/4 of the season and at most for the entire year and the bowl game with a chance of playing next season if he cleans up his act. I am confident Hoke will make the right call.
I really like Stonum. But it doesn't look like he wants to change at the moment. Can't imagine him remaining on the team after this.
The guy clearly needs help. The saddest part is that the athletic department provides all kinds of help to student athletes that avail themselves of it. Its kind of like the Braylon driving drunk a few days after the Jets announced their "free rides home" policy of hiring a car service for their players. Its one thing for a guy/gal that needs to get somewhere and has no other option than driving themselves. But it doesn't seem like there is any excuse for Stonum who has assumedly all kinds of resources at his fingertips . . .
It might be time for some counciling.
Welp, it looks like we just picked up another scholarship for 2012 . . .
We would have had it anyways......
Unless we were going to go the sit out for the year and take a redshirt route.
I don't think that's ever been done. Blount got back after nine games at Oregon, and if we were in a stretch run for a division title, I think any coach would put him bback on the team.
If he doesn't have an excellent excuse, which is highly unlikely, Hoke needs to show him the door.
Why couldn't he just carpool places with Terrelle Pryor ? ? ?
I hope D. Stonum gets some help related to what seems some serious judgement issues.
...is that the correct spelling is "Judgment."
I guess it needs to be pointed out that both "judgment" and "judgement" are acceptable. Also, you're trolling.
He's not trolling... and "judgement", as an alternative, i thought was acceptable in the UK? Either way, i always spell it judgment to avoid this very conversation.
Edit: I also find it comical that the most controversial part of the image is the spelling of Judgment.
When used in legal settings, it's always "judgment." However, I actually looked into this a couple years ago, and both spellings in American English are okay, after seeing it on the wall at my gym (Crunch- "No Judgements."). Turns out both are acceptable, though the version with the "e" is more British but still acceptable in American English (though I wouldn't put the "e" in there in an MSJ or any court document).

Thanks for clarifying it.
Here's a kid with nothing but blue sky ahead, and he screws up continually.
Kind of a shame, he's fast and talented. Back to Texas for him.
this is sad, i know it is self inflicted but damn.. i feel bad for the guy.
This sucks. Hoke should take a page out of Beilein's book and kick him off the team but let him finish his degree. I don't think this merits kicking this guy's future in the nuts...
Hopefully he can make a run at th NFL, but for now, it looks like his career here should/probably will be over. Good luck to him, it's a shame that he couldn't get it together.
Hoke gave him away back, but he definitely didn't take it. Thanks for the memories Stonum.
Damn damn damn...
Hopefully this kid can get his life in order, but I don't think he should be seeing the field again....he just doesn't get it at all.
Stonum is a pretty big dumbass. I'd like to see him have a chance to finish his career, but after personally seeing him do some really dumb shit in the last week, I think it's going to be a while before he wises up.
any details?
Nah. Nothing that outrageous, but kind of a "WTF" moment in light of his current situation.
I want to argue that he should be allowed to stay, but, I just can't. Man, this is sad.
could probably think up a good reason!
Let's not jump to this too fast. It's not confirmed yet, and we don't know any extenuating circumstances. Maybe there was a huge emergency. Cops do NOT let you go on things these days. Their careers depend on it.
He's probably done, but lets wait for everything to come out.

Anyone who acts above the law like this has no place distracting his team maters at Michigan. Goodbye Stonum.
*mates. Goddamn auto spell
I argued for him being gone after his most recent DUI. He has no regard for the law and it shows.
I can understand not wanting to give up drinking, especially at that age. It's also hard to have good judgment when you're shitcanned, so again I can sympathize/relate there too. But there is no way you need to drive a car if you live in Ann Arbor and have like 85 best friends (in addition to probably a bunch of students who would gladly give him a lift to Kroger or wherever he needed to go). I never had a car while I was at Michigan and would have had a tough time coming up with places I really wanted to drive to even if I'd had one. After two DUI's you should just sell the thing and throw a party with the profits. I just don't get it.

To anyone but a tattoo parlour owner or a shady auto dealer.
