Tom Dienhart chimes in with tsio, B1G thoughts

Submitted by Benoit Balls on

Found this article on Rivals ( http://collegefootball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1227496 ) this morning where Dienhart essentially states the obvious, Now is the time for the U of M to make hay vis a vis tsio.

Also he says that Nebraska is likely the favorite to win the Big Ten this year.

However, the money shot is where he says Gordon Gee's quote about hoping the coach does not fire him makes him look like a jock sniffer in a bow tie. Thats gold, Jerry! Gold!

Well I had my refund check (PLUS Loan for full CoA FTW) so at the beginning of spring semester I was buying all the great beers ever brewed. Right now I have a lost wallet (so no ID) and I'm living off of leftover money so I could come live with the girlfriend for the summer. So Svedka and Skittles it is.

And no, there will never be hope for Popov. Ever.

I'm not one of those people that freaks out when the media calls us Big Blue (even thought it isn't our nickname), but does anyone else find it irritating when the media waffles between calling Kentucky and Michigan "Big Blue"?

Just stick to one. I don't even think it's a cool nickname, Kentucky can have it. Rant over.

We are not 'BIG BLUE.'  That sounds lame in all the worst ways.

I'd like to also admonish the media's (ie ESPN) use of the ridonkulous prhase "WOLVERNATION."  What the heck is a wolvernation??

Finally, on a more personal level, I'd like to stress how annoying all of the Nittany Lion fans here in Pennsylvania with regards to "GO BLUE."  They either a.) think that we don't have the right to use the phrase because they too are blue and we have the maize component or b.) Try to make it some cheesy 'last laugh' line like we're talking about them "Exactly, GO BLUE! WE ARE!!  YUK YUK!"

Enough, PSU Fans-- GO BLUE is and has been a Michigan thing since Paterno was, well...  first eligible for Medicare??  Thats gotta be at least a hundred years ago right?

Count me as skeptical that Nebraska is going to walk into the Big Ten this year and grab the title.  I'd like to see how they do with a schedule that includes Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State, Iowa, Michigan, and Michigan State.  After all, life in the Big Ten has proven to be a little more difficult than Penn State imagined early on.

I was a little bit scared in my scaredy places when PSU won 3 straight in the mid-90s.

9 in a row cured me of that.

The current 3 loss streak just makes me angry.

But yeah, Penn State has been beat up plenty by the Big10.

Maybe we should just inform tOSU that we are switching our #1 rival, (and scheduling the last game) with Nebraska from now on.  If tOSU ever decides to embrace a policy of ethical behavior, they can re-apply for admission to the rivalry.

I love the "jock-sniffer in a bow tie" quote; it shows the difference in how things are done at TSIO compared to the University of Michigan.  No matter how bad things ever get at Michigan, I can't ever imagine someone using that epithet on MSC.

Nebraska has a good defense, but I think it all comes down to Martinez, again. I watched a bunch of their games last year and I'd say they are on par with MSU, Wis, so I think they have a shot at winning the conference.

I think they will roll through the non-conference schedule, then lose at Wis and will have a tough time gettting through PSU, UM away and then finishing with Iowa. 9-3

Lost their back up QB and have only two on the roster now. If Martinez gets hurt again, they're toast.

If not, they'll pretty much be the favorite, and they'll pretty muich steamroll Michigan. I just love how guys all the sudden think Michigan is going to be some tough out this season. Not gonna happen.

when you consider the introduction of divisional play,  title game, OSU turmoil, several new coaches, and adding Nebraska, seems like the conventional wisdom and usual favorites don't apply.

I'm curious if you long time Big Ten fans would agree that this season will be the most wide open and unpredictable conference championship race in decades.

As for Nebraska's prospects, our fans expect we'll be competitive, but beyond that, our last conference title was in 1999 so most of us are more optimistic than confident.

I think we should all agree to scrap the Big Blue nickname and just go with Massive Maize. Or Monumental Maize. Whatever. Think about it--maize comes first in "maize and blue," but no one ever gives love to our noble corn heritage. Except the Maize Rage, I guess. But that's just stupid...
