TomVH: Wayne Morgan Update

Submitted by TomVH on

Wayne Morgan sent me a text this morning to tell me he's probably going to hold off on his announcement. He said he's not sure when he'll do it, but it will probably be more than a few days.

I think it probably did, and now he's decided to slow things down and take his time. Nothing wrong with that. I'd rather him take his time and make the right choice for him, wherever that might be.

And one that needs to be made when 100% sure. The University of Michigan is an outstanding choice, and Wayne we of course hope you end up a Wolverine in the end!

Well thats sux.  Hopefully he is apart of this class when its all said and done, but all for the kid making sure he makes the right choice.  But this class is filling up very fast so I hope he is at least a silent to hold his spot.

While I completely agree Morgan is the silent commit. But I have never seen concrete proof (someone like Tom saying its Morgan). How are you so sure or what's your proof?

He's been going back and forth on this, so I'm not even sure how definitive this is. We'll just have to wait to see what he does, and when he does it.

You're missing the operative words in Tom's post.

There's been a silent commit since last week. Morgan isn't making his decision in a few days, he's making an announcement in a few days.

If anyone was affected by the numbers crunch at DB, it was Standifer yesterday, because there was only one spot left.

That's a distinction without a difference.

Cullen Christian was a silent commit for 6 months.

If Morgan has committed to Michigan, and his coach wants him to wait to make the announcement, I fail to see why that is a problem in your life. Worry about something worthwhile.

if he's holding off because, for example, his family is urging him to stay closer to home.  From the sound of things, not everyone is as sanguine about the situation now that Morgan has delayed his announcement as you are.

Ack. Big deal. If Morgan doesn't want to attend Michigan and play for Greg Mattison, some other highly regarded CB/S (Jarrod Wilson, De'Von Bogard, Will Hines) will. It's not worth worrying about 8 months before Signing Day, especially given the sheer numbers in the defensive backfield as a result of the 2010, 2011 and 2012 recruiting classes.

But having a consensus top 200 guy in hand is a lot better than not having a consensus top 200 guy in hand.  Morgan was a recruit the staff seemingly had in the bag.  All the other guys you mention are going to be more difficult to pull.  That's not saying they can't get another equally good recruit, just that they're going to have to go back to work on it.  That kinda sucks.

definitively that Morgan was the silent committ other than you. You may be right, but in most posts they were distinguising between the silent committs and Morgan. Even Tom just said he is going back and forth and we will just have to wait to see hwat happens.

That could mean either back and forth on who he likes or back and forth on when he announces, but I haven't read anywhere that Morgan was the silent committ (except here, from people who I don't actually consider authorities on the matter of recruiting).

Anyway, again you may be right...I just haven't heard that he was the silent, just a lot of speculation.

This was a decision HE made as to when to announce and is not just a function of the coaching staff attempting to prolong the spotlight on their program...

I have a feeling that he's getting pressure from everyone telling him he has time and shouldn't tie himself down right away. While there may be some ulterior motives such as keeping a spotlight on the program for longer or staying closer to home In the end stick to Occham's razor and realize the people around him are probably giving him what they think is the best advice. He'll probably go somewhere else and I wish him the best, but there's no need to think there's some Archie Collinsing going on or that Michigan is being Zetteled.

It doesn't seem like the wavering is because he's unsure about UM, so the actual date of the announcement doesn't really matter to me.  What's important is that we're still his #1, so it's only a matter of time.

on why wayne is deferring his decision until he's completely certain.

we should take it as a sign of maturity. some recruits might see their positional spots filling up and think they should pull the trigger asap to reserve their spot.

But with the recent influx in DB's, perhaps theres another position group that we will gain some commitments from sooner. Ideally i would love to see the OLine and DT addressed, bc those seem to be the most glaring needs for this class.

If you'd like the O-Line addressed, you should be reading TomVH's weekly posts, where he mentions Tommy Olson is visiting next week, and also spoke very encouragingly about Magnuson's visit next week. And don't forget Diamond is still hanging out there and might move his decision up.

As for DT, Pipkins, Day, O'Brien and Jaleel Johnson are all out there.

You should be noticing a trend by now. First, the staff got a couple O-linemen. Then, it got a bunch of linebackers. Then, some defensive ends. Then, some defensive backs.

With eight months to go before signing day, the coaches only need 3-4 more OTs (with at least 2 naming MICH their outright leader), 2 DLs (with at least 4 naming MICH as leader or in top 3), 1-2 WRs (with two naming MICH as their #1-2) and maybe a QB (Kiel) or RB (Dunn). They're doing a fantastic job.

Do you mean 3-4 offensive tackles or just 3-4 more offensive lineman?  Just curious, since we already have one tackle in Braden, 4-5 tackles seems like a lot.  Can most of these guys also play guard?

I played tackle for one year in the 5th grade, so my o-line knowledge is rather limited.
