Is the supplemental draft even an option?

I heard somewhere he would have to wait until next April regardless now. Don't know if that's lockout-related or not. Everything in the NFL is fuzzy these days...

Adam Schecter at ESPN said that the supplemental will be held despite the lockout assuming anyone is in the draft pool (no one is yet.)  He also said you need to apply to the NFL to enter the pool and explain why you didn't apply for the full draft, i.e. something must have changed between the regular draft deadline and now.  If Pryor were to have his suspension increased, that would def. qualify.  Don't know if the coach he promised to play leaving counts, though.

Doug Lesmerises of the Cleveland Plain Dealer has an article that casts some doubt on Pryor gaining eligibility for the supplemental draft. Evidently, the NFL doesn't allow a player to use a ploy to get into the supplemental draft:

A player must petition the NFL for special eligibility to enter the supplemental draft, and that petition always relies on a player's circumstance having changed since he could have declared for the NFL Draft.

A player might be declared academically ineligible, or get kicked off his team for some reason or engage in an activity that causes him to lose his NCAA eligibility. I double-checked with the NFL today, and what the NFL prohibits is a player who was eligible for the regular draft just changing his mind or attempting some kind of ploy to use the supplemental draft to his benefit.

For instance, two players went in the supplemental draft last July -- BYU running back Harvey Unga, who left BYU last April after violating the school's honor code, and Illinois lineman Josh Brent, who settled on the supplemental draft last June after trying and failing to regain his eligibility at Illinois by enrolling in community college for the spring semester.

How tSIO's fans have changed their opinion of TP! So much for having his jersey "hung up".

He is getting a lot of hate down there for all this (as he should), but it will be interesting to see how he handles it coming from people that claimed to love him. Based on his actions so far, it wouldn't surprise me at all if he sang like a canary in the future about everything if they push him too far.

just keeps getting better and better. For once gents its GREAT TO LIVE IN OHIO!  Columbus is burning and buckeye fans are scurring out like rats. Most that I've talked with will not even claim to have been fans in the past, thats while they wear thier buckeye gear.  This meltdown is sooooooo fast TP latest ride can't keep up.

Somebody needs to U-tube his walk of shame off campus.

Adam Schefter has been saying that the NFL is allowed to hold a supplemental draft, however no one has entered in it so there is no date set.

As of this morning he says no one has applied, we will see what he says in the next few days.

Who is going to want to draft pryor? Talk about the epitome of character issues and thats without even talking about skill or potential....

Pryor (probably) isn't worse than Newton, and we all know where he ended up in the draft...

Honestly I would take Pryor in the supplimental draft if I could get him as a third-ish round pick. The worst thing that can happen is you have an athletic freak on the field with character issues, which basically describes a good part of the NFL anyway.

Well, the worst that can happen is you have an athletic freak who insists on playing QB even though he's better suited elsewhere, and the next worse thing is you have an athletic freak who tries to play TE or WR but can't block or catch or run good routes because he's never been asked to before.  And who isn't willing to put in the off-season work because he thinks he doesn't need to.  I'm not sure either of those scenarios are worth a 3rd round pick.

True points, surely, but OTOH you have to believe Pryor would change if he needed to. I mean, he has to do something for money and if the way he can stay in the NFL is by playing WR, I think he'll eventually have to deal with it.

I will say that I doubt his first team keeps him very long, so you might be right that third is too high.

Plus, I think Cam Newton is significantly better than Pryor and I still think Cam Newton has an extremely small chance of making an impact in teh NFL at QB.  You'd think at some point, NFL GM's would make a list of the best QB's and see a trend:

Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees, Phillip Rivers, even the younger group - Matt Ryan, Sam Bradford, Josh Freeman.  Noticeably absent are the JaMarcus Russell's and Vince Young's of the world.

I have no ill will for Cam, but I'm afraid that past experience indicates his transition to the NFl will not be easy.

There are a lot of college players with poor attitudes that still succeeded despite it because they were physically so much better than the competition.  This often catches up with these guys in the pros.  As a Lions fan, I think of Charles Rogers and Mike Williams.  When you get to the NFL, you need to be athletically gifted and well behaved and a hard worker and all of that.  Plenty of talented guys bust in the NFL because of their bad attitudes.

I agree.

But, to tag along with JGB's point - most of the NFL has character issues.  It depends whether they're the kind that affect your on-field performance or not.

Charles Rogers - had no work ethic at all.  Smoked a lot of weed at MSU.  Those are character problems that affect your performance on the field.

TO - a dumb, immature, narcissistic idiot.  Also very successful in the NFL.

In my view, it comes down to whether a player has the right work ethic as to football related things.  For all we know, Pryor does.  Maybe he never misses a weight-lifting session, works out like a mad man, etc....  I don't actually know.  Assuming this is the case, his character issues as to other things may not matter for NFL purposes.  (I think this is JGB's point).

Yes, my point is that, for all his shortcomings, TP has the athletic ability to succeed at an extremely high level in the NFL. Taking a chance that his issues will stay out of the locker room seems to be reasonable, given how the whole Newton thing played out. Cam Newton has more off the field issues than Pryor, why not take (seemingly) less of a chance well after the first pick?

WolvinLA2

I don't know that Cam Newton has more issues than TP, I'd argue he does not.  And I don't think TP has near the talent or work ethic that Cam Newton has.  They played in different systems, but Cam Newton was a much more productive passer and runner than TP was, and TP was a three year starter, Cam only one.  They were different offenses, but I don't know why people think TP=Cam Newton just because they're both tall and black.

NFL teams got to see Cam perform in the combine, pro days and other individual workouts.  TP won't have that luxury, teams will just have to take a chance on him.  I doubt teams risk much for him.

You can argue talent and work ethic, but Pryor wasn't dismissed from school for academic dishonesty also amid theft allegations. He sold a few things, but I honestly don't think that's a big deal.

Tall and black might have something to do with it, but both can run like hell, both have off field issues and both are questioned as passers. The running and throwing applies to Tebow as well; they're all big, all standout runners and all have throwing issues.

I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say "most of the NFL has character issues."  Granted, I don't know them personally, I was under the impression that  the bulk of most NFL rosters consisted of pretty solid, high-quality, down to earth citizens.

The NFL has stated they will hold a supplemental draft in July if someone enters ie: ie even 1 person.

Its not a big spectacle like the regular draft is and honestly I cant see a team taking a 2-3 round flyer on a unproven prospect with character issues, oh shit Cam Newton went #1?....well damn

Where they're doing the "Bachelor Auction". Chris Elliott comes up to get "sold" to a bachelorette and he goes to the old grandmother for "two bits" (less than 25 cents). That would be a fitting pro career start for Terrelle in a karmic kind of way.
