Periodic Ohio State turdstorm UPDATE! Yesterday Eleven Warriors graciously posted that Maurice Clarett might be a troubled weirdo who tried to take down Ohio State after he got the boot, but at least he's a trying troubled weirdo and he's not all bad. This is a level of understanding I do not have with Tractor Traylor even after the guy died tragically.

11W's reward for this understanding is to have Ray Small go MoCo:

"We have apartments, car notes," he said. "So you got things like that and you look around and you're like, ‘Well I got (four) of them, I can sell one or two and get some money to pay this rent."

The wheeling and dealing didn't stop with rings. The best deals came from car dealerships, Small said.

"It was definitely the deals on the cars. I don't see why it's a big deal," said Small, who identified Jack Maxton Chevrolet as the players' main resource.

The Columbus Dispatch reported on May 7 that OSU was investigating more than 50 transactions between OSU athletes and their families and Jack Maxton Chevrolet or Auto Direct.

Representatives for Jack Maxton Chevrolet did not return repeated requests for comment.

NCAA rules prohibit student-athletes from benefiting from the sale of their merchandise. Small said he wasn't the only one.

"They have a lot (of dirt) on everybody," Small said, "cause everybody was doing it."

Man… Ray Small. That guy was in trouble from day one at OSU, threw regular public hissy-fits about it, and he wasn't even that good at football. If I was an Ohio State fan he would be in my circle of the damned. Their term for this rapidly expanding category that includes Kirk Herbstreit and (to the truly deranged) Chris Spielman is "Fake Buckeye."

You can add Mark "Club Trillion" Titus to that list after he posted there was definitely something "shady" going on with football players' cars, then followed it up with a rebuttal saying that he shouldn't get death threats because that's mean. Titus claims  the shadiness was to the point where most students knew or should have known what was going on.

Meanwhile, the local news station is investigating the Gibson thing and while that transaction continues to get more complicated it's not getting proportionally more explicable:

10 Investigates [sic] found that Gibson had a trade-in. He traded in a 2003 Chevrolet Monte Carlo that BMV records showed he bought for $15,400 just seven months earlier.

But the dealership may have given him only $1,000 toward the trade-in, [instead] dropping the sales price of the car he was buying by a substantial amount.

10 Investigates [sic] has learned that's what Kniffin has told investigators with the BMV.

The trade-in business materializes as predicted; an explanation for how Thad Gibson scraped together enough money to buy two cars worth a total of 30k in less than a year is yet to be explained. Along The Oletangy responds to the investigation apparently clearing the transactions:

In any case, it doesn't matter what the BMV finds when they analyze Jack Maxton Chevrolet's tax forms as long as no special treatment was given to Ohio State football players.

It's obvious plenty of special treatment was provided, but where is the smoking gun?

Position paper on demolition of Ohio State program and whether it is good or bad. If Ohio State was going to fall apart by Notre Daming themselves with a series of coaching hires ranging from questionable to insane, that would be a thing to be conflicted about in the same way certain Ohio State fans are bored with a terrible Michigan team they're just going to blow out.

This is a different thing entirely since it suggests the fence Tressel legendarily put up around Ohio's borders is one based on massive NCAA noncompliance. Meanwhile, thanks in part to this (and in part to Michigan imploding) they've gone 9-1 and turned the Big Ten into their personal playground. If the NCAA finds proof of this massive noncompliance and OSU gets bombed into the stone age and is no longer any good, there's no conflict there. It's an unadulterated good. Michigan has been hypersensitive about this stuff since the Ed Martin Day Of Great Shame, and it's obvious their main rival hasn't. Putting that on even footing will help put the rivalry there if it doesn't swing it all the way back to the Cooper days, which fine by me.

Hot under the collar, part II. ESPN's Mike Fish, you may remember from the above-referenced Maurice Clarett bombing, has a new article. This is the header image:

Hey let's rehash this again. MZone noticed that I hadn't mentioned Lloyd Carr's election to the College Football Hall of Fame and asks why I hate Lloyd Carr, complete with requisite psychoanalysis and link to me being mad in the immediate aftermath of the Hoke hire when everyone was mad, something I've obviously backed away from in multiple column-length pieces since.

To defend myself: I don't take the CFHOF seriously. It just elected Deion Sanders. When Tom Curtis was elected it warranted about two sentences. For better or worse, I am totally uninterested in the charity work of rich people. I've also said my bit about Carr as Michigan's coach over and over again. Contrary to two-bit psychoanalysis it was not negative, or at least it was far less negative than many.

And I am pissed off at the hostility to change that's obvious every time any former Carr player says something about anything. We've got a program of Joe Morgans. I'm worried how that will manifest itself on the field. It's not hard to draw a contrast between what's gone down the last three years and what would have gone down if Bo was still around. Bo would have been on the warpath; he probably would have dropped by to scream at Rodriguez some. The impression we've gotten from every one of Carr's former players is that there is exactly one person responsible for Michigan's decline—Rich Rodriguez—and not only is that incorrect (Horror, DeBord, Tressel vs Carr) but it's detrimental to Michigan's future. If we got back to the days where every bowl opponent laughs at how predictable we are that will not be good.

(I don't think that's happening because Borges is a real live offensive coordinator and not a broken robot that only calls zone left. Hoke uber alles.)

Eyerolling reorg.  Adam Wodon on the inevitable hockey realignment coming sounds like anyone talking about anything last year when talking about conference realignment:

It all starts with Notre Dame. (Well, it all started with Penn State and the Big Ten, but that's already happened.) Think about it — you're Notre Dame's president. Your sports teams all play in the Big East, or, in the case of football, is the most storied program in college sports. You fire up CHN's iPhone app one morning to check the hockey standings, and what do you see? You see Notre Dame competing against some MAC and D-II schools. You recoil. This is not what Notre Dame does. This is not what Notre Dame is.

That is not a knock on the other schools, it's just reality. There is no way that Notre Dame is staying put. That means that the CCHA is certain to lose its remaining powerhouse (from an institutional, NCAA-wide standpoint), and fall further to seven teams. That means the CCHA is in trouble, as a whole.

Maybe Wodon's got some inside chatter on this that he's refusing to mention in an effort to make his column as annoyingly speculative as possible, but this is the impetus for an elaborate reorganization scenario that sees Notre Dame move to Hockey East because they'd rather play Merrimack (seriously) than Ferris State.

Notre Dame is choosing between some games against BC and then a bunch of schools no one at Notre Dame has heard of plus flying for literally every road game and staying in the CCHA. While ND has money, are they going to spend it on that for no real benefit? And will Hockey East expand to an eleven teams just for the dubious benefits of having ND in the conference? Travel costs matter in hockey, the longest season in the NCAA, and no one is going to make enough money on an ND move to justify the increased costs even if "this is not what Notre Dame does." Yeesh.

The late Carr years were like a dependable old Ford that's done its time but doesn't run quite like it used to.  So we traded it in for an exciting, flash Alfa Romeo that spent most of the time in the shop and routinely broke down at the side of the road.

It's still too early to know what kind of car Hoke would be, but I suspect he's like one of the newer Fords--an updated version of the old timer, with more modern suspension, transmission, etc. (i.e. staff), but probably won't still be in use 13 seasons later.

Though the live axle on the rear suspension as a metaphor for our special teams is disturbing...

Could go in all kinds of terrible directions with this metaphor, but suffice to say, Ford is making some good, dependable cars that perform well and have modern attributes.

I see Hoke as doing the same...we go back to the (good) Carr years on defense and have an offense somewhere in-between the Carr and Rich Rod variants.  Maybe we end up like Iowa but with more shotgun and better recruits?  That's a pretty good scenario.

The apocalypse scenario is we end up like ND under Ty Willingham...a whole lotta "meh," despite the good recruiting.  I guess that would be a Chrysler?

I can't believe the OSU student newspaper broke the Ray Small story. ESPN interviewed the students who wrote it, and besides probably not being comfortable in front of a TV camera, they've got to be terrified that some local who never graduated high school is going to firebomb their apartments.

It's funny how sensitive so many are to any former player who dares speak of the disconnect they felt with Rodriguez and yet Brian comes out today and pisses all over Carr (yet again) discrediting the Hall of Fame and charity (and by extension the nearly $1 million raised by former players he inspired).  I thought Brian had reached the low point with his blasting of Edwards, wriiten with a hatred and venom that made rivals applaud.  I was wrong.

I remember all the school girlish swooning over Rodriguez.  He was going to change football as we had known it under Carr.  Barwis was going to put an end to that so-called country club atmosphere.  Oh for the days when hearts were all a flutter, more press access under Rodriguez, more excitement, more wins, more championships.  Nobody cared who was slammed, Carr, former assistants, former players, current players, no nothing mattered.

And, when it all failed, it became Rodriguez as victim.  Carr did it to him, admissions did it to him, compliance did it to him, former players did it to him, the Free Press did it to him, and on and fucking on it goes.

To be fair, Braylon is kind of an insufferable shit-head in every walk of life, even in those that are completely irrelevent to Michigan football. He's more arrogant than good, he funded a scholarship that memorializes his own ego, he throws a tantrum about a "tradition" of his own creation, he shits on the heads of the fans of the teams he plays for, and, to top it off, drives drunk.

You can debate the Carr/RR/Hoke/whatever rigamarole until you're blue in the face, but I'm sure of one thing: Braylon's a fucking dickhead.

Agree on Braylon, sadly. Wish I didn't have to, because I loved watching him play here. But you may want to save your breath since the poster you're responding to clearly didn't read the OP, or did so with a preconceived notion of what Brian was saying in his head already.

I mean, he calls Brian's post "pissing all over Carr" when it doesn't even talk about Carr. Brian just says a) the College Football Hall of Fame is kind of lame b) charity from rich folks doesn't mean that much to him bu YMMV c) the way former Carr players talk about the Rodriguez era annoys him. The only mention of Carr specifically is a link to Brian's old post about the Carr era.

There's this major faction on the board who just loves to rip on Brian regardless of the actual content of the posts. I don't really get it.

Outstanding post - and i agree with you 100% regarding your comments on: OSU, CFHOF, Lloyd Carr [et al] and 'rich people doing charity work'.

Prediction: unless OSU can call in some kind of astronomical back-room marker (and Saban won't let them use his), this 'ncaa investigation' will end badly for them - somewhere in the realm of what was handed to USC last year.

When disgruntled ex-player or players with an axe to grind start coming out of the Buckeye wood-work, there is no telling where that may lead.

 Everybody is doing it. Right?

Posted: May 28, 2011 by Tyler Moeller

My mom and I were sitting down talking today as she showed me all her new articles about me and the team - like I don’t know what is going on with the NCAA and the media’s relentless persecution of The Ohio State Football Program. As she rambled on about the articles she read and pre-season magazines (lol, I know it’s pretty real in the Moeller household), we came across video of The Ray Small TV interview where he retracted his words after saying all those things about The Ohio State and our team. This got me thinking… with all this continuous DRAMA surrounding the program, I had decided to stay out of it by not say anything publicly, which is why I deleted my Facebook page and have not been blogging… today I changed my mind.

I think many people, because of this new age of social media, have this perception that there is this big underground black market of Ohio State Football memorabilia sold by CURRENT Ohio State football players. People believe we live our “lavish” lifestyles because of special discounts and selling of personal items. I guess if Ray Small is a credible resource to get all your information from then these are probably a figment of your imagination….

…and yea, IF you think someone else was a good person to get information from, than you are probably jealous of my ”lavish” lifestyle that includes going without AC in my Olentangy Commons luxurious apartment for over a month, yep… pretty lavish.

I could talk in depth about the allegations by the NCAA which were SELF REPORTED, but I don’t think the NCAA or Ohio State would appreciate it but still, I would though like to point out a few things:

1. Coach Tressel is a better person than most people can ever dream about becoming and has helped me grow as a person since my first day at Ohio State. Yes, he made a mistake that has been blown out of proportion, but one mistake does not define a person. It’s funny, I walked into church last Sunday to find Coach Tress worshipping in the front row – 20 minutes early so he could give a speech to our group because a student intern asked him if he would come talk to us. That is just one of the things he does all the time that people don’t see. They don’t see the 1000′s of hours he has spent with young children, sick patients, our armed forces, etc… Sadly, many just see a coach in a sweater vest that “lied”. They miss the great man that gives back to the world 24/7 and helps young kids like me grow into men; even the ones that everyone had already given up on like Ray Small.

2. To the Gold Pant’s Committee: We treasure our gold pant’s and UNDERSTAND the depth of what they mean, look at our record.

3. I drive a car my parents bought (my uncles old car) and they pay for my cell phone bill, car insurance, and health insurance. I live off campus in a dump apartment that hasn’t had screens in the windows or sliding door since we moved in while the AC has been broke for a month. I haven’t been out on the town socially in over a year and thankfully, my girlfriend isn’t into that knight and shining armour 50′s bullcrap, so we usually split the bill 50/50 when we do go out to dinner. Still, because I live in Columbus full time for school and football, by the end of the summer I’m often asking my parents to help me out a little.

4. ^ In reference to Number four many kids that come into the program are not fortunate enough to have the support system that I do. I understand their hardship and until you walk in their shoes, maybe you shouldn’t judge them so harshly on mistakes they make when they are young. Additionally, I understand that NCAA rules are in place for a purpose, but can you imagine being a player and watching calendars and photo’s of yourself being sold and auctioned off for lots of money, but you can’t even get a picture yourself to hang on your personal wall unless you pay for it at full retail? If I bought one from the dispatch I would have to pay $14.99 for a 5×7 of myself? Is that right?

6. You can take what I said out of context or you can say whatever you want because your basketball bench riding career is over and you have to talk about this stuff to keep to veiwers. I totally understand that keeping the drama alive keeps the $$$$ rolling in and your boss happy. It’s okay, I understand, WE understand and it’s not going to break us, you’ll see.

I think Michigan fans ought not get too excited about possible sanctions against Ohio State.

Whatever. It is commonplace for scandalous cheaters like Tressell to point, or have their minion point, to 'all of the good things' done by the cheater. We are not talking about the good things he has done, and he gets no extra credit for doing what is right, knucklehead. He is being criticized, rightfully and justifiably so, for a long career of willful ignorance and possibly willful breaking of the rules, and certainly and unarguably lying to the governing agency of the very sport he works in. Furthermore, he lied to his superiors, the fans, etc. Go defend someone who has been wrongfully charged dude.
