OT - David Barrent (MSU OL) retires from football

Submitted by gebe659 on

Another tough break for MSU.  David Barrent has retired from football due to chronic back problems.  He was a 4* Army All-American back in the day (he had offers from Wisconsin, Iowa, Nebraska, Stanford, etc.) and probably would've been a good one.

This comes only a couple of months after QB Joe Boisture retired from football, also because of back issues.

You hate to see a young player have to walk away from the game.   The good thing is that he'll have his health in the future and also it sounds like he's going to stay in school to get his degree in mechanical engineering.   Best of luck to him.

This sucks for college football. Poor kid.

Chronic low back pain is an awful reason to have to turn away from one's competitive dreams. He seems bright; I wish him well as he begins to focus more on academics, his new friends, and bodily health.

This is unfortunate but in looking at his bio this young man is an Academic All B1G selection in mechanical engineering so his prospects look positive.

"I"ll miss the camaraderie," Barrent said in a prepared statement. "I've made lifelong friendships, but I'll definitely miss being on the field competing with my teammates. I'm thankful for the opportunity to remain close to the program while pursuing my bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering."

It must have been difficult to write that statement.

Wish him the best.  You never want to see a kid be unable to pursue one of his dreams because of an injury at such a young age.

Never wanna see something like this happen to a young athlete, we can all agree on that.  I'm glad that he was smart enough to make the hard decision to walk away before anything else happened.

Good luck to him in the future.
