OT- Wayne State football player shot, killed in Detroit

Submitted by BiSB on

Cortez Smith, a junior corner at Wayne State University, was shot and killed today in downtown Detroit.  He was 20 years old.

Smith was, I believe, a teammate of Will Campbell, Teric Jones, and Thomas Gordon at Cass Tech.

Rest in Peace, young man.

is that Cortez was trying to be the peacemaker in the argument. My gf is an Athelete at WSU and was a friend of Cortez. Its disgusting that things like this happen over a petty misunderstanding.

Some people might remember he went to Indiana, but for certain reasons he didn't last long.

Shame that he lost his life, my twitter has been filled with 'R.I.P. Cortez' tweets all day (I go to WSU). My prayers go to the family.

It will never stop because walking away is now for "pussies" just like using your fists. The way you solve it now it is to pull a gun on someone but people are so numb to that now people have to pull the trigger. Usally over the dumbest shit too.

That's a pretty busy area (for Detroit), especially given the fact the Wings were playing tonight. It's right near the old Ponchartrain, just a block north of Cobo.

People need grow up and harden the fuck up. No one knows what happened but it probably involved a stupid comment and more than likely a girl in the middle and resulted in a kid killed because of it. Just stupid "pride" getting in the way again.

"No one knows what happened"

Yet you still want to insinuate?

Stop.

People die all the time over meaningless S#$T.  That doesn't mean stereotypes should be brought in.

RIP young man. This kind of stuff is just.... it makes you wonder how messed up your life must be and have been to be so desensitized that it makes sense to shoot and kill a guy over an argument.

In what universe do you go from "I'm mad" to "I'm actually shooting someone dead." I mean I'm sure we've all been really mad about something at some point, maybe even while we were drunk, but I doubt anyone here has killed a person or had it really cross our mind.

Sad, sad, sad state of affairs.

On average, 6500 African-American men die each year as a result of homicide. That number is out of the total  of 16,500 Americans who die on average each year from homicide, 80% of whom are men.(I found these statistics at FBI.gov)

Think about those numbers. More BLACK males die each year then have died in the past ten years in Iraq and Afghanistan.  That should horrify anyone with a conscious.

Does anyone ever read of these statistics? Do we ever see "There is no excuse for violence against men" stickers? Do we ever see large protests, tv commercials, documentaries or famous persons speaking out on this ongoing tragedy? All too rarely in my opinion.

. All this focus on violence towards women blinds us to the holocaust of males--black males in particular--that is happening in America. When it is statistically more dangerous to be a black man in the US then a soldier in a war zone you know something is terribly wrong.

...because black men aren't as pretty as Natalee Holloway.  They don't make for good television.

If one white girl dies or disappears, it's all over CNN for weeks and months.  Because white girls matter more than everyone else in America.

(This is sarcasm, in case you can't tell.)
