2012 Mock Drafts

Submitted by Ziff72 on

I realize a 2012 mock draft is pretty ridiculous and I'm ashamed to say I've looked at more than 1trying to avoid work, but I did come across a few items I thought were worthwhile to talk about.

1. Jerell Worthy seems to be in everyones top 10.  I thought he was pretty good, but I was shocked to see him this high.  I guess it's my Sparty bias.  Do you guys see him being defensive player of the year?   Based on his draft ranking that's what he could be.

2.  North Carolina would have been ridiculous on defense last year.  Everyone knew about the defensive talent that was suspended last year and they had players littered thru the 1st 3 rounds.  Well they have 2 DE and 1 more LB listed for next year.

3. Again no Mich players listed.  I do think Mike Martin still has that potential. His play last year before he got hurt was astounding.   We'll just have to wait and see.

Here's 1 draft if you want to check it out.

Worthy is pretty good. I didn't think he was a top 10 talent, but I'm not a scout either. I think Martin will shoot up the draft boards throughout the season as he won't be facing double teams every play like he did last season.

he will be facing a double team every play, right? He's playing the 1 tech, nose, while BWC is slated to start at the 3 tech. This means Martin will be shaded to one side or the other of the center, and will likely have to take on 2 blockers, at least to start each play, before one peels off for a linebacker.

obviously this is over-simplifying the situation, and they have shown in spring ball that they want to move MM around a bit, but for the most part i expect him to be taking on double teams fairly often if he plays the 1 tech as we suspect he will. this is ok for Mich, b/c he has shown he's a beast at splitting double teams, but it might not be great for his NFL prospects since i would think he will be a 3 tech in the pros. That said, i expect him to be a very good NFL player as well.

For those of you who do not have ESPN Insider:

Top 10.

1. Andrew Luck - QB - Stanford

2. Quinton Coples - DE - UNC

3. Matt Barkley - QB - USC

4. Matt Kalil - OT - USC

5. Jerel Worthy - DT - MSU

6. Donte Paige-Moss - DE - UNC

7. Alshon Jeffery - WR - South Carolina

8. Jayron Hosley - CB - Virginia Tech

9. Jonathan Martin - OT - Stanford

10. Janoris Jenkins - CB - Florida *This is if he doe not enter the supplemental draft due to being kicked off the time.

Here are some other players of interest too:

17. Mati Te'o - LB - Notre Dame

18. Mike Adams - OT - Ohio State

31. Jared Crick - DT - Nebraska

Like always the ESPN bias shows the Big Ten under represented, which I fully expect to change as the season goes on. Also I think Matt Barkley is a little bit of a stretch right now and is based more on high expectations then anything else. He will have to make a huge leap this year to be the 3rd overall pick. I can see him being like Jake Locker from this year, getting a lot of love early on, but due to some inconsistency throughout the season, dropping down the big board. Finally Mati Te'o continues to be overrated IMHO.

Mike Martin will be a first round draft pick. NFL franchises will fall in love with his personality off the field as well as love his abilities on it. He will play in an improved Michigan defense this season, and he'll be drafted similarly to Brandon Graham last year. I mean, three top Big Ten defensive lineman were selected in the first round this year. You don't think Martin can be in the top three defensive lineman?

Am I being overly optimistic for him here? He's been a shining star without any real talent around him (RVB late round pick?).

I checked out NFL Draft Site since I am not an insider subscriber

and I was quite intrigued by the following in the 2012 draft:

  • They have Terrelle Pryor going 17th overall to the Raiders (insert tats/Raiders QB/fat jokes/codeine syrup jokes here)
  • David Molk to the Giants at 52
  • They have Mike Martin going 86th overall to Kansas City; personally, I think he goes higher after he goes all HULK SMASH and destroys the workout numbers
  • Kirk Cousins to the Cowboys at 71...srsly.

A lot of Sparties over at RCMB are predicting Cousins as a first-round pick.  I think I read it in the Mario Ojemudia thread on the Duffy board.  Anyway, they seem to think that this will help them land Morris.  I think both events are exceedingly unlikely.

I believe that by the end of this season, he will be a first round pick.  With the tutelage of Mattison, who as a Baltimore native, I would label as fundamental if not to a fault (albeit in comparison to Rex Ryan), I see him being used in situations similar to Haloti Ngata in the Ravens defenses of the past three years.  Martin is unbelievably strong, as we all know, and assuming he stays healthy will be able to display that in more ways than the past.  He is also very quick, and surprisingly fast in space for a guy his size, and as Clarkiefromcanada mentioned, could come close to the 48 that Paea put up this year in the bench press at the combine (it is only 225 lbs, and with all due respect to humans, Hulk can lift that with his pinky).  I see Mattison's coaching as a very big bonus in the eyes of scouts, and can only see that helping Martin, and any prospect coming out of Michigan after GERG's departure, and Mattison's subsequent hire.

i definitely think martin will impress in combine workouts, but hes not gonna have the productivity to be a 1st rounder. especially if he stays at NT. plus im sure scouts will raise the usual red flags: hes not big enough, his arms are too short, his skin is too green, etc

Is really quick off the snap. Moves well for being as big as he is. Definetely a good looking prospect deserving of that spot but I believe, and I could be wrong, hes a Junior so who knows. Although granted with being good athletically, the kid hops offsides at LEAST 1 time a game...The defensive opposite of their OT Dj Young

I love how Worthy is the #5 pick but Martin isn't big enough.  The difference in height is 1 inch.  The difference in weight is due to RR and co. wanting everyone to be lean.  If it helps him, Hoke will have him put some good weight back on.  There's about a 10 lb difference between the two last I checked.  Worthy just over 300, Martin just under.

With good health in the 4-3 he should really make a name for himself outside of the Big Ten.

biased?  Yes.  But remember how highly people thought Greg Jones would go?  Certainly higher than Mouton.  How did that work out?

Mike Martin will be in the 2nd to ealry 3rd round and 2 years down the road will be considered a steal who was really underrated. This year, provided he stays healthy, will be a huge boost and playmaking year for him. He is in a 4 -3 and able to move around, and he is being coached by Mattison. He should really excel this year!
