OT: Lions tried getting Peterson
The Lions tried trading up for Patrick Peterson. I believe this would have been a great move but Im satisfied with are draft.
I'll take the three players they got instead.
I saw that as well on sportscenter. As nice as it would have been for the Lions to get Peterson, I am happy with Fariley, Young, and Leshoure and if they had traded up for Peterson, they wouldn't have gotten any of them.
I'll take Fairley any day - the Lions are going to have a dominant defensive line, which will only help the defensize backfield, and in my opinion, defensive backs are more of a risk than a guy like Fairley or Suh last year.
That was before they knew Fairly would be available at 13.
I'm guessing they have no regrets, since rushing the passer is a more effective way to stop the long ball than hoping the corner you draft turns into the "shutdown" variety, of which there are probably only 2 or 3 in the entire league.
but I'd be pretty peeved if the Lions pulled a Falcons and sold the farm for one player. They don't have the luxury of being one game away of playing in the Super Bowl. I don't even think the Falcons made a good move when all they needed to do to possibly win that game is pressure Rodgers a little more...
Exactly what I said. The Lions need to make it into the playoffs first before making such a bold move. Right now they still need to add bodies and quality football players to make this team better. I believe they did that with the first three picks.
a franchise corner is always, always far more valuable than a franchise WR. Detroit wasn't offering as much as Atlanta, and Peterson has shown pretty amazing talent.
That being said, getting Fairley, Young, etc. and keeping next year's draft intact seems like a far better move at this point. Time will tell!
I agree with both of you but no body knew Fairley would fall that far.
Yeah Peterson is good, but if you told the Lions that Fairley would fall to them, there is no way they would still offer that. I am really happy with the way the Lions draft turned out.
I will never understand why there is so much value placed into top draft picks. I get that the top 10 picks are often something special, but you are far more likelty to get an average run of the mill starter than a franchise player.
The cardinals are idiots for not taking this trade, but thank god they didn't. It would have taken something as insane as a julio jones like trade (2 #1s, 2 #2s, 3rd and 4th rounder)

just glad the lions seem to be taking the draft seriously as a chance to improve. they've been aggressive this and last moving up to get the picks they want. opposite of the patriots model of success, but oh so much better than watching millen piss away pick after pick.
I just can't help marveling at the Patriots. Multiple first-round picks every year, and generally multiple later-round picks as well. Whoever runs the show over there is really really good at what he does.
The Patriots don't attend the combine. They don't care as much about 40-speed and how high he can jump as much as how well he plays football.
I find it really hard to believe that a team would skip the combine all together but, if true, it might explain their dominance. The only ones to go against the herd.
Isn't it nice to watch the Lions on draft day to not be one of the incompetent teams?

The verdict on Fairley will obviously take some time, however I think Peterson is going to be a star in the NFL and would have been not only a huge talent for the Lions but a HUGE NEED as well.
The fact that the management is making intelligent decisions and trying to put a winning product on the field excites me beyond belief.
I wish Peterson was the one who fell to #13 instead of Nick Fairley...

I'm not a big fan of trading to move up that high in the draft. Like someone else said, it's not worth mortgaging your franchise. As long as you mostly make smart picks throughout the draft, you can fill needs and find players who can get you to the upper echelon.
Unfortunately, Matt Millen sucked at finding talent and dug us into a giant hole.
I will start this by saying I am a Bears fan.
Fairley was a great pick up at #13 although I question if he has the same make up between the ears as Suh to be as dominant. I understand the pick just happy I do not have to root for him.
As for the rest of the draft-IMO Lions needed to pick up at least one solid starter on the O-line. Stafford does not scare anyone to this point and he is just another hard sack from being Glass-Man in the legue. Maybe they find patch work in free agency but there was good talent in the 2nd and 3rd rounds that made more sense to me then RB.
What pisses me off is that the Packers had another great draft.
Fairley may not have the same mentality as suh but competing with suh and all of the vets on the dline will push him to work harder than he might have. Once he realizes that he's going to have to earn his playing time i think it'll click for him
Kind of happy the trade didn't work out because Fairley is just as good as Peterson and didn't cost them anything (plus, they were able to then get Leshur(sp?), and I'm guessing that pick (or more appropriately, the picks that Detroit traded for that pick) would have been involved in the trade.
It is great to see the Lions finally have some competent coaching and administration. I still have some questions about the team going into next year, especially at DB and on the offensive line, but this defense is going to be scary for years to come.
I wouldn't been have a godfather offer like atlanta's cuz they would only be dropping 8 spots instead of 19. it probably would have been our first fourth and a third next year. or something like that. we wouldn't have blown up two drafts
I think Peterson was the best overall player in the draft and was hoping he'd find his way to the Lions all year. That being said, the Cardinals are dumb not to take a trade with that many holes on their roster especially at QB.
The Lions just need to sign a veteran LB and CB and they are well on their way to being... gulp... good?!
They drafted a backup to Suh and a back up to Logan. Classic Lions. Great job getting help for the back 7, guys. Who's going to play LB for Detroit next season again?

you actually think Logan is starting over Titus Young? Logan is a returner and occassional trick play guy. Young is replacing Derrick Williams and Bryant Johnson who were baaaaad.
And Fairley will be in a 3man rotation with Suh and Corey Williams. Do we need him? No but we could use him. And whether or not it is the right pick comes down to your valuation on talent v. need in each specific case. In this case, I think Fairley may be worth it. You don't know the answer to this and neither do I. We likely won't be able to judge for a couple years.
You may be right. However, Titus Young is mentioned as a returner as well, by Lions mgmt also. He is not a need. Fairley had a great game in the NC. My understanding is that he took a lot of games off prior to that and was out of shape. Excuse me if I don't expect the Lions to be the franchise that can provide the best possible leadership and opportunity for growth. Their track record in the past speaks volumes to the contrary, IMO.
And if it's true that we need to wait and see to make a judgement on Fairley for a couple of years, that's the wrong pick. That alone makes their draft suspect and certainly not worthy of all the praise that's been heaped on them locally and nationally. If they can't be judged, then, they shouldn't given an A/B in the draft. They should get an incomplete.
You said it, "Do we need him? No, but we could use him." Neither of these guys are needs. Who is going to play LB next year? CB? That is their are of need.
The Lions should focus on the back 7and offensive line. Keep the games low scoring and close. Give yourself a chance to win at the end with the all world kicker.
