2011 NFL Draft

Submitted by Rico616 on

Its sports holiday today! The NFL Draft has to be one of my five favorite days on the sports calendar.

The Lions pick at 13 tonight, I have no idea who they'll draft. I've heard Tyron Smith, Prince Am, Bowers, Kerrigan, etc. I think all Lions fans can agree that they need help on OL and every aspect of defense.

What do you like best about the draft? Will it be when they draft Cam Newton, say he's a "cant miss" and 3 years later he's riding the pine? But like the commercial says...its where championships are built, I'm counting down the clock...

Also if interested, Todd McShay's 7 round mock draft, you have to be an espn insider:

Ive heard alot of tryone smith since dallas is trying to trade out or that OT from BC

but i seriously wouldnt mind a CB or Bowers, i think Bowers is a good risk high reward player at the 13th pick.

Bowers stock has been taking a huge hit on injury concerns. I wouldnt mind drafing Bowers if hes still around in the early 2nd round and maybe moving up to grab him. Mayhew has said that its almost certain that the Lions will make a trade.

I cant wait its like christmas.

This. The O-Lineman in this draft aren't exactly world beaters and not worthy of a low-mid first round pick. If Prince drops to 13 and the Lions don't take him I may throw something at the TV. Someone opposite of Delmas at safety is important aswell. I think the Lions can also pick up, who appears to be a vastly underrated LB, Mason Foster from Washington in the middle rounds.

I would love for the Lions to get Prince.  I've seen mocks where hes gone, he falls to the lions, or he goes past the lions.  In any case, i think our priority should be CB, and that might mean Jimmy Smith.  He, potential-wise, might be better than Prince, but he comes with MSU-like character concerns.

I'd settle for tyron smith or daquan bowers as second choices tho

Yesterday on 97.1 they were talking Jimmy Smith's "character issues", supposedly hes had tons of off field issues. I think theres a fine line because you want high character guys but then again you dont want to pass up on great players because of past mistakes.

Maybe it is just because the lockout is looming (I know it was enjoined yesterday, but it will be appealed) but I have had zero interest in t his year's draft.  Hopefully my Giants are able to get somebody who can really help them next year (OL or LB) but I think I may just watch Steve Carell's farewell on The Office and check out draft results later.

I love Mayhew's approach to drafting.  You basically have to watch the entire thing because you never know when he's going to move around for a pick.  Every year he does some head-scratchers that end up looking brilliant when you see the guy play.  Other things:

-Mel Kiper being an idiot / Seething hatred between Kiper and McShay.

-Awkwardness inherent in 38 hours of coverage.

-Borderline homo-erotic phrasing.

-Al Davis being Al Davis.

-Seeing where the Michigan guys go (and therefore deciding which teams to like)

He actually wasn't himself last year. His first round pick was...Rolando McClain, a productive college player, who then went on to have a productive rookie season. Everyone thought he'd take Bruce Campbell, an unproductive college player who did well at the combine, in the first, and indeed Davis took Campbell...in the fourth.

My Raiders have no first round pick this year, so there's less opportunity for Al to blow his money on a big/fast guy who can't really play.

I just hope Newton doesn't get picked first overall. Yeah, I know it looks unlike right now, but I can still hope. If he doesn't go at one I could see him falling way down the board. PP should be the No. 1 pick. He has a freak athlete.

He cartainly didn't help his case on Gruden interview.  It took him several 'ho-hums' before he could name a single play they ran at Auburn.  Then he went with "38".  Yeah, not really an NFL playbook there.

The promo says, "Newton: he adds pages to your playbook".  Not if he can't read it.

And then he used a GUN as an analogy for how he handles criticism.  The look on Gruden's face was priceless!  If the over/under was Jamarcus Russell, I still might take the under.  I've never seen so many negatives on a prospect being talked about in the top 10, let alone #1!

  • No experience with NFL playbook
  • Questionable intelligence (flunked out of UF, not exactly Harvard)
  • Questionable on the field decision making
  • Laundry list of off the field concerns
  • Not overly impressive when talking with media (face of franchise? - yikes!)
  • Only proved himself in 1 yr of college experience
  • Lack of success experienced by spread qbs in NFL

And with all these negatives, what are you drafting?  A freak athlete with a decent arm?  Doesn't sound like a #1 pick to me...

there was an espn piece that studided qb's from national championship teams in the nfl....none of them make it

Genreally they are surronded by the best players in college, and don't have to do much themselves. Stars of the nfl normally were on medicore to good, but not great college teams.

i.e. Flacco d2

Ryan BC

Stafford Georgia

and thats just recently

every aspect of the lions defense does not need help. i feel confident about our front line, and delmas, so only a shade over half our defense needs a complete overall. sad that's actually progress...

Greg Jones would have been drafted higher had he stayed another year. Who knows maybe someone grabs him in the 3rd round, did anyone see Denever grabbing Tebow in the 1st round last year?

Also one of my favorite times to watch tv... The only problem is that they moved it from Saturday. I used to have a badass all day grill and drink party when it was on Saturday. Now that it's Friday night, it sucks donkey balls for trying to throw a party. My NFL team is the Colts, and we're about to pick up a left tackle at 22. I think Detroit should trade back and get more picks, but if they stay at 12 they should pick up the highest rated DB available.

I keep hearing Nick Fairley for the Lions...interesting, to say the least. Don't really want him but our D-Line would be set for years. Should be very interesting come 8 o'clock.

I am just pissed that Oakland doesn't have a pick in the first round - it's always funny to watch them take whoever runs the fastest 40 regardless of need or skill level
