OT: Tuesday night NHL open thread

Bruins at Montreal trying to put them away right now.

Philly and Buffalo Game 7 at 7:30

Chicago at Vancouver Game 7 is the late game.

Bruins and Canadiens underway now. Montreal robbed of a goal when the ref lost sight and blew the play dead with the puck sitting in the crease.

My girlfriend has a lot of Canadians from Vancouver on her softball team. I'm hoping the Hawks can win tonight, both for the tears of unfathomable sadness and because they are the inferior team; I'd rather the Wings play the Hawks than the Canucks.

Question for Wings fans. Who are you pulling for in Vancouver tonight? I'd like to get a hold of Nashville personally. No 10:30 starts and it gives the Sharks and Blackhawks a potential 7 games to beat the hell out of each other.

A Vancouver win means they will play Nashville and the Wings and Sharks will play. A Hawks win tonight and they will play San Jose while Detroit and Nashville will play in round two. The East is a giant clusterf-ck. The Caps are the only team to advance and can end up playing Buffalo, Montreal, Pittsburg, or Tampa Bay. The only teams they can't play in the next round are the Flyers or Bruins.

Not actually to concerned with who wins tonights. I would probably prefer Chicago but I'm very happy these two have pushed to game 7. I want them worn out when they clash with a healthy, well rest Red Wings team. Two game 7s in one night. You cannot get a better night of sports than that.

I've heard just about every Red Wing fan I know say they're pulling for the Hawks because they don't want to play the Canucks (if it comes to that). However I fear a potential matchup with the Hawks just as much as the Canucks. Hawks have had our number all year long, and if they do win tonight, they will have tons of confidence and momentum.

That said, I think in the short-term view, a Hawks win is good because Nashville is slightly less intimidating than San Jose.

Given the competing interests there, I'm kind of torn.

I couldn't agree more. A matchup against either the sharks or the preds would be tough, but if they play the preds not having to go all the way out to the west coast is a plus. And games don't start so late that I am too tired to wake up for work in the morning.

Wings fans who have ESPN insider (if you subscribe to ESPN the mag, you have Insider too!), check this article out: http://insider.espn.go.com/nhl/playoffs/2011/insider/news/story?id=6431832. Great write up on how Pavel deserves to be mentioned up there with Crosby and Ovechkin. Here's a sample:

Also, who to root for in the Nucks-Hawks series... Root for the Hawks, so that we face the Preds (as opposed to the Sharks) round one? or root for the Nucks because fuck the Hawks? It's a quandary.

Lastly, your NHL wolverines involved in games tonight (courtesy of mgoblue.com):

 • Mike Cammalleri is looking to help les Habs even out their series with Boston at 3-3.
 • Max Pacioretty is still out with a hit from Chara during the regular season
 • Steve Kampfer is still out of the Boston lineup
 • Jeff Tambellini and Marty Turco have not seen the ice in the Vancouver-Chicago series

That's a tough one, but I'm going with the Hawks. The Wings, assuming Mule and Z are back for round 2 (and there's every indication they will be), will be as healthy as they've ever been in the playoffs. Barring a rash of injuries, I gotta believe that the Wings would be able to wear the Hawks down pretty handily in the conference final. Despite blowing the 3-0 lead, for some reason, I just don't want any part of having to face Vancouver this time around.

Spacek just got wrecked. Ouch. What was Lucic thinking?

EDIT: And Lucic gets 5 and a game. Not shocking considering the hit and the result.

Worst way to end a period. Now Buffalo heads into the locker room deflated, and Philly has all the momentum. A goal that late in a period is really one of the worst kind of goals to give up because it will have a mental impact on both teams, good for one bad for the other. Each team will sit during intermission with that play lingering in their minds.

Buffalo should feel bad anyways, they got dominated. If it wasn't for Miller the game would be out of reach already.

Cammalleri scored in the first for the Habs for those interested in UM alums.

The Sabres were facing an uphill battle before they got hammered by injuries. It sucks to see a former Sabre like Briere light them up, though. The Sabres are the farm team for the rest of the league - young guys develop into quality players while they are with the Sabres, but the Sabres can never afford to keep them. Such is life for a small market team, I guess.

I fiercely want Chicago to win. If you have a choice between San Jose and Nashville, I pick Nashville all day long.

Reasoning:

1. Nashville is without Martin Erat right now, who is probably their most gifted offensive player (not sure on his return).

2. Nashville is shorter travel

3. Nashville struggles to score goals and is the worst offensive team in this years playoffs

4. San Jose has some real stars on their team, as well as playoff stars (Pavelski, Thornton, Marleau, Heatley, Boyle, Couture).

5. Detroit would have home ice if it goes down to a game 7.

6. Vancouver would be eliminated and they are the most dangerous team in the NHL this year, by far.

7. I think Chicago and San Jose would be a war which would help Detroit if (when) they get passed Nashville.

Because we are going to repeat baby! Will be just the 4th team to ever comeback from down 3, a 8 over 1 and all against LOOOOOOO and the Canucks. I love it. Finish them off tonight!!!

Vancouver looks like they want this one bad. Came out blazing. And the crowd wants it bad too.

Allegiances aside, the next couple nights are the reason why playoff hockey is the best.

That nearly killed me. At least we get another crack at them in Boston! Camms is the bomb, when we get Patches back and Pateryn up with the big boys in a couple of years it will be looking good (rumour here is they might get him to go to Hamilton, but they respect Red a lot and might leave him be).

Man do I hate the Canucks. Hope our local boy Crawford can get it done, he is something.

'Allez les bleus'...sentiment appreciated but we think people from France are generally wankers. And we wear red mainly.

And I want Chi to win. Home ice, rather play nashville, love to see the president trophy winners ousted in the first round. Although Nashville played well at the end of the season and had a good series we match up against them better.

Games 1-3 john scott is not in the lineup for the blackhawks, the canucks staple the hawks to the boards and win all 3 games. Games 4-6 scott is in the lineup and that one physical presence on the ice keeps vancouver from any kind of hitting, hawks win all 3 games. After looking at that, why would joel quinville scratch him for game 7? The canucks are playing physical and there is no one that the blackhawks can put out there to hit back. Right now it is the deciding factor in this game.

Because Bolland not Scott has been the difference last three games. Frolik is an amazingly ineffective player though, could scratch him for Scott.

Wing fans you should not be worried about getting 4 cracks in 7 to beat Luongo. Good kid from Montreal North but man he has no intestinal fortitude as they say. Never mind the Olympics. But you'll cakewalk Nashville.

Luongo has been shaky at the end of the game. Pepper him with shots to get some loose pucks out in front. Crawford is having an AMAZING game though to give us a hope.

Stanley Cup Playoff hockey is fucking AWESOME.

Chicago, down 3-0 to the President's Trophy winner claws their way back, looking down and out in game 7.... forces OT. Next goal wins the series. You can't make stuff up this good!

I think of all the major sports, hockey is the one I love to watch the most when my team (GO WINGS!) is not playing.

But on the bright side, the Hawks lost.

After they won last year, and all their fans on here said "no, the salary cap won't matter...we're young, and going to repeat"...well, yeah...at least we have that going for us.

Defense got to be able to clear out the puck ncoukdnt dump it or skate it out of the zone and it's going to cost you eventually. Burrows made great play to knock that down though to set up the winner. Well, good luck with SJ. We'll se ya next year.
