He said Ohio State may have to make up the difference by dipping into the money the Buckeyes made from their appearance in the Sugar Bowl.

Sometimes people get confused about the definition of karma. That is karma.

I'd love to hear what Jim Delany would say about them returning the bowl money.

I heard part of that radio interview he did in December and I believe "proud" was the word he used to refer to all those players starting the game. He and Gene Smith found that loophole in the rules for them to play in that game. There's no loophole to fall back on now.

My biggest concern out of all of this is:

The longer this plays out, the more opportunity OSU has to show that Tressel wasn't all he was cracked up to be and slowly turn on him, with lots of propaganda. The fan base and recruits will also, slowly, realize the same thing and turn on him. Then, when it comes to hire a new coach, it will be viewed as a big step in a POSITIVE direction and then nothing will be different. Sure they may have scholarships cut, but it remains to be seen how much that really will affect a powerhouse team a la USC.

Don't get me wrong, I want Tressel out, but it's not about me. It's about the perception of OSU in the eyes of recruits, mostly, and if OSU slowly turns on Tressel then makes a big hire, the recruits will continue to flock (unless Hoke is a world beater and sucks up all the big recruits in the midwest, Ohio included).

As much as I hate Ohio State and sweatervest / wine cooler guy, there's still part of me that just wants to beat him at his own game. You know, give 'em the ol' John Cooper special.

As much as I want to see him gone, it would also suck for him to leave with a 9-1 mark against Michigan.

Unless, of course, he takes OSU football program with him to some degree but let's be honest: the NCAA enforcement as of late has been more bark then bite.

I read an article similar to this one on ESPN and Gene Smith seems to be turning on Tressel a little bit. It will be interesting to say the least to see how this all plays out but in the end I think Tressel will have to be fired. There is a reason every coach that is found guilty of these infractions gets canned. This will be no exception.

Ultimately, it's going to come down to Gene Smith or Tressel keeping their job and you have to figure that Smith sees that he will need to distance himself from the vest. When the NCAA vacates last season, takes away the bowl and starts looking at broader institutional penalties Smith knows the crap will rain down on him. If he can paint Tressel as the corrupt architect then he likely perceives a better chance of survival.

I'm enjoying every minute of these events.

That bastard isn't going anywhere, there is no justice in college football. These expenses will be covered by their Rose Bowl winnings this season. Bastards

The only sure good thing that I can take from this whole ordeal is how all my friends from Ohio have turned from ends-of-the-earth Tressel followers, into Garth from Anchorman:

Is it everyone's presumption that Jim Tressel is the sole proximate cause of this investigation? Because I don't think that Coach Tressel has any tattoos, and I don't think any collectors are buying any Jim Tressel jerseys. (What's his number, anyway?)

I expect that the $250k is burned through in about, oh, 90 days. And that's only the bill from The Compliance Group. Not including attorney time for OSU's general counsel, and -- significantly -- how much Tressel might be paying his own counsel.

Anyway, these investigations burn through money like fall leaves. Ours did. I think Doc Saturday was being really snarky in this post on his blog.

I agree that the internal investigators probably cost an insane amount regardless. However, OSU is in this position because Tressel lied to save a title run in 2010. If he just reported everything, the players would have been suspended and nothing else would have happened. He screwed up bad...

Seeing as how the point of the fine was to punish Tressel rather than make the school whole, I don't see how this is relevant.

It's not as if all that money is gong into Tressel's pocket or something.

If the fine had been greater, would that really somehow justify all the money they're spending on the investigation?

Really, the best part is how Smith had to force Tressel to apologize. Tressel wasn't even sorry he cheated. The NCAA should take that remorseless cheater thing and run with it. Slam the program and show cause Tressel.

And investigate into past players getting hit with violations similar to this. I wouldn't be surprised if it went back to the national title season. Strip it alllllllllllllll away.
