It said that he has some concerning "habits" and that his poise in the pocket needs refining.

However, it also basically said that he has the best arm of the four.  I would not be surprised to see him as the first QB drafted.

I would be VERY surprised if Mallett was the first QB taken. Because the Panthers are taking a QB  at 1, and the Bills are taking a QB at 3, and neither will be taking Mallett.

Not really.  I think people underestimate Jeff George's abilities because he failed to live up to his billing, but he was a better NFL quarterback than Ryan Leaf.  If Jeff George had been picked in the 2nd or 3rd round, people would say, "Eh, yeah, that was an okay pick.  Whatever."  If Ryan Leaf were picked in the 2nd or 3rd round, people would still say, "Jeez, that guy sucked."

There are A LOT of quarterbacks who are/have been better than Ryan Leaf.  The only reason Leaf was such a huge bust is because he was such a high pick.  If Mallett drops lower, then the term "bust" doesn't really factor into the equation.  And if he matures at some point, rather than being a "bust", he could be an absolute steal.

Maybe this seems like roses and gumdrops to you, but seemed like a slam to me:

“I would never take him. Never. He’s irresponsible, selfish and not a leader,” the AFC GM said. “I don’t care how great he throws it – and he throws it great – but there’s no way.”

That's pretty much my assessment, too.  If I'm an NFL team, I'm not going to take him...with a high draft pick.  I might pick him in the fourth round or later.  He's not going to hang around that long because some team is going to draft him for his ability to throw the ball, but IF he were to still be on the board late in the draft, he would be worth the gamble.  If you have to cut him because of his attitude/leadership, then it's not much of a hit monetarily and you didn't waste a high pick where you're likely to get some real talent.

As you said, he won't go anywhere near the 4th. Same thing every year, a guy gets slammed for reason X and everyone predicts he'll fall. But when draft day comes teams will be thinking about his rocket arm and say "oh, crap, we don't have a QB"...and he will come off the board prior to the 2nd round ending at the latest. It only takes one team to want to take the risk, and someone is always willing to gamble on a QB with a huge arm.

Even if Lloyd didn't retire he was gone the next year.  Players didn't respect him and he always thought he was bigger than the team.  Someone  will take him in the 6th round and he could be an opening day starter somewhere if he ever pulls it all together.

Is the poster child for a player that should have returned...he is the opposite of Andrew Luck.  One more year would have solidified his position.  I would not be surprised if he dropped out of the first round.

Remember when Aaron Rodgers plummeted in the draft because his arm wasn't strong enough? Teams who draft because of 'OMG arm strength!' are moronic, and probably don't have a staff like New England's or Green Bay's who can properly develop a QB.

By the way, I feel like it's going to be a pretty weak NFL Draft this year.  Maybe it's just me, but I don't see a lot of future stars coming out of college this year.  There are a few good players (Patrick Peterson, Julio Jones, etc.), but if I were a GM in the second half of the 1st round, I would be trying to trade down.  I would not want to pay first round money to the guys that will be there around #20 or later.

This is exactly why there needs to be a rookie salary cap. These guys are unproven and step into the league with contracts they will never live up to. Also the guy in this thread that thinks Mallet will make 40-50 million is out of his mind. He will be lucky to go in the 2nd round and even then that is a reach in my opinion.

I will be surprised if he slips past the middle of the 2nd round. I don't disagree with any of the negative analysis, some team won't be able to pass on "the arm of god" early in the 2nd or late in the 1st round.

Poor fellow ... his fragile psyche was obviously damaged by a few days of exposure to an anti-Family-Values environment, and then that vulgar hillbilly coach ran him out of town.  It's almost like the Simpsons flashback when Barney remembers his first drink.
