Michigan Lacrosse Wins 21-0

Submitted by weasel3216 on

Michigan lacrosse beat UC-Santa Barbara tonight 21-0.  UC-SB is a decent team and Michigan dominated them from start to finish.  Michigan had a huge advantage in shots on goal (53 compared to 16) and faceoffs improved greatly winning 16 of 25.

This win puts Michigan 9-0 on the season and with next weekend being the biggest two games of the season as Michigan plays Colorado State (#3) and Arizona State (#2).

Was ucsb at full strength? This is the type of domination I would expect if 10 players were suspended. Ucsb played sparty to a one goal game and was ranked in the top ten, so they are a talented team.

UCSB was at full strength.  Michigan wasn't.  First line middie Doug Bryant, who scored three goals last week against BYU, was out.  So was their top d middie, Sean Sutton.  This was complete domination.  Michigan just looked way more athletic and fast and physical and talented.

Great to see Dave Brandon there.  I got to meet him and chat for a second.  He was with his wife and some parents of lacrosse players who he seemed to know pretty well.

To give this a little perspective, I was on the 2004 squad and we played UCSB at home.  We won a gritty 4-3 contest but UCSB went on to win the championship that year with only the 1 loss.  They are typically a very dangerous opponent, so to thrash them 21-0 really shows how far the Michigan squad has come.

The plan is to add women's lacrosse along with the men.  The athletic department is in final fundraising mode.  If they get the $ they need, expect an announcement in the next few weeks.  Varsity lacrosse will start fall of 2012 if they announce this spring.  It's no coincidence the AD is attending and tweeting about club games.  He's all in.

In case you missed it, MGoBlog's Tim has a lacrosse blog now.  He has a write-up on the game last night, along with a lot of other stuff.  Thanks, and keep it up Tim!
