I apologize for taking the heat off of Kiffin. I regret that we will have to vacate our wins from 2010 for using so many ineligible. players. I have made a career out of lying and cheating right back to Youngstown State but I thought I had insulated myself and the institution from such accusations. I will try to be more effective in all future dishonesty during the NCAA investigation.

Well the 2010 victories are so far gone that I can't believe they didn't just vacate them at the press conference. Everywhere else that has been caught using ineligible players in a season has had to give up those wins, I don't see this being any different.
Tressel is also probably a goner. The only time a coach has been found guilty of a 10.1 violation and not been effectively fired by the NCAA (show-cause) was Herron, and that's only because he wasn't even a coach any more.
I think if you look at USC, look at the Fab Five and what's probably about to happen to Bruce Pearl those are pretty reasonable expectations.
The NCAA isn't going to fire Jim Tressel, and you bet your ass Ohio State isn't going to cut off their nose to spite their face.
Anything short of Tressel being videotaped handing cash over to a player, tsio is sticking with their man who has owned Michigan because when you get right down to it, isn't that all that matters in Ohio?
They've fired everyone else for the exact same thing (lying to the NCAA). They have the emails, they have his signature on the compliance form. This might be the most black and white 10.1 case in history.
Technically speaking, the NCAA doesn't do the firing. They may have a iron clad case (which appears to be the case) but ultimately it's up to the university to pull the trigge. Remember, this is OSU we're talking about. They just suspended the guy for two meaningless games despite having all the evidence that the Vest flat out lied.
No, they technically don't. But they do say "if you want to keep employing this person you'll be subject to a review process, at the end of which we can find that you can't employ him."
A show-cause is a firing, essentially, no school has ever even gone through the COI review to try to employ someone with that penalty.

I'm inclined to agree that tUofOSU will face some serious repurcussions here. The USC decision has to influence the NCAA's thinking and thigns will definitely be compounded by the recent media surrounding Cam Newton/family and the Ohio State/Arkansas eligibility. Certainly, the NCAA does not like being embarrassed and/or lied to and Tressel signed the document in September 2010 that indicated he was not aware of any violations.
Ohio State fans have every reason to feel nervous that the NCAA will look at a pattern.

Let's be clear that the violations that "allegedly" occurred regarding Hawk, Gonzales and Holmes were "after the fact" and the tUofOSU used their policy of deny deny deny effectively (as opposed to Michigan's practicegate response). That said, the climate is very different post USC, post Cam Newton's pass and post the tUofOSU five's free pass into the bowl game. I am certain that the NCAA can't be happy to have been embarassed and had the wool pulled over their eyes by Tressel, Ohio State and Delaney.
End of the day, Tressel signed the smoking gun when he indicated on the compliance form that he was not aware of any violations. Follow that up with the embarrassing performance from Tressel and Gee (and corresponding media firestorm) one can reasonably expect a couple years (minimum) of USC like sanctions.
Hard to say if Tressel's coaching tenure survives the vacated season, scholarship limits and post season ban.

1. Tressel is clearly not sorry what he did. Is it just me, or does he sound exactly like a politician who gets caught doing something wrong and has to make an apology. It's never a real apology, just a back handed slap at everyone couched in the form of an "apology". Same thing at the press conference last week. He never once owned up to what he did.
2. JT is a legend in his own mind. Let's start with the self-congratulating he did at the press conference last week, talking about hospital visits, playing for sympathy regarding former players being murdered, and god knows what else before getting to the point of acknowledging that something or other happened. If we didn’t read the press releases and the emails, we would still not know what "it" was that happened b/c JT sure wasn't going to tell us. And let's be honest here. As a Christian, JT knows that pride is not acceptable, yet here he was telling us that after he lied, deceived, and covered up, his inflated self-image was in tact ("I don' think less of myself"). Where is the humility? I can imagine the conversations where the AD told him he needed to have a press conference and arrogant Jim was saying "why, I did nothing wrong!” I really wonder if much of the charity work he does is not for the sake of charity itself, but for the congratulations he gets. When no one is looking, does he do the same types of things?
3. I cannot see this ending well for OSU. Anyone who suggests that the current self-imposed penalty is close to enough is failing the common sense test. If a two game suspension and fine are enough, tell me, what school faced with a similar situation wouldn't do EXACTLY the same thing as OSU? The penalty is worth it then. If playing players you know to be ineligible is rewarded with a two game ban the following season against inferior competition, you'll see plenty of schools lining up for similar "punishment" in the future. It just amounts to a cost of doing business then. I'll take my minor lumps next year in order to have a shot at winning this year. Seriously, this is a middle finger to the NCAA and OSU is just goading them into kicking the teeth out of the program. No vacating of victories? Less of a suspension for the coach than the players? No scholarship reductions? This is less of a penalty than Michigan took for not understanding practice rules and OSU thinks it will stick? With all of the secondary violations and near misses in recent years, OSU should be terrified of an in-depth NCAA investigation, yet they seem to be begging for one. Are they this arrogant, or do they think they have a “get out of jail free” card from the NCAA?

This is the attitude of someone in complete denial. In his mind, he did nothing wrong. He feels the need to say something to the fans, so he comes out with this lame "sorry about what happened" as if this magically just happened and he had no role in it. Stunning. Arrogance.
And OSU fans will eat that all up and completely accept the "apology," as proof of what a moral man he is.
I read the entire article, and couldn't find the apology.
He said "I sincerely apologize for what we've been through." The word apologize is in the sentence so it must be an apology. Similar "apologies": sorry you are such a bitch, I'm really sorry I tried to do the right thing and you just can't see it.

This is all just so stupid. It's as if OSU went to a PR agency and decided to do exactly the opposite of what they said. The NCAA, an organization run by politicians if ever there was one, will not be mollified by a non-apology, nor will the be amused.
I mean think about this for a second. Tressel knew he had to say something to these fans. He spent actual mental energy trying to figure out the best way to pretend to apologize without really apologizing. That's absolute proof that he thinks he did nothing wrong. I honestly think, based on his actions of late, that we get deep insight into the man's soul. He's a man who is completely full of himself, a man who thinks following the rules is optional. I'm more hopeful than ever that OSU is going to get crushed.
If they forfeit the Sugar Bowl, what happens to the purse from the bowl? Where would those funds go? Back to the NCAA or Sugar Bowl Committee? I hope he (Sweatervest) stays! I'd prefer to kick their arse and then he can leave!

I really don't think that much will happen to them. The NCAA is a suck up when it comes to OSU. I may think that Tressel wanted to cover it up with some of Pryors money and give it to the NCAA. If at most the NCAA would make it a three game just to say ya they did it wrong we are going to change it.
