OT- Huge fricking earthquake and tsunami

Submitted by BiSB on

In case you hadn't heard, an 8.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the northern coast of Honshu, the main island in Japan, this morning.  It triggered a tsunami that is heading east across the Pacific, and has apparently already struck Hawaii (they had a lot of warning, so loss of life should be minimal). It also swept much of the Japanese coastline well inland of the coast.

Hundreds are already reported dead, and severe damage was reported as far away as Tokyo.  I think I speak for the entire MGoCommunity when I say that our thoughts and prayers are with those in Japan.

ahh...the classic "I'm not                BUT                ."  Like the "I'm not racist BUT I'm about to make a racist comment."

You are an idiot.  Imagine a loved one of yours dying in a car crash, and someone saying "that's entertaining."  Or, if it's easier, just imagine someone saying that about 9-11.  Grow the fuck up dude.

Whatever, dude.  I hope that every time you see video and news rolling in from Japan, you remember that idiotic comment you made.  You can defend it all you want to me or the others on here, but you can't lie to yourself man.

My sister and her family have been in Japan for the last 5 months.  She was calling around this morning to tell us they were OK.  My brother in law was in Tokyo for work but she and the kids were about 3 hours away and didn't feel much.  He said that he was on the third floor of an office building and it shook the building so hard it knocked plaster off of the walls.  Pretty scary.

Terrible news to wake up to this morning. Said on CNN earlier that there are small outlying islands around the northern Japanese coast that might simply be washed away from the tsunami.

Thankfully, it sounds as if the tsunami is dissipating as it crosses the Pacific. Reports from Hawaii are minimal waves coming in.

When I turned on the TV this mrning, I saw the actual footage of the Tsunami hiiting the coast, but I THOUGHT it was a CGI of what the experts thought MIGHT happen to the coast.  It just looked too fake to be real.  So I was shocked when the announcer said, "these images are from earlier today."

Crazy and very sad stuff

Just looks terifying.  Wife has family in Japan, but apparently they are fine.  I know this probably is little consolation to those who were already hit, but it looks like this Tsunami won't be nearly as destructive as it could have been.

My former high school band director lives in Japan on a US base. He is fine, but lets keep everyone in Japan, Hawaii' and costal California in your thoughts today. The devestation so far in Japan has been catastrophic.

The radio saying "earthquake and tsunami" without hearing where it was and nearly hypervenilated.  My wife is in India right now and given where the last disaster of this type happened, I damn near had a panic attack.

Video and photos of this are pretty scary.

mother nature can be the biggest bitch. Could you imagine just living your life, you have a family, career, things are happening...and all of a sudden a natural disaster just wipes it out. I feel terrible for anyone who has to go through stuff like this,

I'm vacationing in Tokyo right now and it's been a crazy day. The original earthquake shook the ground violently here for a few minutes, and we've experienced powerful aftershocks regularly over the last 9 hours. I didn't have internet or TV access until about an hour ago, so I'm just now learning about the devistation near the epicenter. My thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this tragedy.

Terrible news from over there this morning. I just saw a report on NBC I believe that said our west coast could rise more than just a couple feet but it's not supposed to be too terrible. I believe I saw that at least one of our nuclear plants will be shut down today. Kind of puts a damper on what should have been a great day of basketball and an hockey....to think of all those young, innocent lives either lost or tragically altered forever by one night....watching those videos and the news coverage gives me a sick feeling in my stomach.

Just saw that Oregon is expecting 6-8 foot waves. California is expecting 6-7 foot waves.

My fiancee's family lives in Honolulu, and we heard from them this morning - civil defense hasn't sounded the all clear, but the worst waves are thought to be over and there aren't any reports of major damage anywhere.
