Mike & Mike summery on tOSU with Joe Schad/Bob Knight/Chris Spielman
Yet another thread but here is MY summery on M&M.
M&M
-they think it's shady that JT didn't know where to go with info
-Golic says you go to the AD w/ this info. (DUH!)
-Greeny takes no stand and can't do 6 degrees of separation to the J-E-T-S so he has no clue.
-Polarizing E-mails on read on show pro tOSU anti tOSU from fans and Alums
-Made fun of President Gee for saying "Hope JT doesn't fire me."
-think JT is going to get it by NCAA
Joe Schad
-OSU hopes 2 games is all they get but suspect NCAA will try 10.1 (comply/monitor/promote) and vacate 2010
-Tennessee will be the benchmark, B1G will not suspend JT as SEC did Tenn B-Ball coach. B1G will let NCAA handle it. NCAA will also try to add 4 CONF games to list.
-Does not know if self imposed sanction include spring/fall practices
-Obviously OSU will not fire JT like Texas Tech and Kansas did with their coaches due to breach of contract.
Bob Knight
-His secretary would of vetted all E-mails and screened before got to him.
-Believes JT does it the right way and would send his son to play for him.
-Something like this has never happened to him but if it did he would bring the kid in immediately and say "Are you doing this?" then he would go to compliance department to follow on penalties.
-If he could make a stronger defense for JT he would.
Chris Spielman
-Thinks JT first reaction was a parent approach and tried to protect kids first then found he made a bad choice.
-Would of said if he was JT "I made a mistake and take full responsibility and will add more games and more money to the ones the university has imposed."
-Thinks the NCAA should come down hard after the Tat5 bowl game and thinks they should not have played in bowl game.
-Lesson that should be learned is "Take responsibility"
-Agrees with Bob Knight that he would let his 14 year old play for JT.
Sorry for spelling and grammar and these are the cliff notes by me so take it for what you will.
My favorite part of the interview last night was when he was asked about why he continued to let the kids play after hearing about this stuff and Jim tressel seemed to age 10 years on stage and started shitting his pants...
Of course they'd let their kids play for him, who wouldn't want their kids to get a well paying job?
I hope the NCAA follows the rabbit trail and it dredges up confirmation of all the rumors and suspicions we've heard since 2001. Even if they didn't lose scholarships, I'd be satisfied with them having to vacate all the wins since Clarett was there, including that NC.
The self-imposed sanctions include Tressel being barred from taking part in spring practice and summer workouts.
According to the Twitters, OSU clarified last night that that report was an error, and that Tressel would be participating in spring/summer football activities.
I thought that being banned from spring practice was a bigger punishment than not being able to coach the first two games (both against MAC opponents, I think).
Now that's just thumbing your nose at the rules.
Dave Brandon must be sitting in his office, feet up on his desk, smoking a big fat cigar and laughing hysterically at this situation.
"Life's a bitch aint it, O$U?"
He'd give them a bunch of free stuff and their dumb ass kids wouldn't need to get an education and could be commentators.
Bob Knight is just pissed that a B10 team booted him out.
If Bob Knight is pissed off at the B10, then why would he come to the defense of the most successful B10 coach not named Joe Paterno? Wouldn't he say this proves the conference isn't as pure and holy as it lets on?
Isn't because Indiana fired him. He is an OSU alum for that matter, so he it would make sense for him to support JT. That being said, I think Knight is one of the few people that say what's on his mind and isn't just feeding the machine or saying what he thinks wants to be heard. I respect Knight a lot, and actually don't mind what he said here.
Look, what JT did might hurt the program, but he has never shown that he is going to hurt one of his own players. People might not like it, but in regards to how he treats his team and people, he seems to be a pretty good guy. I'm not saying he isn't a cheater (a little contridiction, I know), but I do think he runs OSU as a father figure to many of these players. If I had kids I wouldn't want them to play for JT, but that's only because he coaches OSU, not because of the way he treats his players.
The more I hear the guy the more I like him. He's excellent on game calls, and he has demonstrated the ability to be rational regarding his alma matter and generally shows class to M.
I presume you also know the story of him and Bo, and how bad he wanted to come here but his dad and the state of Ohio totally shut it down.
My first thought last night was there going to blame some temp secretary and move on followed by the public stoning of said secretary. Bob Knight also gave this way out when he said his secretary would vet all calls and E-mails so at least they didn't try to pass the buck that way.
Since we are just starting the 2011 recruiting season, how much of an impact does everyone think that this will have on some of our expected recruiting battles for the bumper crop of 4-5* recruits expected to come out of the midwest this year. Many of our higher profile targets have or are expected to receive OSU offers, which many of us took to mean that our chances of landing said recruit dropped heavily. Does this change things?
I don't think that recruits care much about this kind of stuff. USC's highly-ranked class of 2011 seems to support this.
Sure for the local kids where Ohio State is their biggest big time option, that might hold. This will surely harm them going toe to toe for the big timers, even from their area. It will definitely encourage more big schools to come in and make pitches to kids they might have figured they had no chance with.
USC is one of a kind too. It offers so many things as far as weather, city, and atmosphere that make it an easier sell to recruits. I see where you are coming from but I wouldn't assume this won't effect things in a big way.
There are too many variables to give an adequate answer to your explanation, but finding Tressel guilty of major NCAA violations with an ongoing investigation, coupled with the suspensions and bad publicity we've already seen earlier in the year, can't be the most helpful thing for OSU recruiting since loaned dealership cars.
I think this is how Bobby Knight's secretary would look vetting his e-mails:
She should be cowering behind the desk as if someone is screaming at her.
...erased 18.5 minutes of the tape you were interested in, Mr. NCAA compliance official."
feels more like spring here
I knew last night that press conference wouldn't pass the smell test with the national media. Those emails rip the foundation out from under their entire defense/explanation. Interesting Knight and Spielman both say they'd send their sons to work, I mean play for him. Must be in the PR kit they handed out to supporters.
Bob Knight had his staff vet everything that was sent to him at Texas Tech. Folks who worked at the library (which BK did support by asking ath department donors to make matching donations) were told that he could NOT be communicated with directly.
Dude was more in an ivory tower than any professor.....
I think Knight and especially Spielman had good takes. This really shouldn't have gotten to Tressel's level without someone else noticing first (when I worked for a university, big-wigs always had their e-mails vetted by at least 1 layer, if not more). At the same time, once he saw it Tressel definitely should have forwarded the e-mail to the proper GC at the school.
And I like Spielman calling for more penalties. While I am sure this happens at other places, especially in football-mad states like Ohio and most of the South, OSU needs to take it on the chin and accept responsibility. I suspect 2010 will be erased and I wouldn't be surprised if Pryor and Co. are suspended for the year as well. But at the same time, I also want the NCAA to investigate all of the other bad dealings we've seen over the years and really come down on them with the same level of enforcement as I suspect OSU will receive. So that means Tenn, Auburn, etc. need to feel it as well.
Not sure if anyone caught Colin this morning as well, but I was loving his take. Mike and Mike and their guests seemed to be more supportive of "that school", but Colin was really bashing them.
Basically said this is not about tatoos and merchandise, but something much bigger. Compared it to a CEO knowing about wrongdoing in his company and lying to the government about it. Said it was basically a situation like this that brought down ENRON. He really ripped on Tressel for his press confrence as well and said "He did not do himself any favors". Also stated these are not minor violations...this is "Major" and they/he should be punished. Stated he is never in favor of calling for anyones head and he is not here, but 2 suspending for two games and a minor fine is a joke in this instance.
Like Colin or not, I LOVED him this morning!
Just had Bob Davie on and Davie is saying there gonna get hit ala USC/Miami.
