By far, the best thing BTN does is The Journey. If you haven't already, go and watch the B1G Tournament episodes. The episode about the Michigan State game has some excellent shots. There was a comment about how the shot of Izzo walking out of the tunnel was reminsicent of Darth Vader. So that got the wheels turning...

I couldn't leave out the good guys. Turns out the music from the end of Episode IV syncs up pretty well with the end of the game celebration (complete with Chewie roar).

Spoiler WARNING. For anyone who wants to discuss TLJ feel free to include any spolier info you want. Here are my thoughts.

Best Parts:

  • throne room fight
  • Poe tooling with Hux
  • Luke with Leia toward the end
  • R2 convincing Luke to come back
  • Yoda
  • Holdo with the Hyperspace kamikazi move - beaurty of a sceen
  • Rey vs Luke in the rain
  • the flashbacks
  • DJ the slicer

Parts that I thought weren't so good:

  • Super Leia (could have killed her 2-3 ways that would have been fine)
  • Maz from star tours (can't have her on the ship with the resistance? Have her point Finn et al to Lando maybe?)
  • BB-8 piloting an AT-ST
  • Luke milking that thing - I guess it really sets up his character status but that was just weird
  • some of the canto bight stuff went long so it didn't bother me really

I thought it was some amazing screenplay and story telling- every main character had a legit moment of "are they doing the right thing"? Even the secondary characters like Adml Holdo- you didn't know where she was going. Lots of questions answered. Lots of ways to go in the next one. Overall, this was the movie to move the SW story forward and not keep looking backward. Who knows what EpIX will be.

Who do you like?

I like Team Empire:

-Pax Vader insures prosperity & peace

-Minimal government interference on empire planets

-Defense against any threat

-Stormtroopers are badass & obey orders

-Rebel uniforms suck

-Rebel planets will fight each other if the Empire is defeated

Since the board has been slow lately, there are a lot of Star Wars fans on this blog, and Rogue One is now out, I thought some might find this interesting.

Rogue One was written and produced by John Knoll. John Knoll is an alum of Ann Arbor Huron High and son of Glenn Knoll, the former chair of the University of Michigan's Nuclear Engineering department. John is a visual effects expert and in addition to writing and producing Rogue One he was head of the film's visual effects team. John has also been involved with the visual effects of other Star Wars films. (As a side note : John, along with his brother Tom - a Michigan grad, is also known for developing Photoshop!)

Lawrence Kasdan was a screen writer for The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Force Awakens. Lawrence is a Michigan grad and is also know for having written and directed The Big Chill.

And of course Darth Vader is voiced by Michigan alum James Earl Jones.

Any others that I've missed?

Its been a family tradition for the last few years to go to the movies after Christmas dinner. This year we went to see Rogue One and sat in the D-Box seats (seats move and vibrate in snyc with the action on the screen). Thoroughly enjoyed the movie and the visual effects were outstanding!

For those that have not seen Rogue One yet, no spoilers please!

Saw the movie last night. I love that it had this adult, tragic, somber, yet hopeful ending. Vader's appearance in the movie is brief, but it's the biggest badass scene he's ever been in. Also, the CGI they use to make Tarkin and Leia look and sound exactly like they did in Episode IV was kinda mind blowing. Why can't they make new Star Wars movies by just CGIing the original Han, Luke, and Leia into new movies? Anyways, two thumbs up.

Here's the new Star Wars stand alone film trailer. I know there is the thread downstream, but this one actually contains the trailer.

Personally, I love the originals, think the prequals are average with potential but poorly executed, and really, really enjoyed The Force Awakens (yes, it has similarities to A New Hope, it's also damn entertaining with great, original characters, which I think the haters disregard because nothing can live up to their expectations of the thrill of the originals).

Anyway, I'm excited about this one too. Looks a little more gritty and dark, which in and of itself does not make it good, but I like that it feels a bit more grounded in an individuals story rather than the massive story arc that is the series. It also has some samurai stuff going on there, like actual samurai stuff, not light sabers, which I'm completely on board with. Felicity Jones, Mads Mikelsen (!), Forest Whitaker (!), Donnie Yen, just a great international cast.

A long time ago, in a thread very, very off-topic:

I just got back from seeing The Force Awakens. It was fantastic, absolutely wonderful. JJ Abrams is to Star Wars what Jim Harbaugh is to Michigan. It's entirely possible that Jim Hackett helped assemble the cast and crew for the film.

We're going to discuss the movie, with spoilers. If you haven't seen it, turn away immediately and go watch it so that you can get the full experience.

What did you think? How could George Lucas make such abominable prequels when someone is capable of making something as amazing as The Force Awakens?

May the force be with Blue.

Not Nate Silver and just some fun polling data on Star Wars stuff for those of us from a certain generation (along with guys 1 generation after) via Five Thirty Eight.

Like the writer, I was taken back by the relative low % of people who have seen 'A New Hope' (kids these days! get off my lawn!).  As is generally accepted 'The Empire Strikes Back' is seen as the best movie

The favorable unfavorable ratings were fun, and not shockingly Jar Jar Binks took the bottom slot. The Washington Post jumped on this and noted Darth Vader had better favorables than any 2016 presidential candidate.  Funny comment

None of the 2016 hopefuls is polling higher than Darth Vader. You'll recall that Vader chopped off his son's arm and blew up an entire planet, but evidently in the eyes of the American public these are minor sins compared to Benghazi, Bridgegate and Gov. Rick Perry's hipster glasses. These numbers suggest that if "Star Wars" were real and Darth Vader decided to enter the 2016 presidential race, he'd be the immediate front-runner.

As a Boba Fett fan I was shocked at his low rating....but still a front runner if he ran for Prez.

And last but not least there was a "Who Shot First? - Han or Greedo" question.  A point of contention.

Of course Colbert also had a funny riff on this as well.

UGA Wide Receiver Chris Conley is apparently an admitted Star Wars nerd and wrote/directed a 26 minute film, complete with cameos by Mark Richt and other UGA players and students.  Pretty darn sweet.
