Didn't see this on the boards yet. The USCHO put out a list of the All-Americans for the season, and guess who didn't make the list on either 1st or 2nd team? You probably already know the answer, but Shawn Hunwick. He's the only Hobey Baker Finalist not to be named an All-American. The Full List:

EAST FIRST TEAM G Troy Grosenick, so., Union D Danny Biega, jr., Harvard D Brian Dumoulin, jr., Boston College F Spencer Abbott, sr, Maine F Alex Killorn, sr., Harvard F Austin Smith, sr., Colgate
WEST FIRST TEAM G Taylor Nelson, sr., Ferris State D Torey Krug, jr., Michigan State D Justin Schultz, jr., Wisconsin F Jack Connolly, sr., Minnesota-Duluth F Jaden Schwartz, so., Colorado College F Reilly Smith, jr., Miami

The Second Teamers:

EAST SECOND TEAM G Joe Cannata, sr., Merrimack D Mat Bodie, so., Union D Tim Kirby, sr., Air Force F Barry Almeida, sr., Boston College F Brian O’Neill, sr., Yale F Jeremy Welsh, jr., Union
WEST SECOND TEAM G Kent Patterson, sr., Minnesota D Chad Billins, sr., Ferris State D Dan DeKeyser, so., Western Michigan F Nick Bjugstad, so., Minnesota F JT Brown, so., Minnesota-Duluth F Jason Zucker, so, Denver

Also surprising nobody, Jack Connolly from Minnesota-Duluth won the Hobey Baker award. Unfortunately it's not exactly Heisman like in prestige, so we don't know the full finish order

That's strange, I don't see "1st team All-CCHA" G Taylor Nelson on the list.../s

Another great honor for Hunwick after his 5 years with the program.

Senior goalie Shawn Hunwick leaves quite a legacy behind at Michigan. He filled in towards the end of his junior season, and then was expected to give way to big-name recruit Jack Campbell in 2010-11. But Campbell walked away from his commitment to go to Major Junior, and it was all Hunwick last season, as he helped Michigan get to the national championship game. He then came back this year as a fifth-year senior when highly-touted John Gibson also backed out of his commitment. He leaves as Michigan's all-time top goaltender in goals against average.

Other CCHA picks: 2nd team F Reilly Smith, Miami, 2nd team D Torey Krug, Michigan State, All Rookie team G Frank Slubowski, Western Michigan

Just wanted to give a separate thread thanks to Shawn Hunwick. One of the best goaltenders to suit up for us. It's a shame your career had to end that way.

You're the only reason we made the tournament 2 years ago, made the national title game last year and the only reason we were a 1 seed this year

It's official, Shawn Hunwick is in the top 10! The only other goalie is Troy Grosenick from Union, and the other CCHA finalists are Reilly Smith (Miami) and Torey Krug (FYS aka MSU). Wisconsin's Justin Schultz is also a finalist.

In other news, Ferris State must be demanding a recount since their first-team all-CCHA goalie didn't make it.

Also, for the trivia buffs, only 2 goalies have won the Hobey Baker award. In 1988 Robb Stauber won it, followed by Ryan Miller in 2001.

UPDATE: And news from the CCHA Awards is Knapp has been named Goaltender of the Year. Apparently it's "based on a formula."

UPDATE UPDATE: Vote for Shawn! Right now he's at 3rd behind Spencer Abbott and Austin Smith. http://www.hobeybakeraward.com/page/show/485291

Hockey senior haikus

Hockey senior haikus

So coming off of tonight's exciting win (followed by a great end to the Red Wings game as well), I decided to put together senior haikus for the four seniors on the hockey team, ahead of tomorrow night's senior night. Yes, it's an obvious rip-off of Brian's tradition for the football team. I'm not guaranteeing quality, as we don't get to know as much about the personality of the hockey team as we do the football team. Still, it's my senior year as well, so I feel a special connection with this team as I have been watching them for four years, and the runs in the CCHA tournament in 2010 and NCAA tournament last year were both awesome.

Please add your own

Luke Glendening:

Walk-on-turned captain
Plays with tons of grit (of course)
Y U NO SCORE MORE?

David Wohlberg:

Top-line scorer
I think you have a troll-face
But your shot's sexy

Greg Pateryn:

Hardest shot on team
Always steady back on D
Grow out mustache, please

Shawn Hunwick:

Hail! Tiny Jesus
Short in stature, large in heart
You deserve Hobey

Berenson ticked at goons targeting Hunwick

Berenson ticked at goons targeting Hunwick

Red Berenson is ticked off. Apparently, goons from other teams continue to target Shawn Hunwick. From last night's game:

On three occasions during Michigan's 4-1 win over Miami on Friday, fifth-year senior Shawn Hunwick was run into his own goal by a Red Hawks player. On two occasions, his helmet went flying. On a play that was eventually called roughing on Miami's Curtis McKenzie, he laid on the ice in a daze in need of assistance from the training staff.

What's worse is that Red has sent this in before, but nothing happens:

Berenson said he plans to send tape to the league offices in Farmington Hills, which he has done in the past, but not gotten the reaction he's expected.

"We’ll keep sending the information to the league, but the league has to respond," Berenson said. "I don’t know that they’ve done a good job of it so far."

That's a pretty sharp rebuke of the CCHA. I guess if a team isn't good enough to beat Hunwick fair and square, they'll try to take him out of the game.

It is one thing for there to be rough play out on the ice. It is part of the game. It also is within reason when a team targets a weak player, knowing he can be beat. You see that in football all the time:  the opposition targets the weak link in the secondary or on the line.

But when a team tries to injure a star (exhibit A:  MSU game & Denard; exhibit B:  Miami game & Hunwick,) it's just wrong. I really hope that refs and the league won't stand for this. In a way, what does a team have to lose? A five minute penalty versus your opponent losing their goalie for the season? Do risk reward analysis, and that sounds like a good bet.

If league officials don't sanction much harsher penalities, every team from here on out is going to be going after Hunwick. Something's gotta change. Moving from the CCHA to Big 10 might be the change needed.
