Help Me Understand Mo Hurst's Draft Ranking

Help Me Understand Mo Hurst's Draft Ranking

So, the first round is in the books.  3 DTs taken, and on ESPN's "best available" Mo is listed as the 5th best remaining DT available.  He won't even be the first Hurst drafted!

I know those rankings aren't gospel, but why is he ranked where he is?

As this site has pointed out many times, not only is he one of the highest rated players according to Pro Football Focus at his position, he's one of the highest rated players ever.

What's the disconnect?  Is the enlarged heart at play?  Something else?  Seems like his combination of size, power, first step, and proven experience would put him in first round territory.

In sum, his take is that Hurst is a top half of the 1st round talent but he's worried about a lack of consistent effort:

With his quickness and power, Hurst ought to be a game wrecker in the league. And hey, he might well go early in the first round.

But for me, Hurst’s effort issues, along with the fact that at he checked into the combine at “only” 6’2 and 282 pounds — which might limit his scheme versatility — mean I’d probably wait until near the end of the first round at the earliest to take him. Nothing personal, I just like dudes who hustle all the time. And who knows? Maybe Hurst will get to the NFL and get paired with a great line coach who pulls his best effort out of him consistently.

I really hope one does, because that Hurst, I’d pay good money to see play on Sundays.

They have Mo Hurst going #4 to Cleveland. A mixed blessing for Mo.

Their mock is a little different than the others. They look at what teams need and plug in the players they think are best. They aren't trying to guess who the teams will select.

Spoiler Alert: The review is glowing.

I hope he can succeed in the pros the way he did here.  The key will be his usage - if he lands with a team whose defense knows how to use penetrating DTs, he's in business.  If they expect him to suck up double teams for other players, I don't think he'll shine anywhere near as bright.

He's a mountain-sized missle, not a deep-rooted mountain.
