Former UM Coach Lloyd Carr steps down from CFP Committee due to health reasons

The title covers the main point.  LINK

While it hurts to lose a Wolverine advocate in the CFP Committee meetings, especially before a hyped season like this, the bigger concern is for Coach Carr and his health.  Hope he is able to focus on his health!

Malik McDowell update (not good)

Malik McDowell update (not good)

Many of us were holding on to high hopes that Malik McDowell would choose UM but given this latest update from 247, it doesn't seem likely. Quote from McDowell's father traced back to a conversation with Wiltfong that is currently floating around Twitter reads "I want him out of Michigan. I don't care if that's Ohio State or Florida State".

It looks like M is out. Many believed our hopes were riding on his parent's affinity for Michigan even though Malik preferred MSU. Now it looks like his parents are urging him out of state altogether, thus crushing M's chances. Good luck to him with whatever school he chooses.

OT-ish: How Top25 teams got their nicknames

OT-ish: How Top25 teams got their nicknames

An interesting story about each team in present Top25. There is a short paragraph tracing back the nickname for each. UM, MSU, OSU, Wisc., and Nebraska are included. Most are generally known, but a few I found interesting. Most involving a change in name for one reason or the other:

Stanford:

Knew they were originally called the Indians, but didn’t know the student body held an election to decide on a new nickname, and Robber Barons won, the school president felt the moniker was disrespectful to school founder and railroad magnate Leland Stanford, (even though he historically was considered one).

MSU:

After name change from Michigan Agricultural College, wanted a name change to disassociate from “Aggies”, after a vote the winning entry “Staters” was deemed too unimaginative for the sports editor of the Lansing State-Journal, so he decided to choose another one and started calling them the Sportans, which he later changed to Spartans..

Oregon:

Originally called the Webfoots. Californians used it as a derisive nickname for their rain-soaked neighbors to the north, while Oregonians embraced the moniker with pride. However, the present “Ducks” nickname emerged out of sportswriters’ need for a shortened version of Webfoots to appear in headlines. (Again the power of the press.)

Flip it to BTN to watch the 67-65 3OT affair from last year.  It's a good time killer until the Tigers game starts.

Probably the high water mark of the Rich Rodriguez era as well as the last shining moment of Tate's Michigan career.

The game also features current Lions RB Mikael Leshoure.

Also, for you Wings fans out there, Game 1 of this past year's playoff series against the yotes is on NHL network.

After a day of neverending CC threads and mind numbing threads, I think it is time to unload on Mississippi St. While we were concerned about Jim Harbaugh's bowel movements, Mississippi's student body was having a early 1990's rave with glow sticks. I want to start this thread to pump up our fan base regardless of what coach you want to see. We can all agree on we want to see Michigan win tomorrow. It is time to send some humorous/pump up posts the way of the boys who represent us. What do ya got?

Here is a starter:

Probably will be deleted, so get them in. Time to channel your fustrations of CC and the season...against Miss St

Big Football Weekend for the State of Michigan

Big Football Weekend for the State of Michigan

Submitted by jokenjin on September 10th, 2010 at 10:45 AM

This is one of the weekends it's great to be a football fan. An absolutely HUGE Michigan/Notre Dame game followed by a VERY winnable game for the Lions against Chicago. I can't wait. Is there really a purpose for this post? Probably not - other than letting everyone know my sheer joy of football and the amount of quality games this weekend in both college and the pros. I just needed an avenue to express myself.

Since I work in Indiana, I have my Michigan flag hanging outside my cubicle to counter all those band wagon ND fans at work. We've been trash talking all week and I love it. Couple it with the fact that they are mostly Bears fans and it's been great (I work in NW Indiana in a town called East Chicago, so they are all Bears fans instead of Colts fans).

God, I love football.

Good luck to everyone's fantasy football teams this week!

GO BLUE!

MNF: Dolphins vs. Jets will be huge Michigan Reunion

MNF: Dolphins vs. Jets will be huge Michigan Reunion

Submitted by jokenjin on October 8th, 2009 at 10:05 AM

With Braylon Edwards being traded to the Jets, the next Monday Night Football game between the Jets and the Dolphins will be an amazing reunion of recent Michigan graduates. The Jets have Braylon Edwards and David Harris (boy do I miss him and I will admit I SEVERELY underrated him while he was here) while the Dolphins have Jake Long and Chad Henne.

Has there been a game between teams that had so many Michigan alums as such prominent starters? Last year's SuperBowl comes pretty close.

It will be weird to see David Harris possibly sack Chad Henne or having Long pick up a blitz from Harris or something.
