M Rowing wins 7th straight National Championship

Once again, for the SEVENTH straight year, Michigan Men's Rowing has won the ACRA National Championship!

Michigan Rowing has been a Varsity Club since Bill Martin created the special designation in 2000. With the success of the Men's club lacrosse program causing it to jump to NCAA level (along with adding a women's program from scratch), I really wouldn't be surprised to see Men's Rowing become one of the next varsity sports here.

Due to Title IX, they'd need to add a Women's sport along with it. Since Triathlon and Sand Volleyball were named emerging sports and were given the green light to become official NCAA sports in a few years, I wouldn't be surprised to see one of those added to balance it out. Sand Volleyball is essentially an extension of Volleyball season.

I've long heard tales of an eventual purchase of the 16.7 acre Edwards Brothers site by the University. Then I heard that the city would step in and prevent another big chunk of the tax base from bing taken off the tax rolls. The story, with a little more detail, has been in the papers (virtual or otherwise) the past few days.

What do you think aout the whole thing, pros & cons? AND...does anyone know more than what can be read in the news story? Who will get their hands on the property and how will it be used? The Victors for Michigan campaign seems to have a lot planned for the space. Will it happen?

Former MSU Rower and Rowing Coach Sexually Assaulted While Raising Money For Charity

Sad news coming from Lake Michigan today. A former MSU rower and rowing coach, Jennifer Gibbons,  was sexually assaulted while trying to become the first person to row around Lake Michigan alone, all while raising money for her breast cancer survivor charity, Recovery on Water.

Cancer fundraiser Jennifer Gibbons said she would not be deterred from her goal of rowing completely around the circumference ofLake Michigan following a sexual assault against her this week.

Gibbons, 27, has been rowing 1,500 miles around the border of Lake Michigan by herself since early June to raise money and awareness for her cancer survivor charity, Recovery on Water.

On Sunday, however, as Gibbons prepared to begin rowing in the early morning hours toward Beaver Island near Michigan's Northern Peninsula, a man attacked her and sexually assaulted her, according to her website, Row 4 Row.

It's a terrible ordeal and it's rather empowering to see her carry on with her journey. I hope they catch the bastard who did that to her. Best of luck to her, and I'll be keeping her in my thoughts.

P.S. In the past, a few of the threads dealing with sexual assault have had to be locked. Let's try not to let that happen and let's keep the discussion civil here.
