Thank you, Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman

Following the 2013-14 season, Coach John Beilein suddenly faced significant roster depletion. In addition to the graduation of senior, Jordan Morgan, Sophmores Nik Stauskas and Glenn Robinson III opted for the NBA. Unexpectedly, sophmore Mitch McGary also took the NBA route and Jon Horford opted to take a 5th year grad transfer to Florida. Beilein already had a 4 man class comitted for 2014 that consisted of Kam Chatman, D.J. Wilson, Ricky Doyle and Austin Hatch (who had reclassified from 2013). He would add Aubrey Dawkins and on April 19, 2014 receive a late verbal comittment from Muhammad-Ali Abdur Rahkman.

Abdur-Rahkman, from Allentown, PA CC, was a 6'4" guard that 247sports listed as a 2 star and ranked #434 on their composit. This year, the senior was a team captain and made All Big Ten Honorable Mention. With game(s) still to play, he already ranks in the top 40 in numerous Michigan career statistics: #3 in games played at 138 (Jordan Morgan 141, Zak Irvin 142), #11 in games started 110 (trailing Sims/Relford 111), #8 minutes played at 3,933, #26 in minutes per game at 29.0, #33 in field goal attempts with 976, #39 in field goals made with 438, #12 in 3 point attempts with 397, #13 in 3 pointers made at 149, #14 in 3 point % at .375, #18 in steals with 104, #20 in assist with 279 (Zak Irvin 282) and #35 in total points scored with 1,227 (Trey Burke  1,231).

By all accounts, he is a fine young man and a credit to the University of Michigan.  Those who stay will be champions.

I thought it would be a good idea to dedicate tonight's game thread to Ace and his ongoing quest for good health. Hoping all the positive vibes generated in this thread will bring some good mojo Ace's way and that the rest of the comments, no matter how unfunny, negative, or just plain insane, will bring smiles to his face when tempered with the realization that after all, we're all participating because of our shared love for all things MICHIGAN. To your health, Ace!!! GO BLUE, Beat Purdue!!!

Camp Sanderson (MBB S&C Article)

Camp Sanderson (MBB S&C Article)

http://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/2017/03/07/niyo-ums-sanderson-delivers-strides-march/98886180/

The Detroit News's John Niyo has a nice overview of Jon Sanderson's S&C program - and how he works with Beilein to develop '15-'16 Moe Wagners into '16-'17 Moe Wagners.

The whole article is worth a read - here's a taste:

“(Beilein) has a lot of confidence in recruiting and signing a kid that isn’t quite big enough, strong enough or athletic enough,” Sanderson said. “Because I think he has a lot of confidence that we can develop and make him better.”
Much is made of Beilein’s finicky recruiting, and a reluctance, it seems, to chase five-star talent.
“But if you get a guy who’s A-plus in every category, he’s a top-5 recruit — those guys are hard to get,” Sanderson said. “And if you do get ’em it’s hard to have a stable program because you only have ’em for one year. So to me, if you’re going to be deficient in any of these categories, get the length, get the skill set, get the kid that fits the culture, and I’ll make him a better athlete. I’ll develop him.”

UM possibly making the switch from Adidas to Nike?

UM possibly making the switch from Adidas to Nike?

Here's a Freep article discussing the possibility of Michigan realigning it's brand with that of Nike. Good news for those of us who have been alienated by Adidas's and their past offerings such as the horrid Bumble bee jersey fiasco... I still cringe when I see those things (scratches arms like a crack head).

I don't know how likely this transition is, but I can't help but to wonder whether or not this news will effect Michigan's standing with perennial 5 star bb recruit Jaylen Brown, who recently made a statement that he was definitely going to an Adidas school! I've had a few conversations with JB and happen to know for a fact Michigan is a legitimate front runner for this kid! However this news can't hurt Kentucky's chances who I believe is right there with Michigan.

I don't know how much stock these kids put into any particular athletic brands when making these decisions, although I would imagine that with the potential sponsorship dynamic at play it definitely factors. Who knows, maybe Michigan and the greatness of Beilein will win out!

A statistical reason for hope, if you needed any, for basketball next season.

When Caris LeVert & Derrick Walton went down, Michigan was suddenly down 85.4% of their scoring from last season. Only Zak Irvin (15.4 minutes per game), Spike Albrecht (14.7 minutes per game), and Max Bielfeldt (4.7 minutes per game) even played meaningful minutes in 2013-2014.

Next year if LeVert comes back, Michigan will return 92.9% of their scoring from this year while adding Duncan Robinson. Consider the fact that DJ Wilson will be back, as well as the fact that he is one of 6 freshmen, and at least some of them will likely improve going into their sophomore seasons (as some of them have already shown growth) and this team will be downright dangerous next year.

I know hopes are already high for next season for most people but I was pretty surprised by numbers. Aaaaaaaand Harbaugh for football. 2015-2016 will be a good year.

While playing 31 minutes, scoring 18 points, and grabbing 13 rebounds (6 offensive!), Mitch also managed to drop this sweet dime. (Someone, please feel free to embed.)

This is something that crossed my mind when I saw that Thornton will visit Kentucky. A guy like Calipari probably has no qualms with negative recruiting, but what would he say? We've got a red hot coaching staff committed to stay together till '19, world class facilities, world class academics, great NBA opportunities, and incredible fans/students/alumni. So what does the guy say?

1) Sure, they're great with development, but you're already Elite. We won't ask you to work.

2) He's only had 5back-to-back tourney teams. That's not THAT many.

I can't think of any.
