Where college football means the most

Where college football means the most

So the NYT has made a map showing the percentage of facebook users from each county in the US who have "liked" the "college football" page. They're calling that "where college football means the most" which I think may be a little flawed for multiple reasons. The results are certainly a little interesting in any case.

Some obvious things that stand out are the relative apathy of the East Coast and West Coast toward college football, and the South's obsession with it. However, I did find it mindly surprising that Texas, Tennessee, and Louisiana have so fewer counties with 30% or more "liked" than Alabama. Also, it seems Nebraska, despite their relative downturn over the past decade, is still just as much into college football as Alabama.

I also found it rather interesting that for Michigan, the counties with 30% or more FB users liking college football are centered around East Lansing. Would that have been any different had this been made a decade ago? Washtenaw county is still relatively high overall (24%), but well below the 30% threshold.

The New York TImes just came out with a cool interactive map that breaks down which team each county in the U.S. roots for.  If you click on the map it should pop up.

There are a bunch of interesting things in here. For example:

  • There are more Michigan fans in the Columbus area than there are Ohio State fans in Ann Arbor
  • Northwestern doesn't crack the top three in any county in the state of Illinois
  • Michigan is number 3 in Chicago behind Notre Dame and Illinois
  • Auburn and Alabama are not nearly as even geographically as I would have imagined

What else can you find?

Here is a map I put together with the recruiting data found in the "useful stuff" tab.  I made a few of these last year, but this is the first one I have done for 2013.  Mainly because I was using a educational copy with a one year license that expired, but I was able to obtain this one through my works "Home Use Program".

I included the School where the player commited in the labels.....so if you dont see a school name then the player is uncommited.  Here is a direct link if you want to zoom in for a little more details.  Let me know if I happened to mis anything.  I'll try and put out a few more of these in the upcoing weeks.

- "Centerville that Odenigbo is from is more toward the western part of Ohio."

- "Kuhar, Sam Grant and Kalis all go to the same school. Where you have Kalis' marker is the right geographic area for that particular St. Eds, I believe."

I updated the recruiting Map with the latest information....I'll probably be doing this once a week.  Especially since things have been moving so quickly.

I added a 50 mile buffer around all the universities in the BCS conferences....this gives a nice picture of whose backyard we are dipping in.  I am still playing around with the formatting and symbology.  If you have any questions a/o comments please let me know.

This is going to be a test run......but I am a recently laid-off geospatial analyst, and when I saw that Nebraska map posted earlier today I got the itch to make one myself.  So this map is pretty rough.....I am going to grab my xternal HD tomorrow, and I have a lot more data to make it more aesthetically pleasing as this evolves.  Just want to see how all the fonts read (ie to big/to small) and how the composition looks when its posted on the web.

Anyways, all the data you see posted I pulled from “Touch the Banner”

***edit: I can't embed the map w/o it being ridiculous in size.....however...

***edit2:  Thanks for the feedback...I incorporated some of the suggestions I recieved.  The next map will come out when there are some new recruits to add....thanks for the responses.

CommonCensus provides statistics on all sorts of totally irrelevant stuff, but one of their interesting ones is density of fans for NFL, MLB, NHL, and NCAAF.

The NCAAF (this link provides maginfiying capabilities at the original site):

Interesting to see the break down of the state of Michigan. It should at least offer some of you who like to bitch about MSU. If you open the image, it gets much bigger. Indiana is all sorts of colors, which seems pretty crazy, too.
