OT: Schlissel calls out Freep for inaccuracies

OT: Schlissel calls out Freep for inaccuracies

Submitted by BlueFish on February 12th, 2018 at 11:55 AM

Via today's University Record (LINK):

President Mark Schlissel wrote a letter to the editor responding to a series of [Ed-BF: Freep] stories about U-M's endowment, and to a related editorial. He said the articles "invent conclusions and peddle innuendo not supported by facts," and that the editorial's premise was "irresponsible, incomprehensible and false."

Disclaimer: I haven't read Pres. Schlissel's letter, as it would require me to give the Freep a page visit (which I've not done since 9/1/09). I acknowledge that could be viewed as irresponsible, if I'm posting this.  But I have no reason to believe Pres. Schlissel is amiss here. Given the choice of comparing the ethics of Pres. Schlissel vs. the Freep, there is no choice.

I post this only to demonstrate the Freep's continued (EDIT: and apparent) disregard for facts and journalistic ethics, where it comes to the University.  Why anyone would trust the Freep as a source of reliable news, I don't know.  Their track record is abyssmal.

I'm not including a Freep link.  It can be accessed via the Record, if necessary.

EDIT: A commenter below provided a link to the U-M Public Affairs response (LINK).

OT: David Harns directly calls out Drew Sharp about plagiarized article

For those unfamiliar, Drew Sharp plagiarized an article written by David Harns that was posted to isportsweb.com. The original story written by Harns was about a friendship that developed between Connor Cook and Miranda Shay McCoy (a quadriplegic). Only for context here is Sharp's direct ripoff of the article.

MGoBlog Thread from December 25th, 2015

This first bit sort of sets the tone:

I am, however, not satisfied with how Sharp has handled it. Put bluntly, I did my best to take the high road during this situation, assuming Drew Sharp would join me there eventually. Clearly, he has not.

I didn't want to quote the whole article just highlighted this first bit.

Drew Sharp Owes The Public An Apology

See for yourself or neg away. I thought anything anti-sharp is good.

The article talks about the genius of Harbaugh setting up satellite camps down south, and his overall media and promotion strategy.  It reads like a fan letter about Coach Harbaugh.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

For those who haven't seen it yet, it's a nice little video on ESPN lauding Gardner and sportsmanship in general.

And here's a Freep appreciation article on Gardner as well:

I've never been a huge fan of Kid Rock, but his response to Susan Tompor's Free Press article on his "Made in Detroit" clothing line has me reevaluating that.

Too bad DB couldn’t have opened with the same line as Kid Rock back during the Freep Jihad presser..

Dear Susan Tompor,

Let me first start off by cordially inviting you to go fuck yourself. I have always said that I do care what people in my hometown think of me, and the hatchet job you have just written about The Made In Detroit company in The Detroit Free Press has made me so upset that I am left with no choice but to defend myself and my company.

Is it just me or is Michael Rosenberg correct on his article.  He claims MSU has to lose for Michigan to win the division.

I thought if there was a three way tie, that Michigan would win on overall record as Nebraska and MSU would each have two losses.  Am I wrong here, does it go to big 10 record first and that's what would put MSU in with a three way tie.

*** WARNING: Freep article ***

I'm not posting this to bash the Freep or to increase the odds that Section 1 blows an O-ring, although I think the guy is probably at risk for that. Maybe someone could modify his hosts file and redirect him to something happy.

Hoke on Tressel

Hoke on Tressel

Brady Hoke comments (in MGoBlog's Favorite Newspaper) on Tressel:

Regular version, in case the Print one expires:

His remarks seemed too unrehearsed and off-the-cuff for my taste.  Just saying Tressel is a "good man" (however preposterous that might be to some) and a "good coach" (much more supportable) would be fine.

But adding "... they'll fight through that situation ..." and then "... I don't know that situation ..." is, at best, awkward.  Why say anything like that?  Certain other coaches at UMich have been tattooed for being "unpolished."

One wonders what Corporate Guy Brandon (who would not be expected to shoot from the hip) thought when reading that.
