OT: Bob Stoops thinks the SEC is overrated

Bob Stoops believes that the Hype machine for the SEC is overblown.

“So you’re listening to a lot of propaganda that gets fed out to you. You’re more than smart enough to figure it out. Again, you can look at the top two, three, four, five, six teams, and you can look at the bottom six, seven, eight, whatever they are. How well are they all doing?"

“What’d we [the Big 12] have, eight of 10 teams in bowl games this year? Again, you figure it all out.”

It seems that winning the last 7 National Championships is not domination

OT - Sun rises in east, Auburn pays players, alters grades

Selena Roberts, formerly of Sports Illustrated, has released a new investegative piece for her own blog in regards to Auburn University paying football players and altering grades under the watchful eye of Gene Chizik.  Roberts has credibility - she was the first journalist to do an investagative piece on A-Rod's use of steroids - so this can probably be taken fairly seriously....

Rumors have been rampant forever, but now we have some specifics:

Three players say that before the BCS Championship game the team was told that as many as nine of their teammates would not be able to play in the title game because they were academically ineligible. “We thought we would be without Mike Dyer because he said he was one of them, but Auburn found a way to make those dudes eligible,” says Mike Blanc, a teammate and roommate of Mike McNeil’s.

Receiver Darvin Adams, a star player with NFL dreams and a family to support, wrestled with whether to turn pro after the championship season. He discussed his plans with teammates and told them how much pressure he was under by Auburn coaches to stay. McNeil and Blanc say Auburn coaches offered Adams several thousand dollars to stay for his senior year.

One of the top RB's of the 2010 class, and young sensation for Auburn has decided to follow his OC Gus Malzahn  to Arkansas State. Chizik suspended him indefinitely before the Chick-Fil-A  Bowl for disobeying a undisclosed team rule.

Crazy turn of events for Dyer whose "I WUZ DOWN, NO I WUZN'T" play led to Auburn beating Oregon in the 2011 BCS National Championship Game.

The SEC Presidents have voted 12-0 to adopt the 25 player class limit proposal. Recall that earlier this week the SEC coaches voted against the proposal (an advisory vote, BTW) 12-0.

GentryEstes247 SEC has adopted 25-man limit for signing classes and will propose it nationally, Slive says. Coaches were unanimously against that.

Andy_Staples SEC passed the 25-signee annual limit and closed some loopholes. Still not as strong as Big Ten's 85 hard cap, but better [than it was].
In addition:
GentryEstes247 Conference office will now oversee the use of medical schloarships

Andy_Staples SEC has voted to prohibit 7-on-7 competitions from campuses.

Andy_Staples SEC banned grad student exception for players with only 1 yr of eligibility. Will keep Masoli-type transfers from happening [Doesn't go into effect until Oct 2011, so this doesn't impact Russell Wilson, et al.]

Looks like the SEC Presidents and Commissioner Slive are trying to get their ADs and HCs under a modicum of control.

GentryEstes247 Slive on league coaches: "Obviously they have their own interest to pursue ... We were able to accommodate some of their concerns."

GentryEstes247 Slive: "No one wants to win more than I do, but we don't want to win at the expense of young people."

HABOTN Did coaches have a problem with the 7-on-7 ban? "That was unanimous all the way," Slive said.

Of course, the devil is in the details, so we'll have to wait and see how these changes are implemented. Still, this is encouraging.

TV revenue stuff:

Andy_Staples SEC is splitting up $234 million in revenue, according to Slive.

Andy_Staples Slive's response to new TV deals in other leagues: "Look-ins" written into SEC deals that allow for adjustments if market changes. (Mo $)
