I love the Michigan drill.

No, you don't understand.  I LOVE it.

I love when we used to do it in football practice (Grand Rapids Central Rams!!!), I love watching other people do it, and I look forward to the Countdown to Kickoff video featuring it.

It also provides a prime opportunity to overanalyze single reps and draw untenable conclusions about the quality of our team.  To my knowledge, however, nobody has picked through this year's video to offer commentary.

So here we go - a rep by rep breakdown about who played who, who won, who looked good and who looked bad.  Just remember - you opened the thread.

REP 1 @ :30

O: I. Bunting (TE)
D: L. Marshall (DE)
T: D. Johnson (RB)

Both players fire kind of softly and fight to a draw.  Freshmen look like freshmen - more than a little tentative.  Johnson needs to cut once and makes a good move to run free.

REP 2 @ :36

O: B. Braden (RT)
D: M. Hurst Jr. (DT)
T: F. Montbrun (RB)

Braden comes out with a great punch that surprises Hurst who gets on roller skates.  Montbrun runs free.

REP 3 @ :38

O: G. Glasgow (C/G)
D: B. Pallante (DT)
T: D. Green (RB)

Glasgow fires first while Pallante still on ground.  Glasgow pushes him back once they meet.  Green looks slow or hurt.

REP 4 @ :43

O: K. Bosch (G)
D: M. Godin (DT)
T: W. Shallman (RB)

Both players fire off a little slowly and meet without much force.  Bosch controls Godin but does not bring him down.  Absolutely no "pop" here from anyone.

REP 5 @ :48

O: D. Norfleet (SLOT)
D: J. Lewis (CB)
R: A. Whitfield (RB)

Holy shit do these guys go after it.  Very feisty.  Lewis a little slow to react off the snap.  Whitfield makes a very instinctive move to get free.

REP 6 @ :53

O: A. Williams (TE)
D: F. Clark (DE)
T: D. Johnson (RB)

Clark fires into Williams hard but Williams seals him off very well and Johnson runs free.

REP 7 @ :58

O: E. Magnuson (LT/LG)
D: O. Pipkins (DT)
T: D. Green (RB)

Pipkins rockets off the ball and utterly controls Magnuson, then spins to wrap up Green and drops to knees to drag him.  Green looks surprised but protects ball well.

REP 8 @ 1:02

O: B. Pliska (OL)
D: D. Morgan (OLB)
T: T. Isaac (RB)

Pliska fires off ball very well but Morgan doesn't even flinch and takes over control.  Morgan slides to Isaac who hits him face up very hard, but Morgan stones him and drags him down.  Morgan looks like he's a notch above everyone else here.

REP 9 @ 1:09

O: D. Dawson (G/T)
D: W. Henry (DT)
T: Either W. Shallman, J. Kerridge, or B. Henderson (all FBs)

Dawson fires slow but Henry is in control for the entire rep... until Dawson just feels it out and seals a lane for the FB, who has a very nice reaction and run.  I'm pretty confident it's B. Henderson but not sure.

REP 10 @ 1:15

O: J. Miller (C)
D: R. Glasgow (DT)
T: D. Green (RB)

Both linemen fight to a draw.  There's a slap fight with hands to disengage but Miller is too low for Glasgow to handle.  Green slides and squares to make contact with Glasgow but slips by him.

REP 11 @ 1:20

O: B. Bars (OL)
D: J. Bolden (LB)
T: W. Shallman (RB)

I remember this from last year - you can always tell a Michigan drill rep featuring Bolden.  He's insanely aggressive and looks crazy.  Bars locks on but Bolden punches his way out, slides to Shallman, tackles, strips, and "returns" the fumble.

REP 12 @ 1:27

O: Either A. Darboh or J. Chesson (WRs)
D: D. Thomas (???)
T: A. Whitfield (RB)

The offensive player totally controls Thomas the whole way, who puts up a decent fight but isn't in the play.  The players totally love this rep.

REP 13 @ 1:33

O: L. Tuley-Tillman (OT)
D: M. Hurst, Jr. (DT)
T: S. Houma (FB)

Good contact from Tuley-Tillman but he can't seal Hurst.  Hurst arm-tackles Houma and wrestles a little bit until the whistle.  Houma doesn't look slow.

REP 14 @ 1:38

O: C. Fox (OT)
D: C. Wormley (DL)
T: D. Green (RB)

Fox locks on but Wormley spins free, bearhugs Green and tries to spin him to the ground.  Green's run is done but stays on his feet.  I should note that Fox does not look overweight here - I was surprised it was him.

REP 15 @ 1:43

O: D. Samuelson (OL)
D: J. Ross III (LB)
T: T. Isaac (RB)

Ross pops into Samuelson, who is slow to react.  Ross is in control but HOLY SHIT Isaac squares and totally buries Ross with a shoulder shiver.  Isaac is running with extreme power here - Ross didn't have a chance.

REP 16 @ 1:48

O: A. Williams (TE)
D: H. Poggi (DL)
T: D. Johnson (RB)

Williams fires faster and hits lower but Poggi stays active with his upper body, rolls free and buries Johnson.  It's worth noting that this gets a big reaction from the team - everyone seems either surprised or happy or relieved for Poggi.  Something weird is going on here but it's impossible to say what.

REP 17 @ 1:54

O: B. Braden (RT)
D: F. Clark (DE)
T: Maybe T. Isaac?  (RB)

A "wow" rep.  Braden fires and locks on but Clark pops him and snaps Braden's head back.  Braden is just trying to hold on.  Clark rips him aside to go square-on-square with the RB's shoulder pads while Clark wraps up and drags down.  RB is just trying not to fumble.  Big response from the team and coaches.

REP 18 @ 2:06

O: K. Heitzman (TE)
D: B. Beyer (DE)
T: D. Johnson (RB)

Beyer stays lower than Heitzman but Heitzman is in control here.  Seals well and Johnson cuts properly to run free.  This is a weak rep.

REP 19 @ 2:12

O: M. Cole (LT)
D: T. Charlton (DE)
T: S. Houma (FB)

Cole stays low but Charlton is too strong.  Charlton is so intent on popping into Cole that he takes himself out of the play, though, and Cole senses it to seal a lane for Houma.  Houma runs it out.  Sidenote: Houma runs kind of well.

REP 20 @ 2:16

O: K. Bosch (G)
D: M. Godin (DT)
T: D. Green (RB)

Both linemen fire hard, but Godin is stood up easily.  Green shimmies by.  I think Green is hurt at the time of this video - something looks wrong with his gait.

REP 21 @ 2:21

O: P. Kugler (C)
D: W. Henry (DT)
T: W. Shallman (RB)

Kugler fires earlier.  Henry reacts and does a nice job shedding Kugler's block but Shallman slips by as Henry rips off his hand towel.

REP 22 @ 2:25

O: B. Dever (WR)
D: J. Clark (DB)
T: J. Hayes, I think (RB)

This is a must-watch rep.  Dever fires off really quickly.  Clark is tentative and absorbs the contact before squaring up to try and find the RB, but Hayes makes a stellar cut and finds the lane.  What's fascinating is what happens after Hayes runs free.  Dever and Clark are wrestling and Dever totally buries him - it looks personal, frankly.  Dever starts a fight and the defense responds.  I know we're supposed to be "classy" but Dever comes across as a bad motherfucker in this rep.

REP 23 @ 2:34

O: D. Dawson (G/T)
D: O. Pipkins (DT)
T: B. Henderson (FB)

Pipkins fires first, Dawson flinches.  It looks like Dawson just wants to get through this rep.  Pipkins shoves him off, gets free, and then unloads directly into Henderson who struggles to stay alive.  The crowd goes wild.

REP 24 @ 2:42

O: J. Miller (C)
D: B. Pallante (DT)
T: J. Kerridge (FB)

Pallante fires first, but Miller is just too strong and pushes him aside to get Kerridge free.  Pallante is very upset about this.

REP 25 @ 2:48

O: B. Bars (OL)
D: M. Ferns (LB)
T: W. Shallman (RB)

Bars gets lower but Ferns stays in control, although the strength of Bars's push should be enough to get a lane for Shallman... who slows up too early and Ferns makes the low tackle.

REP 26 @ 2:52

O: M. Jocz (TE)
D: ??? Tall African-American player
T: D. Johnson (RB)

This rep is sort of soft all-around.  Jocz seals the defensive player well but Johnson dances around, allowing the defensive player to get back in the play.

REP 27 @ 2:57

O: L. Tuley-Tillman (OT)
D: B. Mone (DT)
T: S. Houma (FB)

Tuley-Tillman gets too low and Mone controls him.  Mone squares after he defeats Tuley-Tillman, finds Houma, and destroys.  Mone looks like he's still overweight.  The coaches are VERY excited for Mone - he obviously did a thing right for the first time in this rep.

REP 28 @ 3:07

O: J. Miller (C)
D: W. Henry (DT)
T: D. Green (RB)

Interesting.  Miller stands up Henry, who uses pure strength on Miller to push the opposite way than he'd prefer to go; Miller says "sure" and seals the backside while staying in control.  Green reacts with a jump-cut to get free.  Miller looks very strong here.

REP 29 @ 3:13

O: B. Pliska (OL)
D: C. Winovich (LB)
T: T. Isaac (RB)

Pliska pops Winovich hard, knocking him back.  Winovich stays in it though and finds Isaac, who runs hard and spins free.

REP 30 @ 3:19

O: M. Ways I think (WR)
D: B. Watson (DB)
T: Either A. Whitfield or F. Montbrun... perspective makes it tough to tell

Ways fires first and thinks he's in control as the RB shoots by... but Watson takes this personally and fights with Ways for several seconds until both go to the ground.  Watson is stronger than Ways.

Countdown to Kickoff - Day 353: Al Borges

Countdown to Kickoff - Day 353: Al Borges

It's funny how the Borges pressers used to get half as many views as Mattison's and now it's the other way around. What's the over/under on Norfleet MGoQuestions next Tuesday? I guess it doesn't matter since they'll all be cut out of the video.
