TheWolverine.com: Caleb Stacey Profile

Submitted by MGoShoe on April 27th, 2011 at 8:07 PM

Over at TheWolverine.com, Michael Spath has posted an interesting profile of 2011 OL commit Caleb Stacey [not premium content] with an extensive evaluation by his high school coach, Kurry Commins. Some sample quotes follow, but click on the link for the full monty.

"Caleb's only a shade over 6-4 but he has extremely long arms. [He] is a notch above most linemen when it comes to the cerebral part of the game. He understands blocking techniques, angles, leverage - the ins and outs of the game.

"I had a kid win the Super Bowl last year [linebacker Diyral Briggs] and I've had some other really great talents but in my 11 years, Caleb will be, by far, the most complete player I've ever had by the time he finishes his senior year."

"...[H]e's an ideal interior player. He's a very mean guy on the field. Not dirty, but he's one of those old-school throwbacks that is going to punish the man he lines up against.

"This is a kid that comes from a very humble background and he brings his lunch pail every day. He's worked so hard for this opportunity and when he got that Michigan offer I think he was blown away. I know those coaches very well and what I told Caleb is that they are guys that are going to be invested in your long-term future, and you want to play for guys like that.

"I think after that trip to West Virginia he just sort of knew that he was wasting his time looking at other places because Michigan had everything he wanted."

Nice to see that quality preferred walk-on that looks like a diamond in the rough football player but a high quality and character person.  Welcome to the University of Michigan Gary!

Disclaimer: This is my first topic post on the mgoboard. I hope I don't earn a trip to Bolivia.

It appears as though the first 2010 recruiting profile (Carvin Johnson) was posted on March 1st of last year. Perhaps Brian hasn't posted them yet because of the actual events happening with the hoops team, or because we don't have as many recruits in this class. I'm just itching to see the YMRMFSPA comparisons for our new players.

Big Ten Recruiting Class Rankings 2-6-11

Big Ten Recruiting Class Rankings 2-6-11

New Michigan commit(s), and this bad boy hits the front page. It was a hectic Signing Day in the Big Ten, so all the action won't be listed here. Last rankings. Barring any unforeseen developments, this will be the last set of rankings for the 2011 class. New rankings:

Big Ten+ Recruiting Class Rankings
Rank School # Commits Rivals Avg Scout Avg ESPN Avg
1 Ohio State 24 5.75 3.71 78.96
2 Notre Dame 23 5.75 3.61 79.09
3 Nebraska 19 5.72 3.42 78.47**
4 Michigan State 21 5.64 3.19 76.80*
5 Michigan 20 5.63 3.30 77.45
6 Iowa 23 5.57 3.00 73.09*
7 Wisconsin 20 5.58 2.85 72.15
8 Penn State 16 5.61 3.25 76.50
9 Illinois 27 5.54 2.70 73.37
10 Northwestern 17 5.54 2.88 76.59

12 Indiana 20 5.50 2.62 69.48
13 Purdue 15 5.47 2.60 71.17***

Rivals rankings are on the "RR" scale, which is on a scale from about 5 to about 6.1. Unrated prospects are given a 5.1 rating, on par with the worst of any Big Ten commit last year. Scout is on the 5-star system (unranked players earn 1 star), and ESPN uses grades out of 100 (unranked is 40 or 45, except JuCo players, who aren't included in the average).

Ohio State takes the recruiting crown with a good-sized cass of quality players. They're slightly behind Notre Dame in ESPN average, but a big part of that is having a long snapper commit. It sounds like OH OL Chris Carter will sign with Ohio State after all, so I've left him in the chart.

Michigan State's class is high-variance, with a couple highly rated guys (though 5 stars for Lawrence Thomas is an exaggeration for sure), and some low-end guys as well. I have Sparty just a hair ahead of their in-state rivals, and the extra commit for MSU was the tiebreaker.

I am wholly unimpressed by Minnesota's recruiting class, a hybrid of Tim Brewster and Jerry Kill. They have more JuCo guys than any other school, and a number of guys they have to hope pan out as sleepers. Note former Wolverine Tim McAvoy's brothers are bound for Minneapolis.

I work at a software company in A2 and they just announced that because of impending DEATHSTORM 2011, our office will be shut down tomorrow. This means I get to roll out of bed, curl up on the couch, flip on ESPNU and "work from home" for the day.

This yearly article almost always contains a few interesting tidbits.  Proceed with caution, especially with #1:

"... past experiences with other Renaissance players ..."  Blah, blah, blah ...

I hope Brady Hoke gets a better deal.  Looks good for him so far ...

Arkansas Fans Do Not Seem To Want Chris Barnett

Arkansas Fans Do Not Seem To Want Chris Barnett

Submitted by namaste on January 31st, 2011 at 12:47 AM

I was reading the scout boards, and I came across an interesting thread. Apparently Arkansas fans aren't enamoured with 4* recruit Chris Barnett. The OP of the thread posted screenshots of an Arkansas forum with fans saying things like: "Barnett is turning into a major headcase with an injury hanging over his head." Some of the things these fans are saying are unconscionable attacks of his character.

An Arkansas fansite posted a status from Barnett's facebook page after he re-opened his recruitment asking for patience and understanding from Razorback fans; it is unfortunate that he is getting neither.

Injury or not, I hope Chris Barnett makes the best decision of his life (when I did the same, it was for me), and chooses to attend the University of Michigan.

If you can't differentiate the blue and black on your screen, the links are at "interesting thread," "Chris Barnett," and "posted a status."
