zach charbonnet

[Bryan Fuller]

This is a bummer man:

Michigan sophomore running back Zach Charbonnet entered the transfer portal on Monday, 247Sports has learned.

Charbonnet was largely sidelined this season with just 19 carries as Hassan Haskins took over as the top back. Haskins is back. Michigan also has Blake Corum returning and brings in Donovan Edwards and Tavierre Dunlap, so they're likely to be fine at the spot.

Charbonnet brought the biggest upside of anyone in the backfield and was a killer pass-blocker, so his loss is a loss. Michigan's streak of highly rated running back busts continues unabated. Please direct complaints to Steve Lorenz, who did not follow my directive to have Charbonnet's ranking top out at #51.

FORMATION NOTES: I've started some Serious Abbreviations about 10 years too late. How many times have I uselessly typed "shot" before "gun"? I don't know. No more. Shotgun is now Gun. "Trips Twin TE"…

two WR to one side, two TEs on the same side

gun TTE

is now TTE. "Trips Tight Bunch"…

three WR/TEs lined up in a bunch attached to the LOS

pistol TTB

…is now TTB.

Anyway. M moved from their 1 RB, 1 TE stuff to a lot more 2TE or TE+Mason stuff in the second half, which radically improved the run game as the DTs shooting into the backfield were no longer that relevant.

SUBSTITUTION NOTES: McNamara replaced Milton after five drives and went the rest of the way. OL saw Vastardis replaced by Carpenter at C, reputedly because of injury. With the starting OTs still out this went Barnhart/Filiaga/Carpenter/Zinter/Stueber. At TE Eubanks got much of the early action but severe blocking issues saw All and Schoonmaker more prominent later.

WR and RB were the same mix they've been, with a lot of guys getting snaps. The main exception was Haskins getting 25 carries and seemingly establishing himself as RB1.

[After THE JUMP: gonna be a lot of yelling at me about QB stuff, probably

FORMATION NOTES: Michigan didn't do anything particularly unusual. Everything was from the gun, and much of it featured two tight ends. This has Ben Mason as a wing TE:

Michigan Wolverines at Minnesota Golden Gophers 24.10.20.mp4_snapshot_00.02.11_[2020.10.26_18.55.06]

I tried to file Mason as a RB because I think that's a better representation of what Michigan can do when he's on the field but I may have missed some snaps like this where he's lined up at TE.

Minnesota spent virtually the whole night in this 4-3 over, frequently with a standup end. Probably! This game featured extreme pore-o-vision and it was at times difficult to tell who was on the field.

SUBSTITUTION NOTES: Milton, then McNamara briefly, at QB. RB was a near-equal rotation between Corum, Haskins, Charbonnet, and Evans. There were a few snaps with two RBs and one wildcat snap.

At WR, another blender. Sainristil, Wilson, Bell, Johnson, and Jackson all got a significant number of snaps. AJ Henning and Jake McCurry made cameos. McCurry was mostly out there for the heavy package.

At TE/FB, All got a large majority of the snaps, probably 80%. Mason was in for ~50% of them; Schoonmaker and gussied-up OL Joel Honigford got maybe a dozen each. 6'8" beanpole walk-on Carter Selzer got in for a snap.

OL was Hayes/Filiaga/Vastardis/Stueber/Mayfield as expected. Zinter got a little time when Stueber got dinged; Barnhart got the last handful of snaps at LT. Second team OL appears to be Barnhart/Korican/Carpenter/Zinter/Jones.
