We recorded this podcast once again at the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown. Their rooms for the remaining home games are booking up very quickly so get on that or wind up staying somewhere where the closest thing in walking distance is a Burger King.

We Couldn’t Have One Without the Other

We can do this because people support us. You should support them too so they’ll want to do it again next year! The show is presented by UGP & The Bo Store, and if it wasn’t for Rishi and Ryan we’d be talking to ourselves.

Our other sponsors are also key to all of this: Peak Wealth Management, Homesure Lending, Ann Arbor Elder Law, the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown, the University of Michigan Alumni Association, Michigan Law Grad,, Human Element, DEO Bookkeeping, and Lantana Hummus

---------------------------------

1. The Offense

starts at 1:00

We welcome our new version of John O’Korn overlords. All hail the practice hype. Especially nice that we don’t have to worry what happened to Brandon Peters anymore. Throw the ball to Perry and the tight ends: easy. Chris Evans also took back his job. Offensive line…that’s a discussion.

2. The Defense

starts at 23:06

We welcome back our Don Brown overlords. We’re not allowed to sacrifice unto linebacking god Devin Bush until we have properly performed the ritual reading of Purdue’s second half drives. Praise also unto the secondary, McCray for not getting edged in this game, and even the refs, if backhandedly.

3. Special Teams and Game Theory

starts at 37:27

Brad Robbins has a prospectin’ name: Ol’ Quinn Nordin. Long speculation on the maximum number of players Michigan can reasonably have in the box score wearing number three. Also Brad Robbins has the punting job. Purdue’s punter erased DPJ. Crawford kickoff grumblin.

4. Talking Big Ten with Jamie Mac

starts at 48:20

Just Ace and Jamie since sick Brian was done being a jackhammer. What happens in a game versus Vegas hopefully stays in Vegas. What happens at night in Kinnick fortunately stays there too. Maryland on its fourteenth starting quarterback in six years loses to Scott Frost, who’s going to have a better job than UCF next year. Speaking of, Nebraska is horrible. Michigan State nearly loses their quarterback in a valiant attempt to win with dignity. Blocky-catchy offense FTW!

This edition of MGoRadio was recorded before a live happy hour audience at HOMES Brewery in Ann Arbor. If your bar would like to host us on a week Michigan’s playing on the road, hit me up.

Special Guest: Rishi Narayan, co-owner of our presenting sponsors UGP & the Bo Store, won’t come on the podcast when it’s in his store, but put him somewhere he can get a beer and he makes Rich Rod jokes on the Gimmicky Top Five!

Special Brian Replacement: Brian is sick so Seth Fisher (Hi Mom!) sat in in his stead while Ace hosted.

Air Force After UFR: The Offense

starts at 1:00

Yeah now we’re worried about Speight. The not seeing his best receiver wide open problem is a new one to tack on to can’t throw a fade and inaccuracy issues. It may be pressure (that right tackle spot isn’t going to fix itself overnight). Positive: he looked kind of like this last year. Running game execution is what it is. Receiver execution is youth. Fanbase is going through growing pains with this team.

After UFR: The Defense

starts at 21:53

When can we give Winovich a shield? Offense designed to make you look foolish made Michigan’s defenders look like savants…except for that one play. Gary is probably equally good but for whatever reason Air Force chose to double him and live and die on whether they can beat Winovich. Good choice.

Gimmicky Top Five: Things We’d Do With MGoBlog While Brian’s Away

starts at 40:03

UGP & Bo Store co-founder—and MGoBlog’s longest-serving sponsor—Rishi Narayan sat in with Seth & Ace as we used the opportunity afforded by Brian’s absence to dream of what we’d do with the site without him. OMG Shirtless Draftageddons ahoy!

Purdue Preview

starts at 50:05

Louisville game was eye-opening; Mizzou has given up on breathing. We’re still pumping the breaks here. Microcosm of the Big Ten: lots of good running backs and linebackers, very weak on receivers, linemen, and safeties, project to get a lot better. Sindelar is the guy Michigan fans think Speight is. PLAY. ASSIGNMENT. FOOTBALL. Talk is cheap.

MUSIC:

YouTube changed up their policies so we're trying to stay away from copyrighted music on live broadcasts. If you or a friend made some good tunes and don't have a label out scrubbing for them we'd be happy to feature you.

This week it's The Champaign Saints, a local band who sent us their music (and had a four-name law firm in their signature because that’s how MGoBlog readers roll). Songs:

  • “Don’t Cost My Name”
  • “The Love Unconscious” because Devin Bush
  • “Ann Arbor Midnights”
  • “Across 110th Street”

Things discussed:

  • Is Purdue for real? They’re ginning up stuff with RPS
  • Michigan is gonna get the kitchen sink. Purdue’s OL is still hard to hide.
  • Purdue does stay run/pass balanced. They screen a ton.
  • Ed has Purdue up to 21% from 8%ish. Upset talk is coming from the trolls.
  • Red zone offense does not exist.
  • Worse games than Florida-Tennessee’s 4th quarter?
  • Air Force’s power option was effective, then it went away, then it came back and was effective—Michigan didn’t adjust to it.
  • AF had safeties at 7-8 yards all game: stuff you up until they give up a huge play.
  • Unlucky that Michigan couldn’t get touchdowns when they did.
  • Where was the max pro play-action deep ball?
  • How did Don Brown fly under the radar so long?
  • RBs missing their cuts—Ty Wheatley Sr. effect?
  • Devin Bush love: so effective as a blitzer. Michigan recruited him like a 5-star
  • Don’t hit Wilton Speight with a car.

We recorded this podcast once again at the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown. However this time Seth wasn’t there and so nobody noticed the recorder wasn’t plugged in. The good news is this hotel in the middle of downtown Ann Arbor is so quiet inside we could still salvage everything but Jamie’s part.

---------------------------------

1. Florida-Tennessee

starts at 1:00

All the defenses would have been better than Cover 2. S-E-C! Jim McElwain is a sauce-selling shark sexer. Seriously: any defense.

2. The Offense

starts at 8:59

Air Force went for broke, Michigan broke them and were a bit unfortunate they didn’t have two big touchdowns early. We’re really frustrated with throwing fades out of bounds. Might have underestimated the lost of the receiver corps. Lack of very interesting things. Good at cosmetic touchdowns.

3. The Defense

starts at 30:25

James Light broke down this entire game before it happened, until Don Brown brought out the counter to the counter. Eventually AF was trying to beat Khaleke Hudson in coverage, until Hudson finally caught one. Both CBs were great in run support. McCray nice bounce-back game. Winovich is more Brandon Graham than Jake Ryan.

4. Special Teams and Feelingsball

starts at 30:20

Special Teams: Quinn Nordin is already the best kicker in Michigan history, still hasn’t gotten Ace the Wild Thing haircut. DPJ should return everything. Will Hart has to not shank punts. James Foug taunting Air Force receivers by skying them to the 1 yard line. Feelingsball: Kill Red Hat! Brian’s boycotting Dr. Pepper. Two ad breaks a quarter. Types of cars that don’t advertise on college football. Sorry to see Sumlin’s getting fired.

---------------------------------

After UFR: The Offense

starts at 1:00

Okay fine let's talk about Wilton Speight. We are getting sick of talking about Speight. He only had four incompletes in the charting, but they were again bad incompletes of the kind that sail into bad things territory. The OL is beefy on the right side and still learning; love that Cole doesn’t chase bad blocks. Zentry! has some route chops.

After UFR: The Defense

starts at 27:29

Okay fine let's talk about Mike McCray. He doesn’t seem to zone much and was not getting depth—that’s weird out of a 5th year guy. The secondary only busted a couple of times and should have been saved by the DL. Hayden Moore made a perfect throw while under duress on one of these. Brandon Watson was getting straight-up tackled so Michigan went to zone. Kinnel’s heroic tackle was amazing, his one miss was not so necessary.

Hoops & Hockey Recruiting

starts at 50:45

Michigan will get an official visit from the top overall player in the country, RJ Barrett, but that’s not going to happen. Ignas Brazdeikis we feel good about. Beilein looking to take a just-a-shooter in this class. Missed a couple of elite wings so Iggy is a big deal. Hockey: Mel is recruiting at prime Red level. Is more good news on the way?

Air Force Preview

starts at 1:09:21

They will cut you and cut you and run run run run until the pass comes and it goes for long. Their main wingback Tim “Unfortunately Named” McVey and their quarterback are back and excellent; they turned over everybody else except the middle linebacker. Michigan hopefully won’t play with a single high safety again. Are they really gonna man up Donovan Peoples-Jones? This feels like a big game for Grant Perry.

Things discussed:

  • Piped in music:  Let the band play!
  • Speight: It’s a mental physical correctable mistake. Expect a rollercoaster ride again.
  • UFR, he wasn’t that bad. It’s too late; he’s John Navarre to the fanbase. He’s already better than John Navarre.
  • Ed isn’t going to question Harbaugh; is going to question Shaw
  • Is Michigan trying to get out of the home-and-home with Washington?
  • Harbaugh’s Moe Wagner disease: refs just don’t like overzealous puppies? This game was really bad—and lopsided bad—from a crew who’s usually alright.
  • Kinnel is pronounced Kinnel like Kinnel not Kinnel also his +3 tackle was a star safety’s play.
  • What about Air Force? Score more than 22.
  • What’s up with JT Barrett? His OL sucks. Craig says Ohio State is disqualified from the Final 4.

Chase Winovich is wearing Eric Upchurch’s hat. [Eric Upchurch]

We recorded this podcast from the Michigan Room of the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown. There are 13 rooms, one for every Big Ten team! Also it’s a new building owned and operated by Michigan (not Ohio State) people.

We Couldn’t Have One Without the Other

We can do this because people support us. You should support them too so they’ll want to do it again next year! The show is presented by UGP & Bo Store, and if it wasn’t for Rishi and Ryan we probably would be working for someone like McElwain instead of dragging him.

---------------------------------

1. Offense

starts at 1:00

We know about Speight. Need more Harbaugh Speight, less Borges. Ty Isaac in the open field is a linebacker-sized man running faster than defensive backs. Love seeing Mason Cole back at left tackle. Grant Perry is the star of the receivers.

2. Defense

starts at 21:45

Tunnel screens are still bad. McCray versus athletic RB in space still bad. Defense is not utterly perfect is still bad, a thing. The wheel route was McCray going under a crossing route—there were some huge offensive picks they missed but that wasn't one. Winovich doesn’t have a true backup. Introducing: The Don Brown Hat Trick. #Swatson had a great game.

3. Special Teams & Game Theory

starts at 44:36

Using a safety as a punt returner: Grant Perry was fine. Go for it on 4th and half a yard, man! Football gods won’t let you punt on 4th and 2 down two scores with six minutes left.

4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac

starts at 56:31

I think they meant that song to be “Oklahoma!” but nobody from MGoBlog was willing to get deep enough into a Rogers & Hammerstein play to get it right. EMU is still 0-58 against Power 5 teams after beating Rutgers, but this is good enough to get Brian to pronounce their names. Make JT Barrett beat you. Brian forces everyone to talk about Minnesota. Purdue is already TECMO BOWL.

After UFR: The Defense

starts at 1:00

So THAT’S how a 3-3-5 works. That play did not go well for Brandon Powell—Metellus can cover. Were we too positive about Devin Bush? About everybody? Were there any busts in the secondary? Is there literally anything to complain about?

After UFR: The Offense

starts at 18:00

Wilton was suboptimal but fine—you can tell why he’s starting over O’Korn. Nolan Ulizio got worked by the number one guy out of Wyoming. Important that the backs look good because you lost Ty Wheatley. Chris Evans for Michigan 2040!

Gimmicky Top Five: Places to Go on Gameday

starts at 37:54

How many 50-yard field goals per game would it take to get Ace to carve the Wild Thing into his hair? Come for the overpriced food, stay for the red hot beer takes.

Cincinnati Preview

starts at 53:31

It’s getting funky in here. So this is not a very good team. They have some good receivers and a decent defensive line. Their linebackers were decimated, the defensive backs bust spectacularly. What’s Alex Hornibrook with a less strong arm? They’ll dink ‘n dunk; Michigan should break some big plays. Kevin?

Things discussed:

  • Guys who picked 31-17 admit it was closer to 75-2 than 33-17. The offense moving the ball in particular was wonderful.
  • Don’t get too excited: Florida’s coaching is atrocious.
  • The 3-3-5 created holes for linebackers and confused Florida by not letting them know where the fourth DL is going to be (example: first play of the 4th Q).
  • Michigan’s personnel is really well-suited to this.
  • Amazing that the 3-3-5 plans never escaped the submarine.
  • Around the nation: Ohio State’s dudes are just guys, JK Dobbins just took Mike Weber’s job.
  • Purdue! Brohm is the most Tilleresque play they could have made and that’s what they should do. Craig thinks the season got harder.
  • Predictions for Cincy: 75-2.
  • “You can go to a Michigan football event and see up on a large screen an overweight naked man on top of a shark.”

MGoPodcast 9.1: And the Band Played Jaws

1 hour and 37 minutes

[original, less sharky photo by Chris Cook]

[UPDATE: As multiple people pointed out it was Florida’s band that played Jaws. Apparently this is a usual thing, we assume because their head coach…]

We recorded this podcast from the Michigan Room of the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown. Then the guys jetted before the staff brought out the evening (M-W-F) guest tray with wine and beer and some seriously amazing buffalo ranch chicken dip & chips by Chef Alisa.

Townies ignore this but I live out in the Detroit burbs and the best date night idea I’ve had yet was to book Friday night at Res Inn, leave the car in the structure next door, and go discovering all the things that weren’t there when I was. Like who moved Blimpy Burger right in the path of our walk stumble home?

---------------------------------

1. Offense

[starts at 1:00]

Bounce, bounce bounce actually works because Florida forgot to have edge protection. Long runs on 3rd and long, Kugler grading well, Speight and his Navarrish performance, Fades to Black, Best Possible Grant Perry, Michigan fans have Opinions on TE blocking.

2. Defense

[starts at 27:58]

3-3-5 for the win! The Casteel defense run correctly looks thusly. The defense looked excellent (11/53 plays were TFLs, QED). A wild Gil appears. Devin Bush man he will put his face in places. M’s “slow” DEs were Peppers’ing screens. Three interchangeable safeties makes it hard to motion them out of their fits.

3. Special Teams & Feelings Ball

[starts at 46:14]

Special Things: Quinn Nordin for Heisman campaign lasts three quarters, DPJ nearly broke two, Hudson was one of the kick returners and we are all about this new quasi-linebacker returner tradition, though this one is way more violent. Blocked punt contributed to aaaah part of the afternoon. Ambry shows up Brian Cook.

Feelings: Started iffy, turned bad for a moment, then went in the Harbaugh direction. Good job refraining on burning too many redshirts. Most who came in late were guys who are going to contribute extensively this year. Question Stueber but it’s a good schedule to develop a guy before PSU; he and St-Juste will either develop or develop hangnails. Florida reminds us of Hoke: The Sludgefart Years.

4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac

[starts at 1:02:20]

Wes Brown’s genius at Maryland is fun and Piggy—Vegas had them way underrated. Purdue barely loses to Louisville(!) in a ref jobbing. Illinois was a Malik and a Dudek away from losing to a MAC team. MSU was lucky not to fall to a worse MAC team while emptying out the drawer. Rutgers managed to play a quarter of football-like substance, then launched the dumb punt of the young season, and supplied a generation’s worth of Jersey article images with its hot tub. Minnesota’s OL is not helping its help-needing QBs. Iowa played an Iowa game. Indiana played an Indiana classic. J.K. Dobbins just Wally Pipp’d Mike Weber. Nebraska comes in late to fulfill conference’s Big Tennn! quota.
