Things discussed

  • Florida's same things are exactly the opposite: mitigated the pass pro problem, up and down season
  • McElwain leaves and Michigan's receiver recruiting ticks up
  • Who's playing? Gary's out. Bush might not but he's the heart of the defense. The corners don't have enough tape. Other guys weighing their options: Metellus, Hudson.
  • Stueber was alright vs OSU, the TEs were not
  • More Florida: they will blitz and get after you up front
  • Caller: Does Saban just enjoy tormenting Harbaugh? Addressing crootin cynicism
-Malik McDowell's mom was right about Michigan State
-Craig's theory: Tyrell Pryor strung Michigan along to make it harder for Rodriguez to sign a 2008 QB
-Aubrey Solomon: Committed to Michigan the day after the "FU" video
-Daxton Hill committed at the trough of the season. When the dust settles, Sam will lay out the timeline but he isn't going to make things more difficult for Michigan in an ongoing recruitment
  • Don Brown: $2 million. Pay the players. Big XII has interest in him of course. We're paying Pep Hamilton $1.45 million (highest-paid OC?)
  • Sam goes through Michigan's real time playcalling, which is weird and leads to fighting the clock
  • Developing the short game, and the Evans game
  • Promise next time will be basketball

The Hosts: MGoHockey Correspondent David Nasternak and Person of Great Hockey Substance Anthony Ciatti. .

This Podcast Has a Sponsor: Michigan Law Grad Jonathan Paul is the guy with the C you want skating next to the ref and pleading your case. He's also a good guy to sit next to at the hockey games.

1. Kissing Your Brother (and a Loss) and Your Twin Sister (and a Loss)

starts at 0:50

The team didn't play badly against Michigan State and Minnesota but came away with just about the worst possible result given their effort. Team is constructed well, can't do more without more scoring liners. The draft picks are all concentrated on the blue line (and include Boka). Minnesota is odd because they're sorely in need of talent on D and have freshman forwards to spare.

2. Global

starts at 37:43

GLI and World Juniors are coming. A preview of the Michigan/other Big Ten players involved, plus some Red Wings draft picks. Canada is stacked this year--17 first or second round picks on that team. The U.S. has built a regular contender but medaling is hard enough this year. Hughes will be either the first pairing or the second-best defenseman and on the 1A pairing.

--------------------------------------------

1. Northwestern

starts at 1:00

Most road building for a Northwestern game ever? Wildcats took NBA step-back threes and made them and still didn't crack a PPP. Iggy has broken out. First Austin Davis conversation: it wasn't all on him, but he was significantly non-Teske. Do fouls attract mtore fouls? Billy Donlon knew to play Xavier Simpson like Tum Tum. Extensive discussion on Chris Collins on all fours and Brian hates weird fun traditions. Seth admits to having thrown seafood at various hockey games.

2. South Carolina

starts at 25:09

A terrible offense cracked a point per possession! Revise opinion of the defense? Michigan just sloppy in the first half. Not *AS* good at two-point defense. You can't sag off Gravett and they did, and he made all three of his shots. The Austin Davis conversation. Michigan not as focused in this game but it never felt like they'd lose.

3. Peach Bowl Preview

starts at 55:54

Florida alternated good and bad games. Hard to gauge SEC teams because the conference has a bad bottom half and the SECiesta. Still the same guys plus two transfer receivers. Seth compares Feleipe Franks to what you'd see if John Navarre was coached by Rich Rodriguez, which is unfair to everyone. They're good at pass rush mitigation, not pass pro. Concerned more about the three speedy slot receivers than the starters. Florida has ironic names: Polite is very rude to quarterbacks, Moral is a bad dude. So bored with Florida.

4. Hockey Things

Starts at 1:16:14

Are we mad at the goaltending or not? Defense has weird breakdowns. Mostly they're missing an entire top line.

WTKA Roundtable 12/6/2018: Do You Know What a DVD Is? Comment Count

Seth December 7th, 2018 at 7:41 AM

Things discussed:

  • Shutting down Carsen Edwards was a team effort
  • Surprised Haarms hasn't progressed more.
  • Northwestern hit a lot of weird shots, good defensive team.
  • Poole and Brazdeikis are their best isolation players but that's not their offense
  • Brian not so hard on Austin Davis—blamed the refs.
  • The 14-2 run with Teske on the bench with foul trouble was too stark
  • Could use less Matthews usage but that's not gonna change
  • Post-Michigan coaching comments
  • Defensive strategy leads to fewer fouls: not a lot of help/reach-ins
  • The Big Ten is deep, some poor bubble team is going 8-12 in this league.

1. North Carolina

starts at 1:00

People are there for a 9:30 p.m. tip on a Wednesday and Crisler has been *loud*. Lotta Carolina fans got to witness their team's defenestration too. Is Michigan a blue blood? When Poole is your "weak point" your defense isn't vulnerable. Teske five blocks vs one of the most athletic teams in the country. CM's fall-away from 10 feet is not our favorite shot but it's valuable as a late clock idea. Iggy segment starts at 16 minutes.

2. Purdue

starts at 29:52

Boilers' schedule is brutal to start. Teske vs. Painter: if he's going to hit threes from the top of the key Painter's got nothing left. Carsen Edwards had 50% usage. Poole is now on fire. Prevented a three-centric team from shooting them.

3. Hoops Season Outlook

starts at 52:36

Is this a Top Seed? Normally a Beilein team is operating like this in February. Big Ten is manageable, probably already played the highest ranked opponents on the schedule. Have a trip to Breslin in their future. Free throw shooting: if Matthews can stay at 70. Big Ten is good this year though.

4. Not Hockey

Starts at 1:14:50

Why can't we get these games on TV? What has Warde done? This would be a good thing to do. State plays with six goalies on the ice at a time. Gotta make some Grade A stops because nobody can live at .830. Gonna be an off year or two while we wait for Mel's guys to grow up.

WTKA Roundtable 11/29/2018: What Are We Doing Here? Comment Count

Seth November 30th, 2018 at 10:14 AM

I broke it up by times so you could skip past the bad thing if you don't want to talk about the bad thing.

Things discussed:

1. Disaster in Columbus (at 1:00)

  • Ed rips on Don Brown for the South Carolina game
  • 2016 and 2017 Michigan vastly out-schemed Ohio State, so it's not an overall pattern.
  • The problem is Michigan had the #1 defense so couldn't anticipate their flaws. At halftime, fine, you can't get to the quarterback and can't live with Watson anymore. Change it up!
  • OSU probably going back to being a Tate Martell offense next year
  • Catch three balls.
  • Bowl destination?

2. Glory in Crisler (at 19:51)

  • Too soon to talk Monday Night
  • Why was Michigan State the consensus pick for the B1G? This year's is a better team than last year's.
  • Craig: Teske was the player of the game: UNC didn't want anything to do with under the basket. Brian: No it's CM. Sam: No it's Iggy. Wait we all forgot Livers
  • Turned it into a halfcourt game.
  • Versus last Novembers
  • Purdue preview

1. Stealing one from ND and the Penn State Comebacks

starts at 0:50

The Penn State series was a shootout that Michigan fought back in both third periods from dead. Defense was shaky but offense coming around. A good, old-fashioned shootout that split the series in a tough place to win against a good team. The first two weekends included three great 3rd period performances.

2. The Badger Hole and Hockeytakes

starts at 19:20

The Wisconsin series featured two ties and zero sister kisses, two 3v3 overtimes, and a very defensive posture from Michigan. Dominant in possession but meager on the scoreboard, the team played a very structured game designed to limit chances against, and they were mostly successful in that department. Bounces did not go their way hence the two ties. Anthony helps Dave settle a twitter disagreement about Friday's goal against.

Also the team is examined.  Discussions about the lineup and the goalie situation. Anthony praises Mel's system and coaching to date. Talk about the extra skater.

2. The Defense

3. So, Basketball

starts at 27:32

Wow this part actually made us feel good for a moment. Livers allows Michigan to play five out and unlock their switching skills, reminds us a little of Roby. If you don't want that Michigan you have to play Teske. Eli Brooks: Surprise Microwave.

4. How to Pronounce Zebra

Starts at 47:39

Northern or "Winners" grits starts with regular grits but I mix in garlic and cheese. Then I add a sunny side up egg, mushrooms, grilled onions, and feta cheese. Got it from The Bomber in Ypsi. David cooks eggs a bad way.

--------------------------------------------

1. IU AFTER UFR

starts at 1:00

Seth plays the panic.gif guy, badly. The first Ramsey run was probably a poorly executed play where Dwumfour missed the stunt. Paye was spied on one play and got a late jump on the play. Kinnel got tempoed on a slot fade. Indiana used a mesh concept to lose Watson on a legal pick. Indiana is a similar rushing attack to Ohio State and Michigan will probably have to use a 5th linebacker against the Buckeyes. Michigan’s DT’s are just guys. The Hoosiers had a good game plan to take out Michigan’s 4 man pass rush. Michigan went conservative on offense late and it was the right thing to do. Andrew Stueber had his first real moment and he looked pretty good.

2. OSU Preview

starts at 26:15

Brian thinks Ohio State is bad and is terrified. Seth thinks Ohio State is bad, entitled, and more terrified. The Buckeyes are no longer an automatic third and short team without JT. Mesh is OSU’s base play. Haskins can run but he’s not very athletic and avoids contact even though he’s big. JK Dobbins isn’t as effective as he was last year. Haskins is not comfortable if you pressure him at all. Michigan will want to isolate Gary/Uche/Winovich against Isaiah Prince, who struggled against Carter Coughlin and Kenny Wilekes of Minnesota and MSU. OSU is a YAC team. Brian has a theory about OSU’s defense, which is very poorly coached. Their defensive line is still pretty good but without Bosa, it’s not as devastating as it could be. Jonathan Cooper is just a guy while Chase Young is going to be a star. Landers and Jones are good in the interior.

3. The Bacon Off the Rails Podcast

starts at 46:16

Bacon believes that it’s Michigan’s year. Seth shouldn’t be a college football program and we invent the Seth Rule. Bacon starts spreading Brian Kelly rumors and the guys debate all different kinds of head coaching rumors.

4. Gimmicky Top Five Worst Takes of the Offseason wsg Nick Hopwood

starts at 1:14:05

The rule is that for Seth and Brian, they have to pick at least 2 that are their own. Nick is a sponsor so he doesn’t have to stick to his takes, so he sticks to ours.

MUSIC:

This week we feature a band I saw once in 2002 and bought their album, EchoBrain. I don’t know anything else about them but they played with the Starlight Mints and Polyphonic Spree that one time and sounded like the Stones but their album isn’t like the Stones at all, but the intros sound good.
